RIP. Papa Joe, Buddy, Klook, Roy, Art B, Art T, Max, Sherry, Philly Joe, Elvin, Tony, Billy, Paul, and now Jack... each had their own distinct personality, and you could tell who it was just by hearing them play. They're all gone now. Am I the only one who thinks drums have become so bland lately? I also quite like Jack as a modal pianist.

I was a season ticket holder with the Boston Celtics for close to a decade and in the old Boston Garden, they most definitely had a "basketball organist".

Alan Dawson & Richard Davis were locked and loaded for quite a few years with Booker Ervin for his "books".

Ballpark organ used to be very much a thing! In Dallas anyway, so was cafeteria organ. Luby's! Miss Inez (also a ballpark organist!) was those longest lived, but Ted Cassidy (yes, Lurch!) also had the gig for a while

Well done Organissimo Forums. All tracks identified. #6 had me from the beginning of the first time I heard it. One of those tracks that wraps you in a sound world from the start - others that do that for me are Soft and Furry by Johnny Griffin, Africa by John Coltrane, and McCoy Tyner's intro to Coltrane's Body and Soul. Escoffery's solo keeps the mood going for me. If I couldn't tolerate showy playing I'd have to give up Art Tatum and James Carter - and to that I say - no way! And Joe Locke sneaks into my top 5 on the instrument, although I wouldn't expect everyone to agree.

I have Spanier's studio big band recordings (there weren't not many) on a Decca Ace of Hearts LP, and I have an LP's worth of airshots of his big band (all that were ever discovered, at least as of the vinyl era) that was released on Jazz Archives (JA-30).
