Charles Mingus, Kenny Dorham, Freddie Hubbard for RSD 2025

Listening to this for the first time and started with tracks 6 and 7 because of recent comments in this thread. I'm fortunate to report that they play fine on my ancient CD/DVD unit currently in use.  Also happy to second the praise for Sonny Red, burning through "Bags' Groove" as I type.

I believe that these tapes were licensed to Resonance Records with the full cooperation of the Dorham and Hubbard Estates. 

He has other tapes but I'm not sure I can discuss that except that one could judge from these releases and the era they were recorded in that there are some other interesting things. These releases might be the cream of the crop though.....

He provided the tapes for John Coltrane's Olatunji Concert previously.

My Dorham CD was also defective with a large scratch on it and it wouldn't play the last two tracks.

Man that's crazy! I was seriously thinking about picking this up but based on the issues I think I'll pass.

This Dorham sounds so so much better than Olatunji!

Mine was also defective. I wrote to Resonance about it two days ago but have not received a reply.

The music is quite good. The booklet is largely sorta generic. The Bandcamp download gets you the former, flawlessly.

I gotta say I am leaning heavily toward the d/l FLAC thing. Burn a disc, save another, back up the files to a hard drive or two. I'll be good until I kick.

Enjoying the Hubbard more than I thought I would. This version of Breaking Point is, to me, a tad better than the one on Night of the Cookers; slower, more space. But Crisis is straight up fantastic. 

Getting to the Mingus and of course Dannie Richmond is on top of things as usual. Never disappoints.

I'm surprised that no one has discussed the Mingus.  I really like it.  the liner notes led me to expect the bass to be almost inaudible and the bass playing to be weak.  I didn't find either to be true.

The ensemble playing is really tight (though I may prefer  the looseness of the old Workshop recordings) and Danny Richmond is his usual kick ass self.

I'm holding back listening to this Mingus. . . to just have a thrill in reserve for when I need it (been a hard time for me lately, my dog passed two weeks ago, tomorrow is the third anniversary of my father's passing and I miss him more and more as time goes by, and then there's 102 days of chaos etc.) I'll take the cellophane off soon. I'm a Mingus nut--can't hold back forever. Thanks for the positive impressions.

I finally have gotten around to spinning this. I agree  . . . the sound is actually in my opinion very good, as are the performances. Really excited to have and hear this.

I had no issues with the Kenny Dorham disc. It played perfectly.

received my Dorham CD today & in my CD/SACD player the distortion on track 7 (& part of track 6) makes it unlistenable BUT the whole CD plays fine on my apple CD drive (computer). I also created a CDr (extracted AIFF files) from the defective disc & lo & behold it plays perfectly - what gives!!!! - it can't be the files then but a likely disc defect

I've had to do that - successfully - more times that I care to mention.

There's not necessarily a logical explanation.

You bet!! never experienced this before where a CDr created from a faulty CD plays clean - generally if there's an issue with the file you won't be able to extract it from the CD to create the CDr

And if it's a faulty disc itself, why can it be read for burning but not for playing?

A CD player plays discs in a single pass, correcting any errors "on the fly". If it can't correct it, playback is affected. Many disc drives in computers re-read bad sectors to try and correct errors that a CD can't. This is especially true when ripping CDs to create mp3/aff/flac files using a special program like Exact Audio Copy.

I've been ripping some mosaic sets with varying results in EAC. The Jones-Lewis set so far is not ripping completely while my oldest sets-Basie live and studio-ripped with no issues in "burst". I tried a trial of dbpower amp but it wouldn't read cds at all, returning error messages. School is still in with these tools.

I got my Dorham in today. Went straight to track 7 and my player (Emotiva ERC-3) stopped at 0:59 and then started skipping. I'll rip it and see how that sounds. There sure is a lot of tape noise on the the track 7 I heard though. Was expecting it a little cleaner.

 

Edit: Okay this is freaking bizarre. Track 7 on the CD sounds like ass but the rip sounds great. WTF is going on with this pressing?!?

I returned my CD to Amazon, got a replacement, returned that one, bought the dig download which was fine.  Meanwhile before I bought the download I wrote Resonance and asked for a copy of the download.  Three weeks later they finally responded and  sent me the link for the download files.  Wish I had waited.  Cost me $10.

That’s pretty disappointing but not unexpected. Sounds like they know the issue but don’t want to rectify it. Giving the download is the most cost effective remedy.
