  1. I really don't understand why OP gets so much hate from some people... I don't get. I love his music.
  2. Thanks. I suspected someone brought this up but I couldn't find it when I searched.
  3. Is there a good list of Black jazz musicians who left the US for a long time and where they moved to? I've been intrigued by this since I learned about Don Byas. I think I know some of the more obvious, like Nina Simone and (I think) Dexter Gordon. I also listened to the radio and an Alvin Queen tune came up. I didn't know much about him (other than his new release on Cellar ) but the DJ said he moved to Switzerland (I think). I'm curious if anyone has generated a list. Thanks.
  4. Is it fair to say when listening to the Mosaic samples of the Byas, he does sound similar (at first listen) to Coleman Hawkins? I don't have any Byas and from what I read, there was a relationship between the two. But this will sound like a stupid question but how different do they actually sound (Byas and Hawkins)?
  5. Sounds like you're saying the Byas set is a better/more important/ buy than the Vanguard. Is that right? My sole hesitation is how I felt with the Chu Berry set. Rare, had to get it, only listened to it once.
  6. So several months later... What do you think? Was it a good purchase? I'm in the same boat and trying to choose between that one and the Classic Vanguard box coming out.
  7. Wait so now I'm really confused. We've got the Classic Vanguard Small Group Sessions (just coming out), a second set focused on piano settings. And then a third on big-band Vanguard recordings? Do I have that right? All from the Vanguard label?
  8. The only time I got to see him live was after his stroke. Yes, you are correct.
  9. I just listened to the sound clips and read the discography. Based on the personnel I am a little tepid but I'll probably get it. Sound clips are excellent though.
  10. There's also a 3 set bootleg from a performance in Ottawa that I hope they can find a way to publish formally...
  11. The disappointing thing is that the music's got to be out there. Wynton's JALC label came out with one of her unreleased live concerts three or four years ago. It was really good. I'm glad I'm not the only one wanting this.
  12. I'm still waiting for my 5cd Live Unreleased Betty Carter set... I can't believe people forgot how important she was. For me, there are five female jazz singers I have to listen to... Billie, Anita O'Day, Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter. I've got the Anita set. I assume all the Billie material has been released. Abbey Lincoln had a small box set years ago on another label. That just leaves Shirley and Betty. Given how many instrumentalists praise her, I don't know why there isn't a greater recognition of her. If Mosaic can find some Lennie Tristano stuff, why not Betty?
  13. I thought I read somewhere (Instagram?) from a fellow musician that he had gotten dementia. Can anyone else confirm that?
  14. I was so lucky to see him, here in Boston. Today's Boston Globe has a good obit on him. I agree with the many good things said. When I saw him he was probably in his 70s and still dressed better than most of us. https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/11/12/metro/roy-haynes-sublime-inventive-jazz-drummer-dies-99/
  15. I wasn't planning on getting this but I listened to it on Apple Music and was so impressed. I'm not a big fan of duets but they pulled this one off IMHO. https://daveholland.bandcamp.com/album/united
  16. Just got my copy today. I'm looking forward to listening to it but I wish the packaging/presentation was better. The case seems quite flimsy. We're a long way away from the Seven Steps box... But... first world problems.
  17. Okay, I have a question for the historians here or those who purchased the set. Who was Timme Rosenkrantz and why were so many of these sessions recorded at "his/her apartment?" I don't think I've ever seen that in a Mosaic set before, especially so many sessions. Okay, I read the Wikipedia entry. Was he the equivalent of Monk's Baroness Pannonica or more a Norman Granz or somewhere in between?
  18. You are 1000%. It has gotten SO much better than years ago. I've got mine in the listening queue so hopefully, all of it will be online before I get to it.
  19. Here's the official press release. This is a great trio. Looking forward to this one. https://storyvillerecords.com/product/jazz-club-montmartre-cph-1988/
  20. I just got mine yesterday. Set 994. I'm impressed and happy if Mosaic has sold 1000 sets so quickly. I know we've talked about sets not necessarily going out in the number they are ordered, but if in fact, they've sold 1000 sets that's very good news.
  21. I can't find a lot of info but I'm totally invested. https://www.jazzmusicarchives.com/album/michel-petrucciani/michel-petrucciani-trio-jazz-club-montmartre-cph-1988(live)
  22. Sarah Hanahan - Among Giants... It's quite good.
  23. I'll be more blunt... That's garbage. A) I don't want vinyl B) I don't want other artists playing Lee Morgan (in previously released stuff anyway) only to get C) an unreleased live set from Lee. Personally I love Lee (I have almost everything) and I hope this set bombs. I really hate this Blue Note series/sh*t.
  24. I generally agree but one of the things that impressed me was the sound quality. I'm partial to these V-Discs because of the Nat Cole ones I've heard so I decided to grab this set. I'm also partial to get the other V-Disc sets when they come out.
  25. I got the same thing. Wondering about the tracking email though....
