More evidence that we all hear differently. 😉 I lent this to a friend having not listened to it in years. I thought it'd be right up his street. He hated it. Teasing the Korean Posted August 27, 2023 Report Posted August 27, 2023 The Hellers - Singers...Talkers...Players...Swingers...& Doers (Command) A totally whacked album! 40 minutes ago, jlhoots said: Nice cover photo. Never heard of Skip Martin. He was an arranger. Not sure if we was directly connected with the show, or if the album was a promotional tie-in. 5 hours ago, HutchFan said: Next up: The Bill Evan Album (Columbia, 1971) I should revisit this album. The cover art and the Rhodes were both stumbling blocks for me. I do like electric pianos in other contexts, though. Quote

As for the music, it's never been an album that's blown me away either. It's good -- on some days I might even say very good -- but nothing more than that. I really enjoy this particular BE trio (with Gomez & Morell), but I think they did their best work elsewhere. Now spinning: I have this version of Ben & Sweets in my collection. Rabshakeh Posted August 28, 2023 Report Posted August 28, 2023 Kids in a bad mood so I'm letting them spin records to cheat them up. First up daughter (3) with a cover she likes. Gone down well for a first listen. Second up, son (5) wants the "really good one with American peoples and they're looking down at the city and it's really... beat-ey". Some imagination and I figured it out... Quote

After all we tend to like the same things mostly I like that one. I wish I could connect with Foster's 70s big band work a bit more. Tried several times and just can't get into it -- and certainly I'd say it's my ears, not his charts or the recordings. Quote

I think this archival recording -- recorded in 1977 but only released in 2007 -- is probably Foster's best with his Loud Minority Band: Perhaps it might make for an easier path into his music? Good entry ! That´s how it was. All we boys at hi school wanted to "play Miles Davis", buying huge sunglasses, bendin down and mimicking a wah wah trumpet, he was Mr. Super Cool. I was lucky I could manage both of it. The acoustic with Trane or with Wayne Shorte, as much as the early electric and the post 73 stuff. Saw him with "Lieb" at Stadthalle Vienna. Quote
