Peter Friedman
I have seen both ways. Which is correct? Redd or Red. I checked a wide variety of albums where he is either leader or sideman. They all referred to him as Sonny Red. Perhaps you are thinking of the two d's in the female alto sax player Vi Redd?
John L
...Or Freddie Redd? On this subject, does anybody know the story of Mr. Persip. Charlie or Charli?

And note his billing here... This last being a true outlier, i.e., I've never seen him billed as Red Kyner anywhere else... Huh... sgcim
In the Roland Kirk bio Kruth lists it as Sonny Red Kyner. He tells the story of RRK sitting in with SRK and taking it over to the extent that Sonny got so mad, he packed up his alto and went home in the middle of the gig. RRK finished Sonny Red's gig! sonnymax
Of course, "Sonny Red(d)" is just a nickname. His given name was Sylvester Kyner. Anyone ever read Anders Svanoe's essay Bluesville: The Journey of Sonny Red published in Rutgers University's Annual Review of Jazz Studies, No.13? JSngry
And oh btw - his Mainstream album is one nobody ever talks about, and that's too bad. It's not really "great" or anything, but it is a worthy endeavor.

But nothing I've heard of his own comes up to the way he played with Donald Byrd. MG

JSngry
The correct answer is Sylvester Kyner. Everything else is a matter of interpretation.
