It was about 20 years ago when I was at a weekend jazz event in California.Rein De Graaf was attending the event as a listener, but not scheduled to perform. My good friend (the late) George Ziskind ,a fine jazz pianist ,located a room with a piano and wanted to play a bit just to keep his chops in shape. As he began to play in this mostly empty room, Rein De Graaff walked in and asked if he could also play. So for about one hour George and Rein alternated at the piano, each playing 2 tunes each time around. It was a reat treat for me to have the opportunity to hear two very good jazz pianists. They both enjoyed it so much, that they agreed to do it again the next morning. So this was a second morning that I had a wonderful listening experience. Rein De Graaf is very much a BEBOP oriented musician. He played many tunes those 2 morning out of the "bebop" playbook. Tunes by Bird, Monk, Tadd and others.

Yep, nice reissue, 1976 ABC jazz library serie. I need to check that record, new to me.

Not sure how this relates ... finally got my copy (released 23 July 2025): They get the year right this time ... the only fault is that it's on the short side (29 minutes). Poindexter also sings a bit (on all tracks except "So Danço Samba" - full lyrics on #1 and #2, just a bit at the end of #3), which the credits fail to mention; Hammer is on organ on #1/2, and on piano on #3/#4. Going from Mike's discography, all but "Moanin'" seem to be new additions repertoire-wise? Disc 2: Dreams and Roba part 1. So happy to have obtained this set. Challenging but very interesting music.

Listening to one of the first LPs I’ve ever owned, given to me by a Peace Corps volunteer my father directed in Swaziland (now Eswatini) unwanted from a care package they all received from Atlantic Records in 1969. It still plays and sounds wonderful! Leo Wright “Blues Shout” Atlantic mono LP

Egad. Never thought of Rufus. Benton is one of those weird guys I don't know much by, but I know him when I hear him (think Tate Houston). I had his record Out Of This World when I was a kid (may still have that on vinyl, actually).
