  1. Past hour
  2. I hesitated over this set for a long time because I had a lot of it on individual releases and the set ran a bit expensive used. Recently I came across a copy for quite a reasonable price and it arrived yesterday. I did not realize that this set had so much more material than some of the original releases! Very nice sound on the Malcolm Addey mastering, too.
  3. YES to all three!
  4. Today
  5. With Cal Collins and George Mraz
  6. I discovered the "roller-rink" organist trope via Bob Blumenfeld's updated (2004) liner notes to the RVG CD of Heavy Soul. Freddie Roach (1931-1980), with a more subdued (detractors might say roller-rink) sound than most organists of the period, might be an acquired taste, but for this listener it is a taste worth acquiring...
  7. October 28 Glen Moore - 1941
  8. He was among the greatest. RIP
  9. He volunteered his availability! And there it is
  10. This isn’t the first time I hear people having trouble with the sound of an organ. There’s a community of flute haters too. Of course it’s all just personal taste. Though I still prefer piano I really grew into the sound of it. I mostly found out I dislike a specific sound which is a technical thing I find hard to describe but let’s say it’s the more dull side of the instrument. There’s also a more biting and funky side I really enjoy. There’s also way Jimmy Smith plays on Root Down for example: damn! Also have a couple of John Patton and Larry Young records I really enjoy.
  11. What a highly unpleasant person he was. Stellar record though, probably my favorite Getz. The combination with Chick works like magic. Captain Marvel is great as well though it’s not so consistently good as Sweet Rain.
  12. I always had the same thoughts: Washington DC, Sweden, UK, Toronto, Southern California… why not merging all of them in one international EKE society? Nowadays, communications across different states/countries/continents are easy… In any case, I perfectly understand the reasons behind this proposed decision at the DESS AGM… Sad but true…
  13. For sure
  14. OK - thanks! There are some videos on YouTube, too.
  15. Got it when I was 16 or so, a cutout. Only kinda got it then, time took care of that. Interesting now to hear the title track alongside some of Chick's SS material with Maupin sound like the goings on of the Lost Quintet - which at the time unless you had heard them live you HADN'T heard them! You HAVEN'T? Seriously don't that that was the intent, but history makes it's own jokes sometimes.
  16. I like that one a lot (which I'm sure is shocking, ha). If you haven't already, you might also check out "Playing in a Room with People", which is a Jansen Barbieri Karn live release, also featuring Steven Wilson, and also Theo Travis.
  17. Incredible drummer. Hard to imagine Miles’s music evolving from “Directions” to On the Corner without his presence, and his appearances on ECM as a sideman/leader were usually of extremely high quality. Strong agreement on Special Edition and Album Album being the best of that band’s work, though all 4 of the ECMs are worth hearing.
  18. Definitely was for me. I need to pull that one out and re-listen, it's been a long time. Looong album sides on that one, 29+ minutes each.
  19. Fond memories of Charles.
  20. Love that one. Have the Japanese LP pressing with that cover as well. Probably the first place I (and most people outside of Japan) heard Hideo Ichikawa.
  21. Special Edition and Album Album, in particular, are excellent records.
