  1. Considering how many sessions he was on or leader of, and considering how much of it got released, Miles Davis. I know he composed a good few classics but there are so many albums where it's all standards or the writing of his band members.
  2. I saw that a Complete Buddy De Franco/Sonny Clark-MOSAIC 4CD Set went fo nearly $360 including shipping, $90 a disc, ouch. :o
  3. If I remember correctly, when Senor Goldberg was around, this was one of his favorites and he used to talk it up fairly regularly.
  4. Yes, it's very good news if you're a Liverpoolf fan, I'm not so thrilled about the news that they might sign Tevez though, he's good and all that, just not what they need at the moment. But I am thrilled that Ronaldo might not get his way after all as Madrid might not want him in the end. Ronaldo's Real dream shattered as weary Madrid move for Bayern Munich's Ribery
  5. Finals never really are the greatest games, but if you didn't sit in awe of the way Barça hold on to the ball you probably will never like football. It was a lesson in the importence of possession, if you have the ball there is very little chance of the opposition doing you any damage and if you don't give it away easily there's even less chance again. United were exposed big time, they are not nearly as good as they were last year, all this "best United team ever" thing is bullshit. Of course Barça was brilliant in terms of passing the ball, although they lacked a bit in the finishing touch department, but in terms of greatness we saw finals deliver a bit more, to have a great final imo we need some drama for that we need two teams being able to able to hurt the opponent or play at the same level. This year except for the first minutes MU was out of contention. Last year final was a fine example of a dramatic game, best example of a great final is of couse the extraordinary Liverpool-Alaves UEFA cup final that took place some years ago I think this is why North Americans will never really "get" soccer, it's not supposed to be like a Basketball or Hockey game where 2 teams are in a race to see who can score the most, some of the most interesting/entertaining matches I have watched over the years have ended up 0-0. As long as it was only 1-0 last night, United had a chance, Barça were playing the best defence in Europe in that Final, Man U hadn't lost a game in Europe for I think 2 years. Barça didn't even have their first choice defence. United had all their squad available and just couldn't live with Messi, Xavi and Iniesta and when you see them in the Premiership every weak play badly and still beat teams, seeing them get spanked last night was really interesting.
  6. I know this one here gives his arranging credits on the Sal Salvador sessions; if you're still looking for them let me know.
  7. I know somebody was looking for the K2 of Monk's Music recently, I think they posted in the Recommendations area.
  8. Sorry, but it was a really great game, if you found that plodding, well at least you're honest about your observations.

  10. Cliff, I think Marc Myers over at Jazzwax is of the same mind as you on this one. That is wild, thanks for that ghost, I think he sums up his feelings about the album better than I do though. However, he seems to change his tune at the end; "in all, the Complete Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Recordings is a highly worthwhile set for fans of the Bennett-Evans collaboration—even if you've never cared for the original recordings or you already own them. It's an important entry because it fully documents what has been up until now a highly puzzling session. What's more, you finally get to hear the alternate takes. They demonstrate just how good this pairing could have been with the right producer in the booth. To paraphrase Evans, it's on these tracks where truth met beauty." Which makes me think I should check this out again but on the other hand, it must be rare/weird for a session's alternate takes to get a better reveiw than what was released.
  11. Wow. My reaction couldn't possibly have been more different. I LOVE that album. My favorite cut is "When In Rome." Yea don't know what it was, maybe I was just used to hearing Bennett with more "padding" around him, he seemed to be over doing it a bit. I liked the lyrics to "When In Rome" though.
  12. It is, point 4 was very good, they forgot to mention that you will eventually need some deep pockets.
  13. Oddly enough I was just listening to their first album for the first time last night. I really didn't like it, not really enough variety and everything seemed a bit over the top emotion wise, IMHO of course.
  14. In a way I envy you, the Bone-meister has been a favorite of mine for years but I would love to have the thrill of discovering him for the first time again. Hs is soooooooooooo good.
  15. I'm sure this post will get deleted like most of the rest of them have been in this thread, but anyway, he never does what he says he's going to do, does he?
  16. Yes we can, I just like to get the last word in.
  17. Then you really shouldn't post anything in the thread, unless it's recommendations for Stan Getz recordings. If you're not willing to say anything on why you think it's sad for the board the thread is gone, why post that you think it's sad for the board that the thread is gone in the first place??? If the person who started the thread has no problem with it being deleted and the owner of the forum saw it as correct to delete it, then the matter is closed. Now back to discussing the many recordings of Stan Getz that some of us have or may wish to get. One reason I didn't say more. . . .Maybe I was being polite and didn't want to say something bad about you. You were rubbing your hands with glee that you felt Allen was chided by Bev. I didn't like your attitude. I haven't liked the way you provoke Allen. I'd like to think you can find a better use for your time than worrying about what people say about Allen, he's a big boy and he can look after himself. Jim, sorry for causing you any trouble with my fake retirement post and other than the fact that it took me a while to type it, I have no problem with you deleting it. I know I PM'd you recently regarding behaviour on the board and I don't want you to think that I was doing that just to test the waters, the two incidents were separate and the timing was coincidental. It was meant as genuine satire and I though it was quite funny. I know of at least two other members who found it funny as well, I’m sure there were more they just didn’t PM me. To anybody who didn't get to read it, I still have the text and can PM it to you and you can make up your own minds. A few people didn't like it; I could have predicted who they were before I posted it, the kind of babies that go on about the whole freedom of speech thing until they read something they don't like. No biggie, as I say it was a joke and anyone who has been on the board for a while and has a sense of humour probably enjoyed it.
  18. Not a who but a what, the ECM label, dipping my toe into a few bits and pieces.
  19. Somebody just needs to make an announcement.

  21. Possibly because of this; No topics were found. This is either because there are no topics in this forum, or the topics are older than the current age cut-off.
  22. Well, I know this is probably a bootleg, but curiosity killed me. I bought it recently and here's my observation: 0. Sonically speaking, the 1975 Lincoln Center tape sounds so-so. I guess the tape speed is slightly too fast -- the voice pitch of the announcer sounds too high for me, but since I don't have the absolute pitch, don't believe me too much. The 1972 Village Vanguard tape must be an audience recording, so don't expect hi-fi sound. But I think it's acceptable, anyway. 1. Monk plays surprisingly well - much more energetic and inspired than the late 60s. He comps steadily behind Jeffery(which became kinda rare when he was with Rouse in the late 60s), and takes good solos by himself. Not ground-breaking, but still very good. 2. Monk Jr. plays surprisingly well, too - not flashy, but quite swingy and seems to inspire his dad(especially on the 1972 tape). 3. Paul Jeffery is smoking - I didn't know he was such a good player. Much more aggressive and inpsired than Rouse in the late 60s with Monk. 4. The biggest surprise for me is the presence of Dave Holland on the 1972 tape -- his walking bass line really swings. Holland might have been the best bass player Monk could ever get. So, I should say this is not essential but an important recording, and it's worth releasing it under more appropriate circumstance (e.g. from Thelonious Records, possibly?) Yes, we've all let curiosity get the better of us in these types of things so you're not alone there. Thanks for the review, I'm even more curious now.
  23. Well said, an excellent point expressed perfectly.
  24. Yea me too, but when I see it, I'll buy it.
  25. I accept that wager. I don't actually accept that wager, I just really like the word wager. Wager.
