  2. Because Greg is somewhat "local" to my area, I get to see him quite often. He's actually playing at Arthur's House Of Jazz in Methuen, MA on April 9th. Every time I catch him live, he plays great.
  3. As far as I know Peter never made it back to the United States since before the pandemic. I was lucky to see his last show stateside in June 2019 / a short but nice duo with Andrew Cyrille.
  4. Today
  5. 👍 You have described Greg Abate's playing very well, Peter. I would like to hear Greg Abate in person. I really enjoy the seven Abate recordings I own (including 2 with Phil Woods and one with Alan Barnes). Here is one of my favorites.

  7. Thanks Niko I’ve never seen that before. Interesting!
  8. I like that one a lot, the short movie is worth watching, too
  9. rene mclean lived in Africa
  10. On the basis of making records with Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden, Ginger is OK in my book.
  11. I guess it depends if you count Ginger Baker as a jazz-rock drummer, but he collaborated with Fela Kuti both in Africa and Europe. https://www.openculture.com/2020/06/when-afrobeat-legend-fela-kuti-collaborated-with-cream-drummer-ginger-baker.html
  12. Not really in the spirit of this thread but I noticed a copy of this unlikely LP browsing in Rays Jazz this afternoon - 'Bud Shank in Africa' from 1958. https://electricjive.blogspot.com/2010/11/bud-shank-in-africa-1958.html Released by Pacific Jazz in South Africa only and reissued a few years later in the UK as simply 'Bud Shank Quartet'. It doesn't appear to have ever had a US release.
  13. I owned a pair of the entry level Magnepans quite awhile ago. Agree that they sound great. However, the sweet spot, where imaging was outstanding, was quite small. I don’t know if that would hold for larger or more current models.
  14. Being goofy is essential!
  15. Yusef Lateef taught in Nigeria in the early 80s, resulting in two albums' worth of material. Barney Wilen documented and made field recordings while traveling in north central Africa in 1969-70, also resulting in two albums of material. Lester Bowie lived in Nigeria with Fela Kuti and performed in Fela's band. Sun Ra and his band were at FESTAC 1977 (Lagos) and also performed in Egypt. Max Roach was at FESTAC too, I believe. Archie Shepp and his band were at the Pan-African Cultural Festival in 1969, and I know that was very important for him, Burrell, Moncur, Thornton, Silva, and Murray.
  16. Love the Walton/Jones/Higgins rhythm section on "House on Maple Street" from this. One of my earliest jazz albums, got the Cobblestone LP out of a cutout bin.
  17. Caught Christian McBride and Usra Major last night. Was okay. Not great. Nicole Glover was interesting. Not what I expected.
