jeffcrom Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 Miles Davis - Complete On the Corner Sessions (Columbia); the Jabali/Ife session. Miles always sounded good on "Ife." I have a few amazing live versions from the next few years. Quote

poetrylover3 Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Sonny Rollins: Silver City, Disc 2. This features one of my favorte readings of "Skylark" by any artist. Stitt's Bits: Disc 2, "Blues up & Down" (Pick 1) Benny Carter: The Music Master, Disc 1, Tracks 1-5 (THe Chocolate Dandies 12/3/30 and 12/31/30), Tracks 6-14 (various ensembles all containing my hero, Chu Berry recorded 3/14/33, 5/18/33, 12/10/33) Gerry Mulligan: My Funny Valentine. This is a collection where I listen primarily and indiscriminately to Discs 2-4. Fabulous music. Quote

Stefan Wood Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 (edited) An excellent compilation of African music (north, south, and everything in between) which has very good sound from the 78s sources. I'm on disc 5 of this massive set. One has to look at this as a documentary, not a straight forward music compilation, as there are narration throughout. I'm loving it!!!! imeanyou Posted December 2, 2011 Report Posted December 2, 2011 P.E. Hewtt Jazz Ensemble. I picked this up at the main Disk Union jazz store in Tokyo for a ridiculous price brand new. Know nothing about him but so far not bad for a 16 year old. He's no Tony Williams though. Quote
fomafomic65 Posted December 2, 2011 Report Posted December 2, 2011 The 2009 Black Jazz records 20 cd Japan ed.box. I had this very expensive Japan edition because I'm a kinda compulsive/obsessive for completist compilations (I know, I'm in good company here). I decided after some readings stating short lived Black Jazz as very close to Strata East (wich I long love) and some YouTube tastes of their records (by Eric Reed, Henry Franklin, Walter Bishop mainly). As many of the Japan reissues this is really an accurate and satisfying edition ( japanese-only booklet apart). Billie Holiday 'Complete Verve', discs 7 and 8 Webster - Rowles - kessell - Edison... 1957 LA sessions masterpiece Quote
