Free For All Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Just picked this up at Borders, used my 30% off coupon, so with tax it was about 97 bucks. Looks great, I'll be looking forward to tearing into it this weekend. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 (edited) It would be great if those who have this set could describe the previously unreleased cuts. The On the Corner stuff is great. It includes the segment used by Bill Laswell for “What If” on Panthalassa. “Chieftain,” as I mentioned before, is the same tune that opens In Concert at Philharmonic Hall. The “Turnaround” tracks are the same tune from the second part of “Prelude” on Agharta. Some of this music was used on Panthalassa. “The Hen,” “Big Fun-Hollwuud,” and “Peace” are kind of dull along the “Billy Preston” lines and lack the edge the band had in its live shows. “Mr. Foster,” recorded the day after “Calypso Frelimo” in 1973, is a good one. It sounds like “For Dave,” which closes Agharta and Pangaea and is on the latter part of Side 2 of Dark Magus. Confusingly, the more mainstream “Minnie” from 1975 is also known as “Mr. Foster.” “Hip Skip” and “What They Do” are from 1974 and include Dominique Gaumont on guitar. The former song features Pete Cosey on drums and was performed on a few live bootlegs from this period; the latter is a great stop-start guitar-fueled rave-up not unlike the “Turnaroundphrase” finale on Dark Magus. Good ears! Woulda taken me forever to figure that out...may I quote you in a review I'm writing? Dana PS Is your avatar the rare AA Hot Rod Hits LP? Edited November 1, 2007 by danasgoodstuff Quote

Rosco Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Diggin' 'Ife' a lot more than I used to do too, thanks to this remix. Actually, the previously issued tracks are all in their original mixes. Guess there's some extra beef in the mastering. Quote
Daniel A Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Got this one today (not by mail, but from a friend at Sony-BMG ), but will wait until the weekend before I start to get through the box. BTW, it's almost impossible to get the book/discs out of the box. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 That first page drawing of the 'devil' playing the tambourine sure had me laughing my head off though. Inspired ! According to the notes, it looks like they commisioned Corky McCoy to do some more artwork, this being one of them. Quote

Must be (although the 'Big Fun' 2CD did also sound pretty good). Incidentally, it's also interesting just how much of the material on 'Unknown Sessions' CDs 1 to 3 from the 72-75 period didn't make it onto this set. Edited November 1, 2007 by sidewinder Quote

What are the Unknown Sessions CDs 1 to 3 from the 72-75 period? These were collections of studio out-takes, which appeared on 'dime' not too long ago. Just noticed today also that Amazon UK's price dropped down to £44.99 Edited November 1, 2007 by sidewinder Quote
sidewinder Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 (edited) And just noticed a great little interview video in Miles' old back garden with Henderson, Cosey and Leibman here: Miles Video Edited November 1, 2007 by sidewinder Quote
Rosco Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 (edited) A discographical question.... The 'Unedited master' of 'One and One' (which is completely different to the issued track and which was party issued as 'What If' on Panthalassa) is credited to the June 6th session, where one David Creamer played guitar. But... that has to be McLaughlin on guitar! So, is the date wrong? Is the attribution of the title wrong? Is Creamer a note-for-note McLaughlin clone? (Edited to note this is one of the highlights of the box for me.....) Edited November 2, 2007 by Rosco Quote
medjuck Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Got mine from CDU today, but there's a decent-sized dent in the lower right corner. It doesn't seem to have any effect on anything, but it's a little bit of a drag. Should I ask for a replacement, or would that be too picky? It costs over $100, after all. Mine's got a dent on the upper left even though CDU packed it in that styrofoam popcorn stuff. I noticed that as with the only other metal box (the Miles/Trane) it's slightly difficult to get the "book" in and out. But great looking package. Quote

BTW, it's almost impossible to get the book/discs out of the box. Yes, Daniel, the spine is not strong enough to stay wrapped around the contents. If you check the Miles/Coltrane box - also 'metal in metal' - you'll find the spine is thicker and stronger. This is a mistake! Quote
skeith Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Can it be safely assumed that this box will come out later in a long box, no metal spine, somewhat cheaper version as the other Miles Columbia boxes have all done? Quote
Aggie87 Posted November 2, 2007 Author Report Posted November 2, 2007 Can it be safely assumed that this box will come out later in a long box, no metal spine, somewhat cheaper version as the other Miles Columbia boxes have all done? If Vince Wilburn decrees it, so will it be. Quote

If you check the Miles/Coltrane box - also 'metal in metal' - you'll find the spine is thicker and stronger. This is a mistake! I checked, and you're right. Most certainly to cut costs. Can it be safely assumed that this box will come out later in a long box, no metal spine, somewhat cheaper version as the other Miles Columbia boxes have all done? I think so - if the initial run is selling out, that is. The Sony guy (not that he knows everything, but I trust him on this) said that the long boxes are much cheaper to produce - understandably - and that further, presumably smaller, runs of previous boxes therefore are manufactured in this design. sal Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Can it be safely assumed that this box will come out later in a long box, no metal spine, somewhat cheaper version as the other Miles Columbia boxes have all done? Yeah, but this is the best packaging of all the boxes. The embossed characters are a riot! Quote
sidewinder Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 (edited) I'm quite enjoying the track 'Minnie' on CD5, which is also on one of those 'Unknown Sessions' boot CDs as 'Latin' but with about 5 takes. The tune has quite a resemblance, of course, to the Ripperton single 'Loving You', which must have been a hit at around the time this session was done. Edited November 2, 2007 by sidewinder Quote

GregK Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Can it be safely assumed that this box will come out later in a long box, no metal spine, somewhat cheaper version as the other Miles Columbia boxes have all done? But they all haven't come out in the longbox. The Seven Steps and the Cellar Door sets have yet to appear in the longbox, so I'm wondering if they are even still producing those. Quote
bobbelden Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 (edited) "Ife" is not a remix......remastered from the original 2-track master.... Edited November 3, 2007 by notme Quote
sidewinder Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 'Jabali' is a real gem on disk 1 - so good it's suprising that it didn't get issued at the time. I really like the reverb keyboard effects used on this track (Harold Ivory Williams? Lonnie Liston Smith?) and the brooding use of the bass clarinet a la Bitches Brew. The sound has been cleaned up considerably too from 'Unknown Sessions'. Quote
