  1. After ALL these years, hard to believe it's finally going OOP!
  2. Seeing them at SFJAZZ on Jan 20.
  3. Better HURRY! Tidal may only have enough cash left to last six months
  4. I tend to agree with you, but it's pervasive across ALL social media. I've never bothered to bring it up and learned to accept the irony of it all.
  5. Seeing this group at SFJAZZ next month. Looking forward to it. Here's the announced lineup: Vijay Iyer piano, Fender Rhodes Graham Haynes, cornet Steve Lehman, alto saxophone Mark Shim, tenor saxophone Stephan Crump, bass Marcus Gilmore, drums

I was actually at the show (UCLA, Pauley Pavilion) where they recorded "Another Band from LA." Can't say that I remember it very well, and we didn't have very good seats, either. But at least I can say, "I was there!"

Roxy & Elsewhere is one of my fav FZ albums, so I guess this will be a must-have!
  8. I'm in!
  9. McLaughlin was great last night. I haven't seen him in about 40 years(!), but it doesn't sound like he's lost a step. Just as dynamic and exciting as he was back then. He looks great and had a lot of energy. His quartet is amazing, too. I wasn't familiar with a lot of the pieces they played, but it didn't matter as I was enjoy his performance so much. Jimmy Herring, who's touring with him, was a bit of a disappointment. His opening set seemed very 'pedestrian' to me. He's obviously a master guitar player and his band was competent enough. There just seemed to be a lack of energy on stage and I didn't find his guitar playing interesting, in spite of the pyrotechnics. They all stepped it up a notch for the final set with both bands playing together, though.
  10. I actually never heard "Music From The Source." Maybe I will ... someday! I have Compassion on vinyl, but don't have my audio system set up for records right now.
  11. OK - thanks for the heads up. I'll have them with me, just in case.
  12. I got so lucky because I had gone to New York to play with Tony [Williams] and Larry [Young], and I met Miles the day I arrived. I saw him again the next day and he said, “Come to the studio,” and that was the In a Silent Way recording. The title track is a Joe Zawinul tune and it’s a beautiful piece, only Miles didn’t like the way Joe set it up. So he said to me, “You play it. Everyone will stop and you play it.” Well, I had Joe’s part but there was no guitar part. So I said, “Listen, this is a piano part. Do you want the chords and the melody?” I was sweating so hard my clothes were soaked. That’s when he said, “Play it like you don’t know how to play the guitar.” Read more: https://www.relix.com/articles/detail/john_mclaughlin_on_miles_davis_mahavishnu_and_more#ixzz50YbwafFB
  13. Don't think Cecil McBee's "Compassion" ever made it to CD. It's live at Sweet Basil on Enja, with Chico Freeman, Joe Gardner, Dennis Moorman, Steve McCall and Don Moye
  14. I'm seeing the McLaughlin/Herring show on Friday. Should be a blast (literally). I'll be sure to bring hearing protection.
  15. Clifford Jordan: "Glass Bead Games" disk
  16. At least they recorded a fair amount!
  17. Yeah, they were something! Obviously I wish I had seen the classic 60s editions with Wayne and Lee or Freddie, but I was too young to appreciate jazz at that time. **EDIT: can't seem to get the KK Blakey poster to post.
  18. Thanks, guys! Had a very low-key, but nice day today.
  19. I saw him at least 5 times, four of those at the Keystone Korner. Pretty sure the first 3 (1977, 78, 79) were with Valeri Ponomarev, Bobby Watson, David Schnitter, James Williams and Dennis Irwin. A very underrated edition of the band, IMO. 12/30/79 I saw this show: 1/13/1982 with this lineup: Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Bill Pierce, Donald Brown, Charles Fambrough
  20. I had no idea that the physical versions of that album were so high-priced. I have both the 2-LP and 3-CD sets, so I'm covered.
  21. Congrats, GA - you deserve it!!! But very generous of you to pass on your winnings.
