jazzbo Posted August 24, 2024 Report Posted August 24, 2024 There are two 2 cd sets called "Last Sessions" that have all star small ensemble recordings by Shaw that are wonderful. Quote

Thanks, will check those out. I also ordered the Self Portrait box (used) which is supposed to arrive today. Quote

gmonahan Posted September 8, 2024 Report Posted September 8, 2024 Scott Wenzel's lovely epitaph for Dan Morganstern in which he discusses the latter's notes for this set caused me to get it out and give it a listen. Quote
adh1907 Posted September 12, 2024 Report Posted September 12, 2024 J J Johnson, JJ, Mosaic Singles CD. What a beautiful CD. Great sound, great players. Love the 2 McFarland arrangements. Quote
ghost of miles Posted September 16, 2024 Report Posted September 16, 2024 (edited) Prompted to pull this one off the shelf last night after a friend mentioned that he’d been listening to it. The set includes a session that Getz and Raney recorded for Prestige in 1953. Are there any other Mosaic sets that include dates done for any of the labels that eventually came under the Fantasy umbrella? (Later absorbed into Concord) That catalogue always seemed to be a no-fly zone for Mosaic—I’m assuming that was because Fantasy preferred to issue their catalogue themselves. The Getz-Raney Prestige date on the Mosaic was done under Raney’s leadership… maybe that factored into Fantasy’s willingness to license when this set was being put together in 1989/90? T.D. Posted October 22, 2024 Report Posted October 22, 2024 (edited) Listened to the whole set over the weekend. Doubt that any of the individual albums rank as "classic", but the package works really well and is one of the Mosaics I play most often. Edited October 22, 2024 by T.D. Quote

Jim and Susan Neumann are friends and I have fond memories of listening to "pre-release" tapes in their living room. Quote
T.D. Posted November 7, 2024 Report Posted November 7, 2024 Maybe not the most imaginative selection, but it's of course excellent and an "old reliable". Quote

jazzbo Posted November 7, 2024 Report Posted November 7, 2024 Art Hodes is good for that! I'm going to revisit the Lennie Tristano set soon to achieve the same. Quote
