What live music are you going to see tonight?
BFrank replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
There's an interesting festival that's been happening in Knoxville, TN called the Big Ears Festival. It's not a "Jazz Festival" per se, but blends several different genres. This year they had such diverse acts as Wilco, Carla Bley and Henry Threadgill. I'm already planning for next year's dates in March. -
Looks like Cuscuna is unloading some stock on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/usr/bluenotesound

Clifford Jordan-Strata East Mosaic

Besides being music that will probably be hard to find, the clips sounded really good to me! -
Will there be a "bundle" offer for the CDs and T-shirt?

I already have a ticket for the SFJAZZ show. It's a very small venue, too ... should be great!

I didn't see much of anything worth buying.

Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!

Me FOUR! The notice said: "Please note that we are behind in shipping and we expect to ship your order in about 7 days." -
I saw them a couple of years ago for the first time. Really enjoyed it. Even though they played a couple of the "hits", it didn't seem like an oldies act to me.

Agreed about "The Free Slave" with the all-star cast of Woody Shaw, George Coleman, Hugh Lawson and Cecil McBee! Not to mention a smokin' version of Cecil's "Will Pan's Walk".

I was seeing if I could find any current info on Cuscuna and stumbled on this interesting 5 1/2 minute monologue by him about his approach to reissues. Check it out. -

I think the discussion here was that "old people" are the only ones going to see jazz. I'm not saying that younger fans are going to see the older musicians. I don't see them at those shows, either. But I think there IS a new generation of jazz or jazz-influenced artists out there who are appealing to younger audiences. -
Good to see this thread again. If anyone's interested, both Compost albums are available for streaming on Amazon Music.

I think there's a new interest in jazz as personified by Kamasi Washington and groups like Snarky Puppy and their offshoots. I've been to shows by both that were packed ... with a large percentage of enthusiastic "young people." -

To flesh out my thought, I was thinking about their attention to detail (packaging, liner notes, remastering) for finding and issuing historic recordings appeals to the same audience that Mosaic appeals to. -

It's been interesting watching Resonance releases the past couple of years. They're definitely following some of the Mosaic model but with smaller, more focused and affordable sets. -
eMusic again: "Echo Echo Mirror House" Anthony Braxton, $0.49 "Insomnia" Tim Berne, $0.49 (yes, forty-nine cents!)

Wow - good catch! I didn't even know this existed. Those MPS albums are by far my favorite GD albums.

Very sad, for sure! I met her brother, Mount, a few years ago. He's the Dir of Operations at SFJAZZ and a very nice man.

I think they're still weekly, although the schedule seems to be erratic lately. I'm sure the staff is pre-occupied with "other things" right now. -

In today's Mosaic Newsletter: "The internet has changed our world for better and for worse. In 2016, Mosaic Records had to abandon its brochures, once our only pipeline to the jazz world, because the production and postal costs no longer justified the catalog in this world of email, websites and electronic payments. We put a lot of thought and love into the writing, photography and design of those brochures. We've decided to unlock our stash of previous brochures and make them available to our customers. Quantities vary drastically but each one is priced at $10 while they last. We are beginning with brochure nos. 7 to 35. More issues will be made available periodically. For a complete listing of what's available please click image above." -

Anyone notice that Mosaic is now selling old brochures? There are 3 of them for sale on the "Last Chance" list for $10 each. They must REALLY need cash. -
That IS interesting!

Last night saw Donny McCaslin Quartet and Antonio Sanchez Migration. Sanchez group was competent, but I didn't find the music very inspiring. Part of the problem was that he performed one extended piece for about an HOUR. Not sure what the point was, as it meandered and the 'passages' never seemed to add up to a common 'whole'. It easily could have been multiple pieces that were more focused. McCaslin's band was a breath of fresh air after that. He has an endearing personality and each member of the quartet were allowed to show off their skills and unique personalities. Mark Giuliana (d) was amazing! -
For those of you who still use eMusic - they have it.

Saw Hudson tonight at SFJAZZ. A 'super group' of musicians who live in the Hudson Valley of NY: Jack DeJohnette, Larry Grenadier, John Medeski, John Scofield. I think this was their first show. Definitely a loose conglomeration more focused on 'jamming' than tight arrangements and particularly focused on Sco (I don't think he can help himself ). Aside from a few originals, they cover 'popular' songs from the 60s-70s - tonight playing 2 Hendrix tunes, "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "Spanish Castle Magic, Dylan's "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", Joni's "Woodstock", the Band's "Up on Cripple Creek" among others. Jack even provides a few vocals here and there! Usually, I have problems with jazz covers like this but they deconstruct these tunes to such an extent that they're barely recognizable. Anyway, a good show worth seeing if they come your way. The album drops tomorrow (June 9).
