  5. Here's a Night Lights show I did about this topic: Jazz, Spiritually Speaking ... which overlaps somewhat with a post I wrote for NPR's Take Five series: Wade In The Water: Five Jazz Takes On Spirituals Deep waters to wade in!
  6. So Nolan Arenado's apparently deeply unhappy to be a Rockie now (dude, why did you sign that extension?!), but it doesn't sound as if Colorado's going to trade him. Sounds as if retirement's likely. So Dan, who are you favoring to lead the Red Sox, now that Mr. Cora has left in disgrace? Varitek? (I seem to recall your mentioning him shortly before they hired Cora.) Other? I've heard they may be interested in Mets bench coach Hensley Meulens. Some Yankees fans were pulling for him when he interviewed before the 2018 season. I don't know all that much about him. Seems like there's going to be a real scramble for the Astros, Red Sox, and Mets, with two top-tier managers fired/suspended (I would not be surprised to see somebody hire Hinch after this season; murkier waters ahead for Cora, given that he may face a longer suspension and has been so directly implicated in the Houston scheme, but I could see him coming back eventually as well) and a promising newcomer (Beltran) out of the picture as well.
  7. I remember a show with Ethel Waters, Roy Eldridge and Jo Jones.
  8. Well there was John Waters' film Hairspray, then John Waters' Broadway musical version of the film, then the film version of the Broadway musical version of the film, then the live TV musical version of the Broadway musical version of the film -- audiences did not seem to get confused and each production seemed to meet with success. And Mel Brooks did a similar repackaging with The Producers and Disney did the same with The Lion King. It just seems odd that so many recent(ish) Broadway musical successes have had movie versions made -- Rent, Les Miz, Dreamgirls, Mama Mia, Sweeney Todd, Into The Woods, Evita, Jersey Boys, -- all except this one. I honestly don't know if the decision not to make that movie was Hollywood's or Mr. Herman's.
  9. I watched the Butterfield documentary last night on Amazon Prime-Excellent. I lost track of Paul after the early Bloomfield years. His use of horns(more than just one sax) brought a new dimension to electric blues bands anchored by guitar/harp combos. Plus his acceptance by the old timers (Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) helped open up white audiences to this genre, and as previously mentioned here, would revitalize their careers. The interviews in the doc (especially by Elvin Bishop) were enlightening...
  10. Yes. As a matter fact, I actually considered mentioning Mayall as a British Butterfield equivalent, but I didn't want to muddy the waters (sorry, I couldn't resist).
  11. I don't think you can underestimate the importance Paul Butterfield in terms of bringing the blues to a younger audience. Listening to him in the late 60's made me start looking into other artists like Muddy Waters, Albert King, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy & Junior Wells, Charlie Musselwhite and many others. He was largely responsible for my continuing, life long interest in the blues.
  12. I've never seen mayonnaise ON french fries, but in Belgian restaurants I see that pommes frites come with a container of mayo (aoli) on the side and you DIP one fry at a time into it. Just a little. It's not SPREAD over a pile of fries like ketchup. Maybe some places spread it over but I haven't seen that. I''m kinda surprised gumbo hasn't been mentioned. Wikipedia will usually says it's a soup or stew. I disagree. It's its own thing. I fix chicken soup, chicken stew, and chicken gumbo and they are all very different from one another. Well, chicken stew is closer to chicken gumbo than chicken soup is. But we call it chicken fricassee. Cajuns may state forcefully that gumbo has NO tomatoes in it. That's New Orleans style. I disagree with that too. I grew up in Vermilion parish which is one of the most Cajun parishes there is., Even when I went to school the cafeteria ladies fixed okra and shrimp gumbo and it DID have a little bit, not a lot, of tomato in it. It was definitely NOT a New Orleans recipe. I doubt those cafeteria ladies knew any New Orleans recipes! My mother used a little and so do I when I make it. How do you dress your hamburgers? I put ketchup on the bottom bun and mayo on the top bun. Lettuce and tomato and top of the patty. For steamed or boiled shrimp or crawfish a lot of Cajuns fix their own sauce at the table -- a mixture of ketchup, mayo, and worcestershire sauce. For oysters you vary that with a little bit of horseradish. Restaurants used to put all those ingredients on the table and you fixed your own sauce at the table. I don't know why but in English we don't say make something, we say fix something. But in French we DO say fait (make or do). Even in A Confederacy of Dunces, set in New Orleans, the characters say "Fix me a weenie" (Make me a hot dog) to the Lucky Dog representative. I guess it's both Cajun English and Yat.
