  1. Here's a very good later group with Tom Harrell, Steve Goodwin and Joe La Barbera: Here's a closeup of the pin he was wearing:

  11. Nice post. Well said. Like many things in this world, personal relationships have a lot to do with poll standings. Now that's O.K., I want my coat pulled to a great recording in anyway possible, but there are so many independent releases and so many personal relationships that these lists get longer and more diverse. Outside of one or two releases, there is no consensus. When you add the factor that anyone with a blog is a music critic, it gets even muddier.

  15. That's authentic, 70's style shag! There may be some Naugahyde lurking in there too!
  16. Yes, Peter. I knew you had to be there. They were there for at least two nights. Happy Holidays!
  17. They were taken on June 29 - 30, 1977. The bass player is Lynn Milano. It was a real treat to see and hear Mary Osborne and Vi Redd!

  19. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
  20. Marcello...nice shot--from the Statler-Hilton in Buffalo, I'd guess. There was a businessman there named Bill Hassett who owned (I think) that property and presented lots of jazz in the main showroom. Tony Bennett, too, and he started the Improv label with Bennett. I think Concord owns those masters now. Herb Hall had a lovely toupee there, didn't he? Or was it chilly and he wore a wool cap? BTW, have you ordered the Vic CD? I hope... Yes Ted, it was at the Statler, where I heard a lot of great music. I believe that Herb Hall was subbing for Buddy Tate, who IIRC, scalded himself in a hot shower while on tour ( in Iceland of all places!). Helen Humes sang, Major Holley on bass and Marian McPartland on piano, also. I'm ordering the cd right away as a little Christmas gift for myself!
  21. Love Vic! here's a photo of mine for you: Jimmy McPartland, Herb Hall & Vic Dickenson Buffalo, N.Y. 1975
  22. Oh come on ... really now. You know others might think it terribly lame to wield camera equipment around, hopping to and fro in front of the stage and flashing away like mad. (Not me, I've done my fair share of image taking too, but there are moments when I understand each and everyone who thinks this is lame because every now and then there are events where the bunch of "self-appointed pro" photographers who get into the (seated) audience's way just is too numerous). To each his own, then, O.K.? That's what I said!
  23. Lame for me, not for you!
  24. Teresa Brewer & a whole lot of people:
