Oh they were in Viena also. But I missed it. Seems to be similar to the 3-Vinyl set "The Great Concert of Charles Mingus" that I bought as a teenager. It was my first Mingus record and anyway my second jazz record. Made me decide to become a musician. A step I never regretted. This group was great. I have another record, from later, but it has only Cliff Jordan, Danny Richmond. Dolphy left, Byard left and one Jane Getz is on piano. So it´s only quartet but they really cook, same tunes "Fables" and "Meditations""!

Well I can´t trace it, I bought that CBS double album when I was 18 and was thrilled by the liner notes. But that´s not my point. I am strictly music, and must say, I learned a lot from that record, how to play fast tempos. How to get near to Bud Powells solos on Little Willie Leaps and Dizzy Atmoshpere, to learn how to phrase, to have control over the keyboard. Well now I don´t play that kind of music for money, I have to look on what sounds is now, but just for fun, once in a while a straight bop session is nice if you do it in a hip manner for the younger audience. The only thing I can say, who ever it was, if it was one Chubby Newsome or Jimmy Scott it sounds horrible, and I like only the instrumental solos. Anyway I think even the critic said, that Bird and Fats "rescued" the tune. yeah, it sounds ugly

I have been listening to "Falling In Love Is Wonderful" by Jimmy Scott. I find his singing really terrific. And the song selection is first rate. My one caveat is the orchestral background. It is ok, but to my taste, a jazz group providing support with a few tasty jazz solos would have raised the session up a notch or two. If I recall correctly, Jimmy Scott's earlier album - "All The Way" had some nice solos by David "Fathead" Newman, which added just that special jazz flavor that was a big plus.

I was sent the LP version of this release. I've owned this CD for decades: "Epistrophy" may have been edited prior to its original broadcast.

We just received a promo of this, the first official release from the Monk estate. Be forewarned that (1) there are no notes outside of a brief Q and A with T.S. Monk on the inner sleeve (2) "Epistrophy," a 9:45 performance, is badly truncated and runs about a minute and a half (3) it's a CD-R. Hopefully volume 2 comes out better. I'm sure some board members have previous unofficial versions of this concert.. might wanna keep 'em for the time being.

AFAICT (consulting discogs), of the 12 albums pictured on the Mosaic page, only Fiorello has not appeared on CD. Although many of the various CD releases were Japanese.

I think that a qualifying line is missing, i.e. that the cds listed contain material that was not out on the original LPS. I think only 3 of the LPs listed have themselves not been out on cd, maybe only 2.

You were not far off the mark. Just listened to that Jazzpickers LP. The intro gives it away - and so do the liner notes. Quote: "Evening in Azerbaijan, a Latin-tinged theme in the minor mode, might have been called 'The Day after the Night in Tunisia' ...". Nuff said? That would have been a post for the "Night In Tunisia" thread too.

I am most intrigued by the expansion of "old stand by" sets with mostly guaranteed audiences to now include a Verve recording artist. (well, for most of these anyway). Seems like the same effort to keep the lights on with a set with a strong likelihood of sales at this point in time. Not that i don't support Mosaic doing what is necessary to keep the lights on.

That's why I'm confused. I'm extremely interested (and will need to dig through the discography more) but my instinct was that more of this has been out on CD... I mean his estate is the main body (his daughter) who's putting out unreleased stuff and all of that is live, previously unreleased material. I guess I find it hard to think that's there's a lot of studio stuff that hasn't been out before... (Is what I'm saying making sense?)

I know some on the Board are not big fans of O.P., but I enjoy his playing and always liked this trio. Like Lon, I've ordered every Mosaic for a long time (even the Pharaoh Sanders, though that took some thinking), and I also don't have all these, so I'm looking forward to it.
