Hardbopjazz Posted yesterday at 05:11 PM Report Posted yesterday at 05:11 PM (edited) Ray Drummond has passed away today. Rest in peace and thanks for the music. Edited yesterday at 05:24 PM by Hardbopjazz Quote
mikeweil Posted yesterday at 05:19 PM Report Posted yesterday at 05:19 PM I know Ray Drummond the bass player, born in 1946. There is a drummer Billy Drummond (no relation) , born 1959. Now who is it, what is your source? Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted yesterday at 05:24 PM Author Report Posted yesterday at 05:24 PM (edited) Bassist. My mistake. It was reported by Spike Wilner the owner of Smalls Edited yesterday at 05:32 PM by Hardbopjazz Quote
mikeweil Posted yesterday at 06:35 PM Report Posted yesterday at 06:35 PM Okay - it's always good to state a source right away. R.I.P. - one of the most reliable bassists of his generation, big tone. I bet every member has a few albums with him participating on the shelves. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted yesterday at 09:09 PM Report Posted yesterday at 09:09 PM Sad News! He was a damn good bass player. I had the good fortune to see him play live quite a number of times. And as Mike said, I have him on numerous CDs including a few where he is the leader. Ray was also the co-leader on 4 or 5 trio CDs by The Drummonds with Billy Drummond and Renee Rosnes Quote
mjzee Posted 23 hours ago Report Posted 23 hours ago R.I.P. Very sad; great bassist. I met his father once, who was very proud of his son. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted 23 hours ago Report Posted 23 hours ago Although there doesn't appear to be any formal confirmation of this, he had been ill for quite a while, so it is not unexpected. I consider myself lucky to have seen so many Jazz greats - and Ray was one of them. He was a force on the bass. I've been meaning to pick up a few more of Ray's Arabesque CDs. I have "Vignettes" and it's really nice. I'll have to play that in his memory. Quote

Steve Reynolds Posted 21 hours ago Report Posted 21 hours ago Was blessed to him in Philadelphia maybe in 1998 or so with our friend Gordon B from the old Jazz Corner/Jazz Central Station in a quartet led by David Murray with the late John Hicks & Andrew Cyrille. RIP, sir Quote
Ken Dryden Posted 19 hours ago Report Posted 19 hours ago I got to hear Ray Drummond in piano duos twice, with Billy Mays in 1990 in New Orleans and with Kenny Barron at Zinno in 1997. He was also a part of the jam sessions during the IAJE 2004 with James Williams and Ben Riley, I heard them backing Francesco Cafiso. He was also a delightful interview. RIP, Ray. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted 6 hours ago Report Posted 6 hours ago Too bad. Amazing sound on the instrument. Quote
