relyles Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 I am amazed so few of you had the lps or cd reissues. Major bummer for me. Really? Why so? Quote

bluesbro Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 I ordered the Threadgill box from importcds. At $28 including shipping, is a steal Quote

king ubu Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Lava lamps or Benny Lava videos on youtube? I'd rather get the next batch of Black Saint/Soul Note boxes instead! Quote

Rosco Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Contacted the folks at CamJazz regarding the sound problems with the David Murray set. Appears to be a problem during manufacturing; the set will be reprinted and they are sending me a replacement copy. If you have a faulty set contact info@camjazz.com Quote

Clunky Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 I've yet to be tempted significantly by this series. I have the Threadgill and it's excellent but I 'm not convinced that buying music by the kilo in this fashion does much for me. I listen to the single Nessa Air Cd more than the entire BS/SN set. I suppose that the Lacy and Konitz sets probably appeal to me the most but I have some of the contents already. The Russell also intrigues me as it's music I've avoided to date. Any strong recommendations on any of these?? Quote
Face of the Bass Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Yeah, I don't much care for the stripped-down presentation of this series. Of the ones I've gotten I do like the Steve Lacy very much, as I did not previously have that music. The other one I would have liked would have been the Bill Dixon, but I already have all but one of those discs so I'm not going to buy that set. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Of the three you mention, the Russell I find most intriguing. The sound on these sets is excellent. When I've comared discs within to discs I've had before, the new ones show real improvement. Contacted the folks at CamJazz regarding the sound problems with the David Murray set. It appears that one channel (either the left or right) has been folded out onto both channels. In other words we're only hearing half the stereo image. As was pointed out elsewhere, Craig Harris' trombone solo on the final track of New Life sounds like someone playing in the hall outside the studio. Quote
BeBop Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 I haven't really shopped, but the prices look pretty good at J&R, for the ones they have. Quote

Just checked my box - hadn't listened to it yet as only recently received it looks like I've got a dud one too I can also confirm that all 3 CD's Ming, Hope Scope & New Life are in mono (others are OK) - opened all of the tracks from each CD in audacity & was able to observe the wave forms Compared the Craig Harris trombone solo (Blues In The Pocket) from the boxed set & to an original CD that I still have (hadn't offloaded it yet) - what a difference!! time to send an email to Cam Jazz - has anyone actually received a reply from them confirming that they will replace the set? JohnS Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 I emailed Cam Jazz yesterday. I'll post as soon as I get a response. Quote

Their reply to my email: ...thank you for your email. Probably is a mistake of our manufactoring.....we will reprint this title and we can send another copy of Box Set of David Murray within a few days. I will advice you when the Box Set will be available. In the meantime you can please give me your address where I can send it. Best Regards CAMJazz Staff No word on availability as yet. Quote

They seem like a decent organisation. Edited January 13, 2012 by JohnS Quote