  13. The Madonna show was interesting. She's playing smaller theaters, but multiple nights at most stops. It's not a greatest hits type concert, but focuses mostly on her newest material. It's more of a Broadway type show than a concert. It includes conversations with the audience, her politics, dancers, interactive video work (sort of like Roger Waters' Wall shows, but probably not as elaborate), a women's choir from Portugal, and only 4 or so songs that were played on MTV back in the day. They do take your phone and lock it in a small bag during the show, but you hold the bag, so it's never out of your possession. Annoying at first, but this type of show I think benefited from the lack of constant pictures and video recording. It also got moved from an 8:30 start to a 10:30 start, on a Tuesday night, which sucked for me on a work night. Some fan in Florida sued her for moving the starting time for all of her shows from what was originally publicized.
  14. Dan, thanks for taking the plunge into my waters, which I know often aren't your cup of tea! I do appreciate the support, and this BFT has been a much happier experience for me than last year's. Amazing that two people ID'd #2, thought that was the toughest one. You are also correct on #7 being Eric Alexander, and #9 being the Blakey Jazz Messengers with Woody Shaw. Hope you further check out the artist on #8, especially as you move to listening to larger groups more. Actually surprised (and pleased) that you like #5. Artists in #1,#5,#6 are (or were) Philly guys from the era when I cut my jazz teeth.
  15. Finally! My apologies for the delay. Rough start to the week here. I may keep my comments spare, we'll see... I had wanted to write a bit about each piece but I just haven't had any time. I had a few different semi-intentional themes here... women in jazz, Chicago, Coltrane...and I guess Odean Pope. 1. "Holy Waters" (Carlos Garnett) from NORMAN CONNORS - Love From the Sun (1974) Norman Connors - drums Dee Dee Bridgewater - vocals Onaje Allan Gumbs - piano Buster Williams - bass Carlos Garnett - soprano sax Gary Bartz - alto sax Hubert Laws - flute Eddie Henderson - trumpet Bill Summers/Kenneth Nash - percussion I actually learned about this album right here on this forum back in 2010. I was trying to ID this track from an online playlist and JSngry helped me out! -- 2. "I Remember Clifford" (Benny Golson) from MAX ROACH - Chattahoochee Red (1981) Max Roach (doesn't play on this tune!) Cecil Bridgewater - trumpet Odean Pope - tenor sax Calvin Hill - bass Incredibly, I have only recently discovered this album. How is it possible this has never been issued on CD? I can't describe in words how much I love this record. -- 3. "Saxophone Shop, Part 2" (Pope) from ODEAN POPE - Out For a Walk (1990) Odean Pope - tenor sax Gerald Veasley - 6-string elec bass Cornell Rochester - drums Odean part two. Love this record. But yes, the first thing that made me go "wow" was that bass solo. -- 4. "Ecstasy" (Hope) from ELMO HOPE ENSEMBLE - Sounds From Rikers Island (1963) Elmo Hope - piano Lawrence Jackson - trumpet John Gilmore - tenor sax Freddie Douglas - alto sax Ronnie Boykins - bass Philly Joe Jones - drums Classic Elmo Hope...a favorite of mine. Thom Keith nailed Gilmore on this! -- 5. "Portrait of Light" (Bankhead) from FREQUENCY - Frequency (2006) Ed Wilkerson - clarinet, bells Nicole Mitchell - flute Harrison Bankhead - cello, bells Avreeayl Ra - kalimba, percussion I don't see a lot of people talk about this album, but it's fantastic. This is one of the mellower tracks...I find it beautiful. If you are at all into Nicole Mitchell and/or the AACM you need to check this out. -- 6. "Jihad" (Rene McLean) from DOUG CARN (feat. JEAN CARN) - Revelation (1973) Doug Carn - keys Jean Carn - vox Olu Dara - vox, trumpet Rene McLean - vox, alto sax Nathan Page - guitar Walter Booker - bass Earl McIntyre - bass trumpet Ira Williams - drums A personal favorite. -- 7. "All the Things You Are" (Kern) from CONNIE CROTHERS - Perception (1974) Connie Crothers - piano Joe Solomon - bass Roger Mancuso - drums Yes, Crothers was a