Right now, the Blake is the only real "need" for me, and then to fill in more gaps than exist duplications, although, maybe, the Wheeler, should the compass ever begin really pointing that way. You never know. Life is short, but long until it's not.

Short Life of Barbara Monk, though, really, really fine music.

The Hill's a treasure trove for anyone who hasn't got the titles already.

The Mitchell and the Blake could both fill big holes in my collection. Interesting

Yes, I'm definitely getting the Hill. Seriously considering the Blake and Mitchell despite some duplication.

Trying to sort things out - asterisk means inlcuded:

*Max Roach Featuring Anthony Braxton - Birth and Rebirth  (Black Saint BSR 0024)
Max Roach - Pictures in a Frame  (Soul Note SN 1003)
*Max Roach and Cecil Taylor - Historic Concerts  (Soul Note SN 1100/1)
*Max Roach and Cecil Taylor - Historic Concerts  (Soul Note 121100/1-2)
Max Roach - In the Light  (Soul Note SN 1053)
Max Roach Double Quartet Live at Vielharmonic  (Soul Note SN 1073)
Max Roach - Scott Free  (Soul Note SN 1103)
Max Roach - It's Christmas Again  (Soul Note SN 1153)
*M'Boom - Collage  (Soul Note SN 1059)
*Max Roach - Survivors  (Soul Note SN 1093)
Max Roach Double Quartet - Easy Winners  (Soul Note SN 1109)
*Max Roach Double Quartet - Bright Moments  (Soul Note SN 1159)

So there really seems to be no rationale ... but with six more albums remaining, I guess chances for a second box aren't all that bad - at least I hope so! (With Muhal, I don't dare hoping so, thus got the missing pieces one by one - not exactly easy with some of them.)

That one, a live and a studio double quartet set, three quartet sets, that I can think of right off.  So enough for another box, yes, but still strange to me.  Also, why haven't the 70's RCA Roach quartets with Billy Harper ever seen CD?  And the Columbia quartet, "Chattahoochie Red"?  And why didn't the Roach Horo make it out when those other Horo sets did?  Roach as a leader in the 70's and early 80's is underrated, even as famous as he (rightly) is!

"Chattahoochie Red" would be most welcome. Max playing obbligato to MLK's "I have a dream..." speech is goosebump territory.

And the Ran set is a must for those who haven't been able to collect these titles. Each is worth having, but I would make special mention of the following.

• EPISTROPHY is a unique(ly) satisfying Monk tribute, one where the artist really adds something new to the stew.

• Similarly, DUKE DREAMS and Ellington/Sweet Pea.

• SHORT LIFE OF BARBARA MONK is simply one of the greatest jazz records you've likely never heard. Ricky Ford and Ran just kill together. Title track: damn.

There's a Roscoe Mitchell Black Saint box just out - definitely the best xmas present I got... 9 albums (including one led by Muhal and one by George Lewis) - nice timing for me as Roscoe's work as a leader is a recent obsession and I didn't have any of these

the latest bunch was first mentioned here:

I've since bought the Blake and the Mitchell ones ... I think I enjoy the Blake more - both were mostly new to me (I've got one of the Blake albums on vinyl, didn't know any of the Mitchell leader albums)

I don't have much Kenny Wheeler.  I've like what I have including "Angel Song" (with Konitz/Holland/Frisell) which is a tremendous recording.  Anyway, would this box be a good Kenny Wheeler intro/starting point?    Also, several people have said they like or plan to get the box, but there's been very little commentary about the music or bands, etc.  I'd be interested in what anyone has to say.

Thanks.

You might want to keep going with the ECM titles.  Deer Wan, Widow In The Window, Large and Small Ensembles are great albums.

I'd agree there. I have the titles off the box in question individually and they are very enjoyable. But you get the impression those ECMs are where he was at his most concentrated. For a more free flowing quintet go for Widow; for carefully constructed large band music, go for MfL&SE (which also has some less 'written' music on disc 2).

Haven't bought the Wheeler box yet ... but one not to overlook if you're into some of his freer stylings is "Song for Someone" (psi) - I enjoy that one very, very much!

Got an email today about another Black Saint sale at Import CDs, this time including the most recent batch which were released last November (those are 42% off suggested retail):

Black Saint sale

But still less expensive to order them from jazzmessengers.com!

CAM has teased us with the four upcoming boxes - or rather, just with the artists they'll be dedicated to - here's what's left for them, I think (correct me where I miss something):

David Murray:

David Murray Big Band - LIVE AT "SWEET BASIL" - VOL.1
David Murray - LIVE AT "SWEET BASIL" - VOL.2
David Murray - INTERBOOGIEOLOGY
David Murray - CHILDREN
David Murray With Dave Burrell - WINDWARD PASSAGES *
David Murray with Randy Weston - THE HEALERS

Mal Waldron:

David Friesen with Mal Waldron - REMEMBERING MAL
Judi Silvano with Mal Waldron - RIDING A ZEPHYR **
Steve Lacy, Mal Waldron - COMMUNIQUÉ *
All Star Session - REMEMBERING THE MOMENT
Mal Waldron Trio - OUR COLLINE'S A TREASURE
Mal Waldron with David Friesen - DEDICATION
Mal Waldron, Steve Lacy - SEMPRE AMORE *
Mal Waldron - UPDATE
Kim Parker with The Mal Waldron Trio - SOMETIMES I'M BLUE

Max Roach:

Max Roach - IT'S CHRISTMAS AGAIN
Max Roach Double Quartet - EASY WINNERS
Max Roach Quartet - SCOTT FREE
Max Roach Double Quartet - LIVE AT VIELHARMONIE
Max Roach Quartet - IN THE LIGHT
Max Roach Quartet - PICTURES IN A FRAME

Muhal Richard Abrams:

Muhal Richard Abrams - 1- OQA+19
Muhal Richard Abrams/Malachi Favors - SIGHTSONG
Muhal Richard Abrams - DUET feat. Amina Claudine Myers
Muhal Richard Abrams - COLORS IN THIRTY-THIRD
Muhal Richard Abrams - SONG FOR ALL
Muhal Richard Abrams - FAMILY TALK
Roscoe Mitchell & Muhal Richard Abrams - DUETS AND SOLO *

*) part of earlier boxes by Murray (Vol. 2), Steve Lacy (Duos & Trios) and Roscoe Mitchell, respectively

**) no one needs this, methinks!

Pretty cool to see the rest of Roach's albums coming out - I was disappointed by the first one in that it only contained three (out of six) discs that weren't duplicates of the Taylor and Braxton boxes!

As for Muhal, I've bought all the missing ones separately by now (already had a few of them when the first box arrived), but I'm in for the Waldron (I think), the Roach and the Murray!

The Muhal will be the second one I'll skip - the first one was the Jimmy Lyons, where I have the albums already (and why did they omit one of the duos from the Cyrille box? there's not going to be a second one by him, I assume, right - nothing left in the vault?

Be good to have the final Murray set.

Yeah, that's probably the only one I'll go for (I already own "Sightsong" by Abrams and the three Roach quartet sets).
