  2. I read this a while back, so good. A good antidote to “bebop brain”.
  3. Well, tastes do differ. Maybe the explanation about where you were "wrong" is that my fave styles (yes, there is that word again! ) are Swing, Bebop and Cool/Westcoast Jazz. I don't dig quite as deeply into Traditional (pre-Swing) jazz and Hard Bop but think I have covered the bases there too. (And am still catching up with Soul Jazz.) So as this might show you, to me it's rather the 1st quintet that definitely is mainstream. BTW, considering how everyone who probably qualifies as being "seriously into jazz" drools about KOB no end wherever you look, read or listen, I'll admit that actually I held out a LONG time before buying a copy (figuring I'd be able to get one at ANY moment if I ever took the plunge). About 8 or 9 years ago I finally gave in. And you know what? To me it sounded very, very accessible and digestible. Not nearly as challenging as many made it out to be. FWIW, there is quite a bit of 50s Lennie Tristano that for me even borders on "jazz easy listening", considering how easy I find it to absorb. (Whereas there is a fair share of 50s Jimmy Giuffre that I find more challenging.) So all this might tell you why the 2nd quintet is a bit off my listening coordinates.
  4. Yeah, I was quasi-excited for these. Could play them when people came over but even though they look like they're in good condition, the noise is pretty bad. I'm going to unload them most likely. I'll prob keep the MJ records though. Off the Wall and Thriller are good even with the noise.
  5. The notes were interesting to read. I added them to my "online" collection - making them easy to read for those interested: https://storage.googleapis.com/cloudplayer/album.html#1779123281558
  6. I was once given a huge collection of records. An older couple who knew my mother-in-law, heard her stories of my huge record collection and asked if I might want their son's records. I said sure. Their son was a big record buyer. Tons of classic rock artists like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd & The Beatles. Every single one of them had a cover that looked like it had been run over by a steam roller a few times and the records looked like they were played to within an inch of their life on what I'm guessing was a less than ideal turntable. Some of them were almost white with wear. Even worse was the fact that he threw out all the inner sleeves. Ouch. I tried playing a few of them and they just weren't worth keeping. I brought almost the whole bunch to the dump a few days later. I think I kept about 10 out of close to 400 records.
  7. “Garcia Plays Dylan” disc 1
  8. Thanks! Thanks as well - had missed that listing searching for the album. I used to find a lot of albums on the Internet Archive and lately it seems that I have had less luck - perhaps they removed some items?
  9. A cool and rainy morning. Repeating a litsten to this one as it really makes the system shine this morning, and I really wanted to hear this music again. A fascinating album with excellent engineering. Randy Weston “Khepera” Verve cd On to Miles Davis "Milestones" Mobile Fidelity Lab stereo SACD

  11. OMG I think this calls for me to recall my ambassador and break off diplomatic relations with you! Just kidding. Every person their own music critic is my motto. Like what you like. It just struck me as odd because although the 2nd quintet may seem a bit recondite for your average pop listener, I've always imagined this would be pretty mainstream stuff for people who are seriously into jazz. Obviously I imagined wrong!
  12. You don't call it noodling. 👍

  16. It's not that I "don't like" it in the stricter sense of the word. If someone else would play it in my presence I'd not run away in horror. It's just not nearly near the top of my list of "active" preferences, style-wise overall. And since there is SO MUCH (other) music to listen to and to explore as well you just naturally make choices in your "go-to" recordings. If this labels me as a "moldy fig in modern jazz", then so be it.

  18. As Big Beat Steve noted just because you don’t like a style or type of music or whatever you’d like to call it doesn’t appeal to you doesn’t mean it’s not great music.