disciple of Tristano, which is obvious here. But is it wrong to say I like her better? I believe this was her first album. On later records she evolved to an amazing level, IMO. -- 8. "Gloria" (Williams) from MARY LOU WILLIAMS TRIO - Free Spirits (1975) MLW - piano Buster Williams - bass Mickey Roker - drums Been checking out a lot of Mary Lou Williams the past several years and this is a favorite. Love the easy, soulful feeling of this tune. There are other tracks on this album that better showcase Williams' piano prowess, but for whatever reason I went with this one. This is a bonus track on the CD, it's not on the original LP. -- 9. "Central Park West" (Coltrane) from ERNEST DAWKINS - Afro Straight (2012) Ernest Dawkins - alto saxophone Willerm Delisfort - piano Junius Paul - bass Isaiah Spencer - drums Ruben Alvarez - percussion Dawkins is one of my favorite modern saxophonists, I've seen him 5 or 6 times, mostly in Chicago where he hails from. In fact I bought my copy of this disc from the man himself and he kindly signed it for me. I love his take on this tune and his solo in particular. This album is much more inside than most of what he does. -- 10. "Dear Lord" (Coltrane) from MARILYN CRISPELL TRIO - Live in Zurich (1990) Crispell - piano Reggie Workman - bass Paul Motian - drums I think Crispell must love this tune, judging by the way she plays it and the fact that I have another recording of her doing this with Joseph Jarman. I feel the spirit of Trane in this. -- 11. "Solo for Unaccompanied Bass" (Brown) from RAY BROWN - Bass Hit! (1957) Brown - bass Ray Brown will always be the man. Sadly this is the only solo bass track from this LP, and I believe the only solo bass track he ever recorded. It's a beautiful piece of work, IMO. -- 12. "Cultural Differences" (Reid) from HEAR IN NOW - Not Living in Fear (2017) Mazz Swift - violin, voice Tomeka Reid - cello Silvia Bolognesi - bass I'm still becoming familiar with this album but it's pretty incredible. This particular track is just stunning to me. I think someone on Twitter mentioned it and when I knew Tomeka Reid was involved I knew I had to have it. -- 13. "Arashi No Yoru Kimi Ni Tsugu"* (Watanabe) from KAZUMI WATANABE & RESONANCE VOX - Pandora (1991) Kazumi Watanabe - guitars Vagabonde Suzuki - electric bass Rikiya Higashihara - drums Tomohiro Yahiro - percussion Asuka Kaneko - violin Zakir Hussain - tabla * "To the Stormy You"? (according to Google Translate) Yes, I know this was the wildcard. What can I say? I love Kazumi. And Asuka Kaneko on violin is absolutely ON FIRE here. -- 14. "Have Mercy Upon Us / Chant" (Myers) from AMINA CLAUDINE MYERS - Song for Mother E (1980) Amina Claudine Myers - organ, voice Pheeroan AkLaff - drums, gong, little instruments, voice Words are going to fail me on this one. Myers is beyond category and there are no superlatives I can use that will be enough for her. This piece is an 11 minute trip to somewhere beyond this world...a trip I want to take as often as possible. -- And there it is! Thanks to all who listened and commented. Phew! Now I can go check out BFT 189!
  16. A patty-type construction made of puffed rice, sometimes with additional flavoring, sometimes not, It's a staple of dieting, because it's filling(ish), it's got flavor (sorta), and it's mostly air. Actually, there's a brown rice version that is tasty enough to eat by itself. Those are pretty good!

  18. Caught the Last Waltz 40 Tour at the Tower Theater in Philly last night. I don't know much about the background of this, but I saw some amazing musicians playing some amazing music for almost 4 hours. Warren Haynes, Jamey Johnson, and Lukas Nelson on guitars & vocals, with John Medeski, Don Was, and Terence Higgins on keys/bass/drum. Also a full horn section (Mark Mullins and the Levee Horns) and guests Cyril Neville, Dave Malone from the Radiators, and Bob Margolin (who was in Muddy Waters' band and was in the original Last Waltz film/show). Got to chat with Haynes, Medeski, and Blue Note President Don Was after. All very friendly. Going back out to see my Texas buddies the Flatlanders tonight.
