ASNL77 Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 (edited) I'm just relieved to hear that Mosaic is still releasing new projects. I think this one sounds interesting, especially given the sidemen that Lon mentioned. Sign me up! Same here! I'm not especially interested in that set but knowing that Mosaic are still planning future sets is enough to make my day. Good news. Edited September 14, 2009 by ASNL77 Quote
Niko Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 have my doubts whether this will work... a bing crosby set means competing with cheapo box sets in a market where mosaic doesn't have the good name it has with jazz nerds... (and, honestly, while i don't own any of the big boxes and thus possibly am not entitled to an opinion here... contrary to what many here say i don't find mosaics especially rewarding to look at...) their strength was knowing how to suit the nerds' needs... i doubt that the crowd they're targeting now cares much about what mosaic is good at... and since everybody says making money with cds (any cds) is difficult right now i doubt that bing crosby is that much of an exception... that said i don't have anything against the little crosby i heard and saw... doesn't mean i feel like owning 7 cds of him with the buddy cole trio (will look up that name now...) though... AllenLowe Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 (edited) how about a Bing and Bob set? Personally, I like the Bob Crosby band a lot - or - Bing and Bob and Paul - with some nice cuts from the Whiteman days - or Bing and Bob and Paul and George - a little collage of rock and pop - or....Bing and Bing, as Bing goes one on one with Dave Bing - or with that guy Rudolph Bing who used to run the Metropolitan Opera - or Crosby and Cosby, to mix jazz genres... or Crosby and Mosby - a little noir music - or best of all, Crosby, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - Edited September 14, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
porcy62 Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 or best of all, Crosby, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - I'd support a vinyl box sets of David Crosby : THE COMPLETE RECORDING OF 'IF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER MY NAME'. 42 HQ vinyls, a 120 pages booklet containing an original essay by Augustus Owsley Stanley III that you can read or lick or both. jazzbo Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 I'd definitely buy the smaller set of that, the five cd version with the shorter liner notes/smaller hit. Quote
RDK Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 John, George, Paul, and Der Bingle? Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 (edited) and let's not forget the famous trio - Bing, David, and Israel, the Fabulous Crosbys - and of course, the 2nd Sonny Boy Williamson, who was known to use the nom de plume Rice Crosby - Edited September 14, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote

That's actually a good point, unless they can market the living daylights out of a Set like that it will probably just sit on the warehouse shelf, there's no guarantee that it will be a cash cow that could fund other Sets. 7 cds will make it expensive even for Bing Crosby's biggest fans. kenny weir Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 now I'm seriously worried about the state of mind of Mosaic staff.......... My first reaction is you've got to be kidding ... I'm surprised by these sorts of reactions. It ain't like he's Kenny G or something. In fact, I'm surprised they haven't done a Bing set before. Or are you guys stuck with an (inaccurate) image of Bing in White Christmas/treacly ballad mode? Or should Mosaic strictly stick to its hard bop ghetto? Jazz? Yep. And BTW, Mosaic has done a Johnny Mercer set. Quote
tranemonk Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 I'll be skipping this one.. but I've got my eye on this new Sinatra release coming out in November... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...ER&v=glance I generally avoid the pop/jazz vocal icons... but the Sinatra has got me interested.... Teasing the Korean Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 Bing and Bob and Paul Sounds like a jump blues number! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 I'd say this is an interesting gamble by Mosaic. Not quite a "hail mary pass", but close. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I like Bing. I have quite a bit of the earliest Bing. I just am not sure I will want all that many discs with just a trio backing Bing; I like Bing with horns etc. I think it's a good move for Mosaic. It's not like they are going to print 10,000 sets and put them on shelves, they'll print 500, maybe less at a time and I think they'll have a big initial sale of these when introduced. (Just my estimation.) The Four Freshman set sold well. . . this may well too. Quote
Brad Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I was waiting for someone to mention the Four Freshmen Quote

Dave James Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 John, George, Paul, and Der Bingle? No, no. John, Paul, George and Bingo. Up over and out. Quote
Free For All Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 Crosby Still Thrash his Young? Quote
JSngry Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 7 CDs is too much for me, but damn, Bing Crosby is worthy, make no mistake. Now, when can we get some Ethel Waters? Quote
gmonahan Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I get just about everything Mosaic puts out, but I'll have to think long and hard about this one. I do have the GRP Decca jazz entry for Bing, and there's some good stuff there. I want the Ellington set! greg mo Quote

Stereojack Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 This set sounds interesting. I've got a couple of Decca LP's with the Buddy Cole Trio, and also the Shout Factory set. I wonder how much duplication there will be on the Mosaic set? Props to Bing, one of the greatest voices of the 20th century! I'd like to see a Boswell Sisters/Connee Boswell set myself. Although a lot of Connee's output may be considered schmaltzy by some, she was a marvelous talent, and more deserving of attention from too many people who don't know about her. Quote

There was talk of Mosaic doing a Boswell set a few years back, but it didn't pan out--not sure if it was licensing issues or what. Berigan might know more about it. Quote
