mrjazzman
Saw Bobby Hutcherson on Friday night At Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland, CA 1-28-2011. His 70th birthday was on the 27th. I must say he looked in bad shape. He is frail and has to use a portable breathing device with the plastic tubing in his nose. I could see him gasping for air from time to time. Didn't realize he was that ill. He was with guitarist Anthony Wilson, local man steady Eddy Marshall on drums(played a beautiful tune on a flute sounding instrument, I think it's a Recorder)the pianist and bassist names escape me. Hutch's music is fine, but, it's sad to see him in his current physical condition at only 70 years of age. If you don't smoke(doesn't matter what)don't start, if you do smoke, STOP.....................
CJ Shearn
That's sad news. His breathing sounds labored on the cadenza of "I Thought About You" on Joey DeFrancesco's "Organic Vibes"
Hardbopjazz
Does he have emphysema? Yes, never light up anything if you haven't yet, and stop if you have.

CJ Shearn
We are fortunate that the playing on most recent releases featuring him is top shelf.

Here's an article on Thursday's show: http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainment-headlines/ci_17228236?nclick_check=1. . That's a great read. Didn't know he was ill, but it's great to hear he still has his "voice" and classic touch.
marcello
Bobby has been ill with emphysema for quite some time, but soldiers on. Here he is burnin' with Joe Locke on Mr. PC from, I believe, 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HlNHMT2-tg Edited January 31, 2011 by marcello

king ubu
Had no idea he's ill. Just played "Dialogue" three times on Sunday - and it really opened up my ears! I don't think I really "got" that one before, but really discovered it's beauty yesterday!
Durium
At the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam last summer, he was gasping for fresh air and needed a fan at his feet, but he played like a young God ...... webbcity
Oh my gosh...I had no idea he was ill either. This is tough news to hear. He's one of my favorite musicians.

Patrick
Man time flies, especially for our more experienced humans. I last saw Bobby as part of the 2006 SF Jazz Collective (the Herbie Hancock year). He looked in such great shape then, a vital force within a group of youngish allstars. I had a similar reaction a few years ago when I saw McCoy Tyner for the first time in several years. A bit shocked/saddened to see this old fellow [McCoy] shuffle onto the stage. Keep boppin' Bobby!!! (...if you remain up for it)

He's a local (Sacramento) musician who is really talented. He's played/toured with Hutcherson in recent years and can be seen/heard on some of the youtube clips of Hutch. Daniel A
Was listening to Total Eclipse the other day...don't think I'll be able to look at that cover the same way again, at least not for a while... My thoughts too. Same here - that's probably my favourite album of his. I think Total Eclipse is Hutcherson's best album as well as the best post-Lion Blue Note album from any artist. Sad to hear that Hutcherson is ailing.
sidewinder
Really? I think 'Total Eclipse'is very fine but I'd personally put 'Happenings' and 'Oblique' ahead of it in the lineup. Splitting hairs though - all of them great ! mikeweil
Yeah, they're all fine - but Total Eclipse has some special vibe - modern mysterious post-bop or whatever you may want to call it. Maybe it's pure nostalgia on my side - it was one of the first records I heard on AFN Europe when discovering jazz in the late 1960's ...