  19. Ron Thorne, man of the world, Jazz drummer and all around great guy died a few hours ago after a decade-long battle with COPD. Ron was 76. My condolences to his wife Patty, who was by his side to the end. I met Ron on the Jazz Corner and considered him one of my on-line friends. It's weird that we never meet some of these "friends" but still feel the loss as if they lived down the street. Ron's son Justin posted this on FB: Justin Thorne After a lengthy, nearly 11-year battle with COPD, my father Ron Thorne has left us today, in his sleep in the early hours of his 76th birthday. Very happy to have been by his side for the final 6 days, and to surround him with as much of his favorite music as circumstances allowed. For a patient who was ruled out of surviving countless times, he outdid every prognosis they made, and always did everything on his terms.
  20. Thanks for the early feedback! I knew you would get those two! Well done! In fact here's an old post that will illustrate where I first heard "Holy Waters" and will also indicate at least one other person who will ID this one correctly. ... I've checked out a little bit of Jean Carn from that Philly Intl era and dug it.
  21. Well, you threw two right in my wheelhouse! #1 is "Holy Waters" from Norman Connors' 'Love From The Sun' with Dee Dee Bridgewater, and #6 is "Jihad" from Doug and Jean Carn's "Revelation". Great performance, but I can see how Jean might not have been too happy singing those lyrics, and she split soon after. Her next stop was Philly International Records with Gamble & Huff, quite a change in direction (though she still sounded great on those underrated PIR albums). Lots of other fascinating sounds on this BFT, which I look forward to exploring in more detail. The pianist in #7 sounds like he spent a lot of time listening to the early Cecil Taylor albums, and the group in #13 sounds like they spent a lot of time listening to the first few Mahavishnu Orchestra albums. Looking forward to spending time with this BFT and to the ultimate reveal. I like the organ in #14. I hope others here are willing to let your BFT stretch their ears.
  22. My daughter and I were down on the second row, center. We left Plano at 4, had dinner on the square in Denton by 5-ish, hopped into Recycled for a quick minute (found a Norman Simmons record with Clifford Jordan for $8, seemed like a steal), and then moseyed on over to the campus. Got there in plenty time before they opened the doors to the Lyceum and we had our pick of seats. Leaving early was a luxury, but I've made the drive too many times to do anything else, especially now that ALL that "in-between space is developed...just too many damn cars for the existing highways. Traffic started getting thick on the outskirts of Denton a little before 5, and you know it only gets worse the later it gets. So, yeah, we left at 4 to make a 7:30 gig with what in theory should be a 1 hour drive. I also heard the Turner thing going on. Not my favorite either, but what made it interesting for me was how he was navigating those structures, odd/overlapping meters and asymmetrical harmonic sequences. I could only sort of pick up on the specifics, but definitely heard recurring base/pivot points. To be able to stay afloat, much less swim, in those waters...hey. And to my surprise, I really enjoyed his EWI playing, which put me in mind of prime Joe Zawinul, only in the context of those structures. Did not see that one coming! Berliner cracked me up a few times, she sometimes sounded like Lionel Hampton with her time and her arpeggiations. Lionel Hampton! Of course, that was just in spots. Too bad that whatever it was that malfunctioned malfunctioned. Nick Dunston was really on it. Him & Sorey were locked in. Certainly agree that the crowd was too small. Just keep in mind that the gig was not sponsored by the School Of Music in any of it's manifestations, although apparently the proposal for and submission to the fine arts Series was put together by this guy: https://music.unt.edu/faculty-and-staff/christopher-walker Current gig is Adminstrative Assistant for Jazz Studies, degree is in Composition, so he's sorta in No Man's Land as far as that goes. But he made this happen, so good for him. I just doubt that he had any real "institutional juice" behind him along the way, at any point. Ticket prices were already low, but I found out they were $5 for alumni. The test question was "what were the school's teams called in the 70?" which was DUH, Mean Green, of ocurse, THAT was easy),. And then they gave that price to my daughter for being the child of an alumni.
  23. How are the waters muddied? That record company said ok (apparently), Chuck didn't. Seems pretty simple to me.
