  1. Some interesting options here: Thinksound
  2. Interesting. I picked it up remaindered years ago. Great album!
  3. 3rd June San Francisco, CA, Slim's Sweet!
  4. Damn! I had no idea. I just paid $20 for it (used, but in new condition) at Amoeba. Oh, well ...
  5. Tony Williams Tribute Band at Yoshi's Cindy Blackman-Santana has completely channeled Tony - what a performance. One jaw dropping drum "clinic" after another tonight. VERY intense. Everyone else was "on", too. John Medeski (doing his own channeling of Larry Young), Jack Bruce (masterful as expected) and Vernon Reid blazing away on guitar (although oddly under-miked). The show itself wasn't as loud as I had expected - powerful for sure, but not uncomfortably over-amped. Carlos came out for the last number which started out as a jam/riff, but quickly morphed into "Sunshine of Your Love". Ultimately a little silly, but they did pull it off and everyone went home happy. I saw them last Friday at the Blue Note in NYC- they were smokin' hot! Medeski was not much more than a bit player at the set I saw, but the other three were marvelous. Jack Bruce played very well, Vernon Reid played some excellent stinging guitar, and Cindy Blackman was INCREDIBLE. She never let up, and it fit the music perfectly. I wondered how she could play a second set after playing so much in the first set-she's got some energy. "She never let up..." Exactly!
  6. Saw the last day of the Cartier-Bresson exhibit at the SFMoMA. Good show, but a little too crowded (to be expected) and could have used a little editing. Sometimes bigger is not better.
  7. Picked up the album directly from Aum (along with the organ disk). So far, so good. Nice packaging, too. Plus a note on the cardboard stiffener in the package: "Enjoy" Would definitely order from them again. Good, quick service.
  8. Got the album from Aum. There is that thinness to the organ sound, but when listening to the entire cuts, it works.
  9. Sad - but it sounds like he's soldiering on and doing OK, considering ... All the best to Bobby!
  10. Next Saturday at Yoshi's: Tony Williams Tribute Band
  11. If you want to record stuff, then a Looper is not the way to go. Those are generally for live effects. I have a Boss Looper and rarely use it (honestly, I never got the hang of using it on the fly). About the Avid, now that I've plugged the guitar in. Still in major learning mode, but realizing that if I want to take advantage of all the Midi instruments, I will have to get a Mid keyboard. Seems like this is going to lead to an endless stream of upgrades and additions. Probably have to get a mirror ball, too!
  12. Check out this insane video!
  13. The clips I'm hearing sound VERY interesting. Not "rinky" at all, unless you want to call Larry Young "rinky".
  14. Tonight! Anyone see this? William Parker’s ‘Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield’ (Friday) “I Plan to Stay a Believer” (Aum Fidelity), a recent album by Mr. Parker, the avant-garde bassist, takes as its subject the sinuous, urgent soul music of Curtis Mayfield. As he does on the album, he’ll take a freedom-seeking approach to that music here, with help from the poet Amiri Baraka, the singer Leena Conquest, the saxophonist Sabir Mateen, the pianist Dave Burrell and others. At 7 p.m., Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street, near Thompson Street, Greenwich Village , (212) 505-3474, lepoissonrouge.com; $15. (Chinen)
  15. I've been noticing that resale value on OOP Mosaics is significantly less than it was a few years ago. They still sell for a premium, but the days of 2-3 times the original cost seem to be gone. There are a few exceptions, of course - like Thad/Mel and Maynard.
  16. This is odd! The Complete Ahmad Jamal Trio Argo Sessions 1956-62
  17. I just picked up something called the Avid Recording Studio. It's an M-Audio Fast Track interface that comes bundled with Pro Tools SE (a/k/a "lite"). It's the first time I've used something like this and it looks like the learning curve might be a little steep. So far, I've only run some of the demo tunes and played around with the channels and a few instrument effects. Anyone have any interesting "getting started" tips?
  18. ... seminal work that the band recorded for Atlatnic
  19. There have been a lot of those people for quite a while. Every time eMusic changed their policy the board has been lit up with them. I agree, if you don't like the service get out, but don't hang your dirty laundry all over the board. Bottom line is, they went from 'too good to be true' (the "unlimited" days) to just 'cheaper than most'. Still a good source.
  20. I got that Zune HD 32. It's nice, it's small, it does what it's supposed to do.
  21. Cornell Woolrich (a/k/a Wm. Irish) Patricia Highsmith (Ripley series)
  22. You've read Chandler and Hammett, right?
  23. Henry Threadgill's No-Groove Groove Review by Kevin Whitehead on Fresh Air today.
  24. Read that............sounded great. Is he taking that on the road?
