  3. For raw, hard swingin' emotional playin' I like the Charles Tolliver LPs "Live At Slugs" vol 1 & 2 on Strata East.. Stanley Cowell-piano, Cecil McBee-bass, & Jimmy Hopps-drums swing with great passion on these sides! Jimmy Hopps kind of reminds me of Chicago drummer Wilbur Campbell. ← FYI randissimo, those albums are on disk #1 of the Mosaic set in addition to some unreleased tracks from the same dates on disk #3. ← Thanks for the info BFrank.. I'll have to get the box set.. ← Oh, yeahhhhhhhhh. Disk #2 and part of #3 are from the "Live in Tokyo" set. Almost as smokin' as the Slugs stuff.

  5. I saw him about 15 years ago in Central Park. It WAS intense!

  7. Anyone ever say you have too much money? ← Well...........it was my girlfriend's idea. Anyway, that was last night. I would say that they were 1/2 good. They definitely are bumping up against John Tesh territory on some of their songs. Some of the early tunes from their classic period (60s/70s) still hold up, though. Mercifully, they only played a couple "new" tunes which were not very good. I was amazed at the enthusiasm of the crown, though. They definitely have a STRONG following and got 'standing Os' after almost every song.
  8. Don't forget "Grand Max" (which isn't on here, unless I'm mistaken). ← Nope........not mistaken.
  9. Don't tell anyone, but I'm going to see the Moody Blues tonight.

  17. Harold plays regularly with George Coleman and is on a number of his albums, too. And let's not forget his incendiary piano on Lee Morgan's "Live at the Lighthouse" set.

  20. Most of his films are character studies rather than plot-driven vehicles. I don't think he's making statements about the human condition or the fate of man, here. You could call that "style over substance" I suppose, but that would be independant of the quality of the films.
