Am I missing the what did Santy Claus bring you thread???
jazzbo replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My grandmother used to send me money when I was in college in Chicago. Each of us needed the money, I kept sending the checks back to her, and I meant well but I think I angered her. She meant me to have the money! I didn't mean to anger her. I understand now looking back because I think I'm a lot like her tempermentally and intellectually. I really miss her! You're doing the right thing. . . . -
Sorry "J". . . I thought that was Jimmy for some reason. . . my brain misfiring. Brian is not a misfire. Though he'd rather go by Clementine for some reason.
-
Brian I'm not being defensive. But you have the habit of coming across as the most arrogant "fuck everyone who doesn't agree with me" attitude and I'm just padding the armor in advance for this BS. Obviously you have a lot of fun slinging insults, but I don't want to receive them. I've ignored more posts of yours than answered for just such reasons. Respecting elders goes both ways. (And if that crack wasn't more than just your usual bs: Are you really that aging a hipster doofus? OVER 51?) Jimmy, I've heard thin and harsh MP3s and thin and harsh cds. . . neither had to be that way!
-
Hey, sure I'll take the best I can get but the MP3 I do have I can listen to and enjoy. And at eMusic prices, and for free for audience Dead downloads etc. it's fast and easy and you can be on the move. I have found the more dollars I've thrown at my stereo (and I've thrown too many) the better everything sounds. . . . My system is very flexible now and I can make SACDs and MP3s sound musical and just. . . enjoy. Enjoying music is what makes me go through the daily grind, and the recent hells. And I can enjoy MP3 Brian.

Some nice cds you got! -
Surprise, I'm going to disagree with Big Burg Berg a bit. Well. . . I used to wrinkle my nose at and toss in the hamper MP3. . . .But I find that I don't hear as much a difference as I intellectually thought I would between quality MP3 and many cds. I also don't hear that much difference in many cases between FLAC and MP3. Apple's AC files that Verve offers sound perfectly fine to me on my best system. I'm no longer a snob. I've tossed my former arrogance towards compressed files out the window. "It's about the music" I tell myself and enjoy the aforementioned. Nothing digital sounds as good as analog. That's just the way it is.

I got a new wedding band from my wife, not expensive but nice, I had outgrown my first one. My dad sent me a big check, and my father in law an even BIGGER check, but I have to bank those. This last year was the most expensive year I've ever had due to health and travel expenses, and my wife's income is seriously diminished. . . I need that money in the bank! A friend gave me the Armstrong All Stars dvd in the Jazz Icons series, and I'm really enjoying it! For myself I bought the Ellington Mosaic that was released this month. . . it's awesome. -
Yes, the Verve Vault offers out of print cds, and Impulse and Verve etc. downloads of cds formerly available in Japan. (It's a great deal. . .10 bucks or less for a clone of a cd that was 25 dollars or so when available at US retail stores!) Yes, I download MP3s all the time MG and burn them onto an audio cd. iTunes lets me choose to burn an audio or an MP3 cd. . . .

What Holiday Music Are You Spinninng Now
jazzbo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Today: Louis Armstrong "Christmas through the Years" "An Uptown Christmas" "Crescent City Christmas Card" Wynton Marsalis/LCJO a collection of Christmas songs performed by three friends of mine on piano, synth bass and drums, recorded in 1989 (I transferred it to cdr for them last Christmas) -
I pretty much agree with you, though I find I enjoy Cannon's output to the end, because. . . damn the motherfucker could play. He got better and better in my opinon. I much prefer Lateef to Lloyd anyday anywhere. Lateef brought so much to the Sextet just as he brings so much to anywhere he goes. That cat is DEEP.

That's a good one. Right now, "Bossa Nova USA" (Brubeck). Yesterday I set up the B&O combo reciever and turntable I inherited from my wife's aunt a while back in a separate room.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
jazzbo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't hear these the same as the Dinah set. Much hipper chorus here in my opinion. It didn't float my boat the first times I heard it, but I've come to really dig them. -

Happy Solstice Festival to all! -
Haven't heard this "Prestidigitator" but I'm sure it's a great one. Was just spinning two Savoy cds I have of Wallington and enjoying the heck out of them.
-
I love the alternate "Country" on the box set.

oops , this one of the few CA releases I loath, boring and dull, give me Clark Terry any day.......no seriously this is not one of Julian's better releases, those were all long time behind him in 1962. Live in San Francisco at the Jazz workshop- now that's a different story.................. I fully agree with your assessment. Well, I disagree obviously. I think 1961 was the beginning of really good stuff for CA. Different strokes for different folks. This is a darned good one in my opinion. Lateef!

Glad you joined too MG. Happy Holidays to everyone! May the next year be a great one! -
Wow! I now Greek too! And I thought I gave up after Latin! http://www.pirecordings.com/

If you don't pin the head of the family by May, the pole is put to another use. . . .

One of the best releases of 1962.

I find the lack of attention to this thread very disappointing.
-
Yes, those are both good ones. I keep spinning this new compilation, I think Concord did an excellent job. They made me hear this with excitment all over again.

Charles Tolliver Big Band - "With Love" (due Jan. 16th)
jazzbo replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
That was my first reaction as well. Is Mosaic entering the recording/production business? yes. The liner notes to the Tolliver Mosaic Select had indicated that it was the beginning of several joint projects between Mosaic and Strata-East. So I guess maybe Tolliver's contract is with Mosaic, reverse=leased to Blue Note, or whatever. Thanks for mentioning the notes in the Tolliver Select. I haven't bought that one yet. I bristle because I have all but the unreleased material on lp and on cd and I don't want to have to buy it . . .again! -
