I know both Neil and Mark and just had "the shivers"!

My introduction to this material was an early '60s compilation called "Dizzy, Rollins & Stitt". It had a fantastic color photo on the cover of the 3 named artists. The tunes were Eternal Trinagle, After Hours, Wheatleigh Hall & Con Alma. As soon as possible, I bought the 2 individual lps. All 3 are at the top of their games on these 2 dates. Some of the material could be more interesting but DAMN! FWIW, I much prefer the original mono sound - the stereo tapes seem to lose the "balls" of the monos.

This might be the proper time to grow up Allen. This is a MAJOR release and I have been waiting about 40 years for something like this. The Rounder folks seem to have done it right.

I first encountered him on the Conte Candoli lp "Little Band Big Jazz" at the beginning of the '60s. I had some phone conversations with Mr. Collette while working on the Uptown Mingus project. He is a very bright, articulate, thoughtful man. I have nothing but warm thoughts about him. The audio bio/interview is wonderful. Thanks Buddy.

I just want to say in the (many, many years) past I did business and trades with Shrugs with nothing but fine outcomes. If something has gone wrong in his life, I (if no one else) owe him a good word.

Yes, the broadcast with Sal is floating around. Never heard of the Atlas disc either and I thought I had all of them at one time or another. I doubt the Midget survived the trip to California. Concerning the guitar, I think he played it in private to explore chords - cheaper and more mobile than a piano.

In JR's "Iowa chapter" we were good friends. He'd pick me up in the morning in his red MG Midget and we'd go to the Airliner Lounge and drink 2 bloody marys then retire to his car parked across the street from the campus. He would watch the females and sip on his bottle of cough syrup. Maybe more later, but Ann just announced dinner.
