All Monk : The Riverside Album - WTF????

Recommended Posts

thanks man... I appreciate it...

Bummer on the no liner notes.. but as a way of getting this early Monk... $80 is ridiculous! :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:

I only have 3 or 4 of those early dates... What I find interesting is how much of a profit can they really make profit on this stuff? I mean even though they aren't adding anything you're talking about $5 a CD...

Don't get me wrong.. I'm not complaining...

okay well since everyone seems a bit indifferent to this.. two final questions...

1) If this is similar to the Miles set could someone post some photos (and discuss) the packaging. Even if they are in slipcases 16Cds is a lot.

2) Compared to the 1991 boxed set... How is the sound? And do we have an idea about alternate or unreleased takes???

thanks... I've got all the Columbia Monk but little of the Riverside...

Is ANYONE getting this?

Below is a picture of the Miles box. The discs themselves are in thin cardboard slipcases, just like the Original Album Classics series and the recent Black Saint/Soul Note sets. They are exactly the same as the old OJCs. No new remastering, no new alternates, no new notes.

I will be getting the set as a) I like this style of packaging and b) I don't really have $250+ to drop on the old Riverside box.

Nah, Bird's Savoy & Dial, all in one - 8CDs, and one of the most glorious sets ever!

Each alternate is worth having there, even if it's just a few seconds of a false start!

As for the Monk set, I fetched one of the cheap ones, without book (anyone has scans of that to offer? Please PM in that case!), and I agree: the whole bunch of music, including alternates, is great to have!

Since I'm in the middle of Robin Kelley's book on Monk (The Life and Times of A True American Original)... I'm even anticipating even more this set. For those of you who bought the Miles set.. I know they didn't do anything to the discs (e., remastering, etc.) but are there ANY liner notes?? How do you know who's playing on each disc??? Is it printed on the back of each slipcase? Or is there a booklet?

thanks

didn't put much effort into this list - but i just count 15... is there anything obvious missing? otherwise ideas for disc 16 would be the outtakes disc San Francisco Holiday or the sideman appearance with Clark Terry... but those wouldn't be typical for the series, or? on a related note, will these discs probably have alternate takes?

unreleased tracks from gigs recorded between 1959 and 1961: 3 quartet

cuts from the same Monk Orchestra 1959 show that yielded the 'At Town

Hall' album with Rouse, Sam Jones, and Art Taylor; 1 cut from a July

1958 Quartet show at the Five Spot with Griffin, Abdul-Malik, and Art

Blakey, right before the August shows of 'In Action'; 3 cuts from the

same night that yielded the 'At The Blackhawk' album with Land,

Gordon, Rouse, Ore, and Higgins; and 3 cuts from the same Paris

concert that yielded the 'In France' with Rouse, Ore, and Dunlop

(these 3 cuts, together with the 'In France' material, are roughly

more than the contents of the original double LP 'Two Hours With

Thelonious')

(NOTE - The expensive [$225], and now out-of-print, U.S. Monk -

Complete Riverside Recordings Box was 15 discs BUT had 153 tracks,

which included the Clark Terry Quartet record with Monk, other

alternate takes, and a few Monk cameos on other Riverside artist's

albums. This current box only has the 129 Monk tracks that were

originaly released on his own LP albums, plus a few alternates, and

the Jazzland and Milestone relevant material. But, at $5.60 a disc,

who could complain?!?! This is exactly what should be required for

study by the instructors of Intro To/Jazz 101 at all universities!)

16 CD Box Set for $90 !!!

Thanks for that list! I didn't realize that I already have 12 of those albums, which is to say that I'm not missing much. So when the time comes I'll just go for what I don't have rather than a complete set.

I don't have time as I'm getting ready for a conference, but I was quickly trying to work out from DMG's email to Hans which tracks, apart from the Clark Terry album, are missing from the new set (compared to the old one, which I am currently spinning). It was so complicated I couldn't work out which tracks were missing with accuracy. Since some of the missing tracks are third or fourth versions or partial takes it strikes me you don't lose too much. Out of curiosity, does anyone have time to mark up Couw's Monk transcript to show which tracks are missing? Uh, you know, when you're ready... (stuff like this drives me nuts, I like system and order... oh and chaos, filth and blurred margins I also like...
