  1. oh no!! loved his stint with FZ will miss you
  2. There's a copy of that picture in the Mingus Candid Mosaic booklet
  3. Chapters on Max can be found in Kenny Mathieson's "Giant Steps - Bebop & The Creators Of Modern Jazz 1945-65" (1999) Ira Gilter's "Jazz Masters Of The 40's" (1966)
  4. Check this amazing glass making documentary "Glas" by Bert Haanstra that won an Oscar in 1959 (best documentary - short subject) The soundtrack involved the Pim Jacobs Quintet & avant electronic music. http://kottke.org/13/07/glas I was intrigued watching their hands & mouths - much like playing instruments The prominence of the clarinet is entirely appropriate here
  5. Anyone in Australia happen to watch the recent Chris Masters (investigative journalist) series "The Years That Made Us - Australia Between The Wars" on the ABC (aired late June & July - 3 parts). The first episode covering up to 1929 included a segment dedicated to Sonny Clay's visit here, his band (including Ivie Anderson) & their subsequent expulsion/deportation from Australia (photos & interesting re-enactment). Couldn't believe my eyes when this appeared on the screen but apparently this was big news here at the time.
  6. RIP RR - will spin your CD with the messengers
  7. His Candid release "Tubby's New Groove" is a stunner made during the same sessions that resulted in his classic "Tubby's Groove" It's taken from original tapes (that were sent to Alfred Lion for a potential Blue Note release) & not a needle drop as is most of the Tempo CD releases (master tapes destroyed) my copy is too
  8. thanks for the info may have to look for a vinyl copy now
  9. Excellent. Someone else who has attained enlightenment. I don't think I've attained enlightenment; I like piano trios though, and 3 Sounds is a good one. But so are those of Wynton Kelly Red Garland Junior Mance Phineas Newborn McCoy Tyner Ray Bryant Les McCann Sonny Clark Ahmad Jamal King Fleming Ramsey Lewis Horace Parlan John Wright Bobby Timmons Norman Simmons Hampton Hawes And they ain't AT ALL the same old thing; not a one of them. MG How could you forget to mention Bill Evans? & Elmo Hope & Herbie Nichols
  10. I've noticed that the original Verve LP (great cover) contains a Giuffre title "Used To Be" that has not been released on CD Instead, the ECM (twofer Fusion/Thesis) CD release contains an unreleased title "Afternoon" - I'm wondering if they are the same title though timings are different (nothing in CD liner notes) Anyone out there with a copy of the vinyl or know why this has been omitted? I'm surprised these two classic Verve's (Fusion & Thesis) havn't had more CD exposure (maybe Japan) Big fan of JG here esp this period - also Vandermark's Free Fall groups paying homage to this period
  11. same here - how can you resist the gorgeous packaging & stunning remastering (lots of superlatives here) While we are discussing Clare Fischer - I'm currently listening to another of his Big Band (& sextet) efforts a la mambo i.e. "Manteca!" - just been released as a TOCJ
  12. Those are the same titles as the French Vogue 10" release (7 titles in all - the UK releases tended to mirror their French counterparts) - what I need are the 6 US titles (Lee In Paree, Ballad For Ruth, You'd Be so Nice To Come Home To, I'll Remember April, These Things & Josh B'Gosh) Thanks so far!!
  13. I'm currently trying to sort out the Lee Konitz Paris session (Sept 17, 1953) that yielded the Vogue 10" (LD 169 - 7 titles) "Lee Konitz Plays" & the Roost 10" (RLP 416 - 6 titles) "Originalee Konitz" What makes things confusing is that both French & US releases were similar but the title names were changed the session resulted in 14 titles, 11 of which have been released on CD I'll Remember April (5 versions) You'd be so Nice To come Home To (4 versions - only 1 version released on CD) All The Things You Are (3 versions) These Foolish Things (2 versions) The Lord Discography has attempted to address this but there appear to be a few errors present (eg the roost LP is listed as having 7 titles) What I need is a burn of an original Roost 10" LP - anyone out there have a copy they would like to digitalise for me? so I can compare those tracks to the ones I have (3 versions of this session ie the recent 25CD Vogue box , the late 90's black digipak & the 95 BMG Konitz/Brookmeyer in Paris) It will be for a good cause ie - updating/correcting the Lord Discography
  14. Just picked up "Tubby's New Groove" on Candid Simon Spillett's notes are fascinating (his liner notes are always illuminating & jam packed with info) - will definitely get the book This session(s) comes from the classic Tempo "Tubby's Groove" sessions In the late 50's, tapes from Tempo were sent to Alfred Lion with the possibility of a Hayes Blue Note release (as with Dizzy Reece) This never eventuated (Reece didn't sell well). These tapes were in Michael Cuscuna's possessionafter much searching & have been transferred to disc. So, these are much better quality recordings of Tempo material (most of what we currently have are transfers from LP as all the original tapes were destroyed in the 60/70's) & probably his best session/s Any Hayes fan should have this recording.
  15. Anybody else into this thoroughly enjoyable series of CDs produced by Honest Jon's in the UK It covers UK Calypso (& jazz) recorded in the early to late 50's on the Melodisc, Lyragon & other labels (primarily 78's & 45's) The booklets are filled with information but a little light on discographical details Vols 5 & 6 were recently issued & contain 3 Buddy Pipp's Highlifers titles (Lyragon 78's) with Joe Harriott making all 4 titles (Ackee Blues was released on Killer Joe & the Proper Box) finally available on CD Does anyone know what label the other two Buddy Pipp titles (Cuban Nightingale & Prospero) were released on & who played on them Did Harry Beckett play on some of the West African Rhythm Brothers releases??
