"Sightsong" is, to me, one of the two or three best albums he ever did ("Young At Heart/Wise in Time" on Delmark is my absolute favorite by him).

That's good that they're are completing some of the artists - will have to add these to my list 

BTW, "Windward" Passages was in the second Murray box

A Bobby Bradford set would be nice IMHO - that would include 2 John Carter releases (4 discs in toto)

Pretty cool to see the rest of Roach's albums coming out - I was disappointed by the first one in that it only contained three (out of six) discs that weren't duplicates of the Taylor and Braxton boxes!

As for Muhal, I've bought all the missing ones separately by now (already had a few of them when the first box arrived), but I'm in for the Waldron (I think), the Roach and the Murray!

 

The Muhal will be the second one I'll skip - the first one was the Jimmy Lyons, where I have the albums already (and why did they omit one of the duos from the Cyrille box? there's not going to be a second one by him, I assume, right - nothing left in the vault?

Any idea when these coming out?

No, they were mentioned in one of the regular newsletters recently (sometime in what's still sorta summer on the northern hemisphere), but I must have deleted that mail. Probably sometime in (late) autumn - the mail announcing the October new releases doesn't mention any boxes.

I'm definitely picking up the Murray and Abrams.  Have my doubts about the Waldron.  What about the Roach?

The Max albums...strong, but that band never made a full-on power record like the band with Billy Harper did. But still, strong band, fine records, and if you're short in the late Max department, this won't hurt even a little. Totally worth it for Odean Pope.

Also, there's enough in the Waldron set to make it interesting if you don't already have the individual albums.

Live in Amsterdam has especially inspired song choices on it.  Those Japanese Titles really need to be on CD.  Would make a great Mosaic Select.

I would like to get some George Adams for Christmas.  With Don Pullen?  Is the Soul Note material the best, or would you recommend something else?

The Soul Note material is five albums by two different groups. Gentleman's Agreement and Hand to Hand are by a quintet with Jimmy Knepper and George Adams in  the front line, a unique pairing that I really enjoy, Hugh Lawson on piano (very good and not much recorded) and Dannie Richmond on drums. Two excellent albums in my opinion. The other three albums are by the Adams/Pullen quartet. Don't Lose Control is a fine studio album), and then there are the two Village Vanguard live recordings. I haven't listened to the latter two in a while, but my recollection is that the recording engineer botched the session and failed to capture the group well enough, though the performance is quite good. So basically it's three recommended albums, and two with reservations about the sound but not the performance quality. Or you can get the two Blue Notes (Breakthrough and Song Everlasting) or any of the Timeless recordings with Pullen (Decisions, City Gates, Earth Beams, Life Line, or Melodic Excursions) (except I don't care for the one with John Scofield). It's all of comparable quality. For other Adams without Pullen, also good are Old Feeling (Blue Note) and Paradise Space Shuttle (Timeless).

The ongoing duplication in these sets is annoying. I've already got the Lacy/Waldron duo albums in the Lacy box, and now they're in the new Waldron box.

Difficult for them to avoid but smart shopping of boxes and used single cds can work to your advantage. I actually spent $36 for a used cd to complete my Abrams collection.

I bought the Bill Dixon box for 2 discs I didn't have.

Maybe someone should initiate a "spare Black Saint / Soul Note cds" topic.

I should add I am keeping a number of singles to compare with the mastering on the reissues. After the screw up on the Murray octet box, I'm not sure anyone is paying attention while making transfers.

BTW, Amazon is 20 dollars higher on some of these new boxes compared to Importcds.
