7/4 Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 The music is pretty good, if you like "contemporary classical" or whatever they call orchestral and string quartet music being written after 1950. (Actually I have to say that the BBC radio 3 seems light years ahead of anything in the US for sponsoring and playing loads of new compositions, and I tried to listen to most of these shows. And I see that the Chicago Symphony has a few world premiere pieces and I may go see those shows. So I guess I am doing my bit to support expanding the canon.) wkcr has some new music programing between 3-5 edst M-F, sometimes I tune in to check it out. Quote

Niko Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Charles Tolliver - Impact (Enja) Tina Brooks - True Blue (used copy of the 1994 conn, maybe not the best idea to buy that now, but an easy way to get a non copy-protected copy at 5,99) Grant Green - Talkin About (if you have a Wohlthat'sche Buchhandlung nearby it may be worth going there, as they have some of the Spanish TimeLife BlueNotes and of the 24Bit remastered Black Lion CDs at 2,99 each) Quote
JohnJ Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 In a little local store, among a bunch of Jpop dross, a used TOCJ of Baby Face Willette 'Face to Face' at the equivalent of a little over $3. Great CD. Quote
sal Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Well, I was on amazon.com to buy a road atlas of France, and I decided to have a little fun since I just got my 2006 year end bonus at work. Picked up a couple of OJCs I fear may not be around much longer: Carmell Jones - Jay Hawk Talk Harold Land - The Fox Mal Waldron - The Quest Art Pepper - Thursday at the Village Vanguard With these, the new RVGs and my recent Mosaic order, I think its time to slow down. king ubu Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I'm having more money than I ever had... got a bonus and a one-off gratification at the place where I work part-time besides studying, and so I took another plunge in the Universal/OJC sale (sale means 9€ per disc, but this time they made me pay for one less than what I picked) - Pres in D.C. Vols. 3-5 (missing Vol. 2) - Wynton Kelly "Full View" - Duke Latin "American Suite" - Lee Konitz Duets - Gil Evans & Ten - The Hawk Relaxes (RVG) - Poll Winners "Straight Ahead" - Jackie Mac "Makin' the Changes" & "McLean's Scene" - Lockjaw "Cookbook Vol. 1" (RVG) - Bruceck "Jazz at Oberlin", "Octet" & "Stardust" - Nat Adderley "Much Brass" - Montgomery Brothers "Groove Brothers" - Stitt/McDuff "Stitt Meets Brother Jack" Quote
Sundog Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 Finally ordered the Miles Complete Stockholm (Dragon) 4 cd set today. Got it for a good price on half.com ($35). FYI- Make sure that your set doesn't contain a duplicate of one of the discs (I believe #2) and missing one all together (#3?). Even though they may be labeled correctly be sure to check them out right away. There have been issues with some sets including my copy. Quote

Matthew Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 I blame Chaney for this, since he gave me a copy of the one disk introduction to this set about a year ago: Ictus Records' 30th Anniversary Collection Box Set. Quote

ejp626 Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 I picked up Shirley Scott's For Members Only/Great Scott for a fair price, as well as Willie Bobo's Spanish Grease/Uno Dos Tres (love that cover) and East Coast West Coast Scene with Shorty Rogers and Al Cohn (playing separately). I really wanted to get Sweets by Sweets Edison, but the price wasn't right, so I will order it a bit later. Quote
