Hi everyone, My name is Zakk Jones. I’m a professional jazz guitarist and educator based in Ohio, and I’ve been doing an extensive research project on the life and music of Ed Bickert. A big part of my work is a deep dive into his playing, recordings, and influence—some of which I share on my YouTube channel “Beyond The Frets,” where I’ve posted detailed analyses, transcriptions, and breakdown videos focused specifically on Ed. As part of this project, I’ve conducted many interviews with some of Ed’s closest collaborators and colleagues, but I’m always looking to speak with more people who knew him, worked with him, or heard him regularly. I’m very happy to receive recommendations or introductions to others I should talk to. I’m currently looking to connect with anyone who has personal anecdotes or memories of Ed (on or off the bandstand), photographs, rare or private recordings, radio/TV captures, video, gig posters, or any other related ephemera from across his career. Here in Europe its night now. 03:40, normal time for me. Played a gig, great gig, people love what they hear and see, and you drive back home. Got my headphones now since my sweethearts became tired and needs some sleep. Have this great thing blastering in my weak ears, and you really FEEL IT. I Mean it feels so great and they all so great. This might be „simple stuff” but there is tons to „learn” from it, even for advanced musicians like me. I think I saw Blakey sittin down at a piano somewhere and he also sang ”For All We Know”. Sure, I have the greatest singer in my band I can imagine, just a dream that girl, but you also love stuff like that, no ?

Just discovered that Smokin' was reissued in the U.S. in 1985 on Roulette. Weird. Right here. Anyone here happen to have this compact disc edition?? Oh—the newly reissued LP set (above) has dropped in price. It's now around $120 on eBay.

Yep, 25+ years ago I bought the majority of the Muse catalog that I wanted for ~$5 per record. Catalyst, Buster Williams, and Vic Juris Horizon Drive were the only ones sold at a premium because of hip hop samples. I also got an original copy Sun Ra's Lanquidity for $20 so it was a different time.
