  1. Well then seek out the Goodman on HEP, it won't duplicate much (if any) of the material. And the Christian box has excellent Goodman small group and big band material.
  2. OK, we just have different opinions on CD's then. I love them, always have, saw them as a huge step up from what was available on the market previously (LP's and especially tapes). I remember groaning at how easily LP's would get scratched, or warped, or the jackets would split. Wasted so many hours in second hand stores, looking at LP's in substandard shape. The ability to so easily go from point to point on CD's was great, the sound quality of one done right was such a pleasure. I don't disagree about cds. I just think it's a coincidence that you were driven for your reasons to change over to cd. . . you would have been driven by the companies otherwise (I was, I wasn't really wanting to become a cd collector but so much stuff came out on cd that I wanted!) Ironically, downloads don't get scratched at all, and when done right they sound great.
  3. He heh. It's no crime to want to seek out Goodman sides! There is a HEP cd that has Wardell and Benny, I bet more than is in the Proper box. (I'm not familiar with the contents of the Proper, those things give me the willies.) If you want some PRIME Goodman, get the Charlie Christian Columbia box!
  4. But, Lon, acknowledge the point I was making, this is a change being pushed by the companies for their profits, not pulled by consumer desire to change to a better format, the way CD's were (at least for many of us). Concord (and the whole industry) was dishonest in trying to indicate that the switchover to digital is due to "customer demand". That's my point. Uh do you really believe that the changeover to cd was CUSTOMER DRIVEN? I sure don't. Maybe in a very limited sense customers were going along with it, but I see no real "customer drive" to the changeover. In the sense that I might see some, there is the same happening with younger cats going for downloads for their reasons (obviously not for the reasons we might want to keep to cds, but for convenience, portability etc.) We're always subject to the companies drive for profits. And as JAZZ customers we really don't count in any significant way.
  5. I understand. . . . I'll be doing what I am now: listening to cds and listening to cdrs of downloaded material.
  6. Here's what my crystal ball shows: The industry is going to shift to downloads off the net and even in stores and charge just about as much, and we're not going to have a choice, we're going to either have our heads in the sand (or elsewhere) or participate in this new format change just as we did from analog to cds.
  7. You know, it's pretty easy to turn many of them into something solid and circular in your hands to pop into your player. (I admit that I have trouble with and have not learned to burn some forms).
  8. Some adult jazz fans buy only cds. Some download as well, and not just for iPods. Nothing is that absolute.
  9. Went to see Grindhouse today. Totally a blast just for the enthusiasm for the material that the directors and actors communicate. Very interesting to see the Austin area presented; three eateries I know well are filmed lengthily (one less than a mile from my house, another less than a mile from my workplace). My one gripe: the Austin characters, the girls out on a night on the town, didn't at all seem like Austinites to me. Not a one. But. . . boy is Ms Poitier charismatic!
  10. Wow. . . so hard to pick favorites. . . I think I'm inclined to agree with Shawn.
  11. Armstrong, Miles and Monk? I'll be getting those three! Good news!
  12. I have found that I like Sony's though some burners don't want to burn some blanks. If my standalone Alera Technologies burner won't accept the Sony, my iBook burner will, so I just set them aside if I run into one with a problem. Imation have done very well for me. TYs yes, great stuff in all their incarnations. I just find it easier to stop off at Walgreen's on the way home and buy a spindle of what's on sale. I have had longevity issues with Kodaks. Others have had longevity issues with a cheap brand of audio blanks I bought from www.am-dig.com some years ago, but I actually haven't.
  13. Yes, Elevation. And Village of the Pharoahs was a fairly recent addtion to the Verve Vault (sore spot for some).
  14. The Shepp was pretty useless, though, since the major cuts were available as bonus cuts on 'The Way Ahead' CD. Better if it would have been 'Things Have Got to Change' (impossible to find on CD now), or at least 'For Losers' or 'The Magic of Ju-Ju' (both pricey imports, which I did shell out for). The couple of short stray tracks from Kwanza could have been placed as bonus cuts on these. Well, that's your personal opinon. I had the tracks on The Way Ahead, and a vinyl copy that was worn, and I wanted the whole session together as a cd and I'm glad to have it. For me it works as a single entity quite wall. And I feel the sound on this is better than earlier digipak Impulses.
  15. These days my favorite brand is the one on sale at Walgreens!
  16. Jim, listening to the Right Time remix for about the eight time right now. This one really does deliver. My favorite of the remixes! Also, there's a sprout of a new Monday thread over at AAJ.
  17. Well a Pharoah and Shepp came out recently, via the Verve LP by Request (sort of) series. They sound great.

  20. Yup. I've taken up drinking along with all the other unhappy people.
  21. VERY few duds on this label. I really enjoy most of the historical releases. Check out almost any by Pete Jolly . . . . The Stan Levey is great.
  22. Well Dan, I wish you had been right. . . we still have Phil.
  23. I sit corrected then.
  24. John, I don't think that is true, their shipping page mentions checking to see a dropdown list of countries. . . .
  25. Darn it. More money to spend.
