  1. Sad day indeed. Sorry I never saw him perform.
  2. Another HUGE thumbs up [ :tup ] for the Tolliver set. This stuff is SO good! I was a little underwhelmed by Onzy, actually. I gave it a few listens expecting to have that Gerald Wilson-like energy, and it just didn't hold up for me throughout. There were some nice moments, but ultimately I ended up trading it.
  3. Just back from Wayne. Great show - 3 pieces: first was an hour, second was about 20 minutes, encore was 10. The communication in this band is amazing and of course they're all masters of their instruments. Very enthusiastic crowd - you could tell that the band was feeding off them. (except for one a-hole, who periodically yelled for WR tunes. don't know why he wasn't bounced)
  4. The Jayhawks were pretty good. I realize that I don't love all of their tunes, but the ones I like.........I liked last night. Louris is an interesting electric guitar player for this style of music. Lots of distortion and he plays a Gibson SG, which I wouldn't usually associate with country-flavored rock. Tomorrow night: Wayne Shorter
  5. Going to see the newly reconstituted Jayhawks tonight. I expect a quality show.
  6. Thanks! Just grabbed the new $5.99 Wilco for $3.99.
  7. I'm still waiting for someone to discover the long-lost Miles/Jimi jams that no one knows about.
  8. Watched the Germany video tonight. Very nice to have this stuff.
  9. This is funny.
  10. Picked it up today. The packaging IS pretty cheesy, but I'm sure the music will make up for that shortcoming.
  11. Just listened to most of disk 2....................<<<WHOA!>>>
  12. Cool!
  13. Agree about Mills - I met him and Ken Stringfellow when Ken was a sideman. Both cool guys. Really? Stringfellow was a sideman, too? I'm a big Posies fan. Talked to him a little last time they were in town.
  14. They do seem to be very straight forward guys. I've met Mills and Scott McCaughey (the '5th REM') - very approachable.
  15. Arrived today.........just in time for the weekend!
  16. Glad I'm not the only one who really likes "New Adventures in Hi-Fi". It's an album that doesn't grow old for me and I always hear something new in it. I usually see it referred to as "commercially disappointing" - which for me is a GOOD thing!
  17. Regardless of their spotty album output, I've never seen them put on a bad concert performance. Saw them 4 times in the 80's, lost track of them in the 90s, saw them on top of their game in '08 at SXSW at the relatively small Stubb's venue (and again in Berkeley later that year). Probably just as well they hang it up (at least for a while) as they seem to be trying too hard to make a relevant album. SXSW 2008
  18. I remember getting some of Miles' metal spine boxes for VERY reasonable pre-release prices that I never saw again afterwards. I don't know about that, but I DO know that it's one of their worst albums.
  19. Jon Langford does a lot of his (and others) covers
  20. $15 is pretty good.........but I still want the box.
  21. As an aside, DeepDiscount.com currently has that disc and the other three live Airplane releases by Collectors' Choice Music for ridiculously low prices - between $2-3 per disc. Just search for "Jefferson Airplane" and you'll see them. Apparently they are blowing out these and a bunch of other CCM releases that have been discontinued in the wake of wholesaler Super D's acquisition of Infinity Resources (parent company of both DeepDiscount and CCM). I picked up all four for $14 and change shipped, only remembering after the fact that free shipping is offered on all orders of $15 or more. Whoa.........thanks for the heads up on that! Got Signe's Farewell, Grace's Debut and Return to the Matrix for $11.06. Nice!
  22. This box is going to be a fun listen. As far as the Airplane - one of my Top 5 favorite 60s bands. They may be "of a time", but a lot of music is - from ALL genres. Doesn't make them any less enjoyable to listen to. The band as a whole (during their peak, pre-Bark years) was more talented than any of the individuals, IMO. Each musician played a crucial part in the overall sound.
