  1. Nice piece about what Booker is doing these days. He’s a Soulful Survivor With New Music to Make
  2. I always thought that "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse" was a very cool and underrated album. RIP
  3. Grachan Moncur III Some Other Stuff (Rudy Van Gelder Edition), $3.29 (Amazon)
  4. FYI......the Lighthouse set is STILL $6.49 (!), so it's not a mistake.
  5. With the exception of the Hill and Hackett sets, these recordings are no longer available from Mosaic. Interestingly, the Hackett download is not a "fraction of the price", but just a few dollars cheaper. Given the lack of packaging and printed info, and the lower sound quality, I think these downloads are "reasonably" priced, and Mosaic isn't losing a dime. Bobby Hutcherson is still available, too. Good points, though.
  6. 9:15pm, 58 degrees Fog is: IN
  7. I'm still confused about these Capitol Vault sets. Are they exactly the same tracks as the Mosaics except without the great liners and (obviously) packaging? And what about Mosaic's remastering? Do these sets have that or did they just dump the original masters here? Overall, it seems unfair to Mosaic for Capitol to offer these at a fraction of the price. I obviously have no insight into the contractual arrangements for this stuff, but I feel bad for Michael & Co.
  8. Sorry guys, didn't mean to rub it in. Just wishing I could blow a little of it your way.
  9. That's a great one! "Death Walks Behind You" is one of my 'guilty pleasure DIDs'. Been a favorite since it came out.
  10. Not a problem here (SF). 67 degrees and dropping as the fog is rolling in for the evening.
  11. Good discussion, guys. I agree with pretty much everything you said, down to the 'lyrics don't matter' issue. I would focus more on the evolution of music from 1960-70, though - earth-shattering. That was a phenomenal period for music. There's been nothing like it, really, since then. The early-mid 70s was more an extension and refinement of that. Don't forget to include FZ and Van Vliet in that mix, too.
  12. No one has mentioned all those early Flora albums with Airto, Joe Hen, George Duke, etc.
  13. Are those Capitol Vault sets really the Mosaic Selects? Did Mosaic re-license them back to Capitol?
  14. I don't know what's available, but Opa was pretty good back in the 70's. They were Airto's backup band for a number of years.
  15. OK - makes sense. I would have gone with the liner notes, too. So, it looks like "Love on the Sudan" is a set of earlier versions of these tunes.
  16. What's wrong with him? Just age or something else? I have tickets to see him this Fall at SFJazz 'revisiting' Coltrane/Hartman with Chris Potter and Jose James (vocals).
  17. Like I said, I can't get to my albums now, but Billy's site indicates that album has the same lineup (no date shown). They have Fred on "In Europe," though.
  18. "The Awakening" (album) has that lineup. Maybe "Love on he Sudan" is from the same session. I have all those albums on LP with the liner notes, but they're boxed up and I can't easily get to them.
  19. What IS "Love on the Sudan", actually? All 3 of those tunes are on other albums. Are these different versions? Priestess, "In Europe" The Awakening, "The Awakening" Love on the Sudan, "Trying To Make Heaven My Home"
  20. As long as you definition of "real" includes CD-Rs and photocopied artwork... that's what my copy of "The Believer" from the Billy Harper fan club "label" was. Don't get me wrong, as long as Billy OKs it and makes some $$ off of it I'm good. But I do worry about the longevity of unknown CD-Rs. Later, Kevin I got one of those from the club, too - interesting.
  21. I was going to say, if you are OK with MP3's, eMusic has both of those albums. But it seems you got CDs already.
  22. Well.........I did see Tinariwen tonight! Very entertaining. Hard to pin down exactly what their music is, but to see them do it while playing Telecasters is something to see.
  23. Would like to see Tinariwen on Thursday, but probably won't be able to make it.
  24. FYI, there seem to be a number of Black Saint/Soul Note albums on Amazon selling for multiples of $.89/track if you are looking for some of this stuff cheap.
