Excellent really, but for some reason I've never been able to connect with it. Zoot was like Johnny Hodges in that he (almost) never played a flawed solo, but there is such a thing as Zoot over-saturation. Probably even Zoot would have agreed to that. Still, when he was on, it's like the best breakfast, the best coffee, and the finest slippers one can imagine. (Other analogies rightfully apply.) I think I find Al overall more exciting, but Zoot more reliable (if that makes any sense). I love both. Quote
Gheorghe Posted April 26, 2022 Report Posted April 26, 2022 I don´t think I have very very much Zoot. The first time I heard him on "Miles and Horns" on those things like "Tasty Pudding" , then I liked very very much the "Tenor Conclave" with Trane, Hank, Zoot and Al Cohn....., and the biggest surprise for me was that set of Zoot with the Bud Powell Trio at Blue Note Café in 1961 or 62. mhatta Posted April 26, 2022 Report Posted April 26, 2022 I don't know if there's a Zoot completist, but the recently released Lennie Tristano Mosaic Box features one track from The Half Note ca. 1962, "How Deep Is The Ocean" played by Lennie, Lee Konitz, Sonny Dallas, Nick Stabulas, and for some reason not Marsh, but Zoot...and he plays tastefully as always. Late Posted Saturday at 06:01 PM Report Posted Saturday at 06:01 PM Have really been enjoying ZOOT SIMS IN PARIS, from both 1956 and 1961. Both albums contain especially inspired soloing from Mr. Sims. Quote

Pulled it out the other day during a "U.S. visitors to France" moment. The session recorded the day before for the Club Francais du Disque (I Found A New Baby/Charlie Was in Rouen/Crazy Rhythm/Charlie Went To Cherbourg) is also worth a listen. I now see I discussed it briefly with King Ubu in this thread in 2007 (19 years on now ... this decidedly makes me feel OLD! ) For some reason the French original 10" has always gone for insane prices. I had found a clean copy of the German 10" release of this back in the early 90s and later was surprised to see the prices the French 10" on CfD went for on eBay even in the early 2000s. But it's been reissued several times by now. That 1961 Paris session has escaped me so far. Apparently reissued a million times in Japan but nowhere else ever. Will have to check it out anyway. I have a 1991 Japanese edition of this disc that happily contains both albums. I agree—both dates are swinging, and they really do belong together. 8 hours ago, Big Beat Steve said: I now see I discussed it briefly with King Ubu in this thread in 2007 (19 years on now...this decidedly makes me feel OLD! ) 🤫 None of us on this board have aged. 🤥 8 hours ago, Big Beat Steve said: That 1961 Paris session has escaped me so far. My edition is from 1991 as well, part of the second wave of "We 🖤 Jazz" series that Japan had at the time. The sound on those early 90's Japanese discs is almost always excellent. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted 20 hours ago Report Posted 20 hours ago Though Zoot Sims sound changed from his early period to his later period, I found his playing wonderful from start to finish. He is one of those jazz musicians who was so consistent in producing quality jazz, that it would be very difficult to select just a couple of favorite albums. Quote