  16. oops!! - did a quick check before I posted but apparently didn't look in the right section
  17. Another in the reissue - had my eye on this Is this a compilation or Thiele's Big Band "Emergency" I think Bradford, Carter & Tapscott play on this (one title? - In The vineyard) Worth getting?
  18. received this email from Eremite records yesterday - lots of choice vinyl (even Kaoru Abe!!) noted historical producer, dj, collector & friend of eremite records dante carfagna has put his entire free jazz collection up for auction on ebay & asked eremite to spread the word. Strong, focused list of nearly 300 American, European, and Japanese free jazz LPs. Key titles by Milford Graves, Khan Jamal, Noah Howard, Don Cherry, and Masayuki Takayanagi among others, in addition to many US private press rarities, clean ESP-Disks, and a litany of obscure titles from around the world. Nearly all are extremely clean, have been stored carefully for close to twenty years, and have been closely graded with multiple photos. These come from the private library of a longtime collector in the Chicago area. http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_ipg=200&item=321148088751&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&_ssn=mourning_warbler&_sop=1 bright summer regards, eremite records
  19. James Accardi has just sent me a message - more pics of WG Hi! Some new photos: http://wardellgray.o...ogalleryp5.html http://wardellgray.o...ogalleryp2.html There's a real nice shot of Gray with Basie's band at the Roost. And check out what is likely the earliest available photo of Wardell, just hanging out with Jeanne Goings. James
  20. Here's my 2c worth the liner notes (have a photocopy) to the MGM LP (3157) state that on "If I Had You" we have Mangelsdorff (tb), Koller (ts), Hipp (p), Roeder (b), Sanner (dm) - a different lineup from the rest of the LP (except for "Brotherly") This title may have been from a Koller led session as these same 5 musicians recorded a few sessions over May/June 53 The Koller New Jazz All Stars Vogue session (10" LD 144) of May/June 53 has an unreleased version of "If I Had You" (Lord Discography) There are 4 unreleased titles listed in the Lord Disco (K3496-13) "If I Had You", "Fine & Dandy", "Hi Beck" & "Lonesome Rd" It looks like the recently released Jazzhaus CD has three titles from this session i.e. "What's New", "These Foolish Things", & "Lonesome Rd" I've listened to both versions of "What's New" (Vogue Digipak & Jazzhaus CDs) & they sound identical with same timings "Lonesome Rd" tees up but "These Foolish Things" is not mentioned I'm wondering if the unreleased version of "If I Had You" is the same as the MGM LP version - It's the same musician lineup "Brotherly" is another tricky one The liner notes to 3157 state that the principal musicians on this title are Emil & Albert Mangelsdorff The Lord Disco does not list any sessions including Emil, Albert & Jutta (none on the Jazzhaus CD either), "Brotherly" is not even on the Lord database - maybe a different title? This one is a mystery

    Norman Howard

some words on NORMAN HOWARD by roy morris i first heard about Albert Ayler in 1964 and bought Spirits on Debut 146 later that year. this danish lp was sold by Collet's, the communist book- store in London. i loveed the music and was thrilled by Albert's highly original trumpeter, Norman Howard. around 1980, i read that George Coppens of Osmosis Records had been in New York and discovered an unreleased session by Norman. but when i contacted him, George had shelved his idea of releasing the music, believing Norman's playing to be inept. i had a cassette copy which i listened to frequently. in 1968 i was in a position to buy the master tape. i produced 100 cassette copies and sold it as SIGNALS on Homeboy music 1. the music was greated with ecstatic reviews and great enthusiasm from those who bought it. With the proceeds i purchased 2 more unmastered tapes i discovered Mr. Coppens owned. these were massive 1/2" reels whose boxes bore Bernard Stollman's writing and had clearly once "belonged" to ESP-DISK. i added this music to Signals and put it out as side b of Homeboy music 2 cassette entitled BURN, BABY, BURN in 1993. this time the plan was to distribute it via William Parker's Stork Music set-up. Unfortunately this went out of business, so i ended up giving the remaining copies to musicians i thought might be interested. this was hardly a commercial enterprise, but i was contacted by Henry Rollins (ex. Black Flag) who thought the music was great, and wanted to release it with "significant publicity" on his own 2.13.61 label. i happily sold him the masters in 1997. since then, there has been only resounding silence. i was never able to contact Mr. Howard or find out what became of him. no-one in Cleveland seemed to know. Joe Phillips converted to Islam, becoming Yusef Mumin, and moved to Milwaukee. Norman also became a Muslim in the early 80's, and may have followed Yusef there. incidentally, Sunny Murray, recalling the Spirits session, remembered Norman playing his own compositions, including Witches And Devils, for two hours before demonstrating the music on Sunny's drums and then switching to alto saxophone! if any-one would like to hear Norman's music, send whatever you like to me at 5 hill road, arbroath, angus dd11 1bx, scotland, uk and i will be happy to make you a cassette copy of Burn, Baby, Burn. maybe we can make something happen. this music deserves to be heard. I have a "cassette only" release on Homeboy Music, Fife, Scotland. The cassette was issued in 1989. The title is "Signals". Norman Howard - trumpet Joe Phillips - alto Walter Cliff - bass Corney Millsap - drums "All songs composed by Norman Howard and recorded November 1968 in Cleveland Ohio." Side 1 Soul Brother Genius Burn, Baby, Burn Haunted Side 2 Bug Out Deep Black Mystery Soul Resurrection Revisiting this thread as I've just obtained MP3's of the Homeboy releases (cassette 01 & 02) - 12 titles in all The above cassette (01 - Signals) is a copy of the first "mastered" tape obtained by Roy Morris -> was this the proposed "unreleased" ESP 1073 (or was it going to be a mixture from both sessions as the 2007 CD) It appears that the 2007 ESP CD release is a mixture of both sessions (the mastered tape plus the further two unmastered ones -> comprising the second cassette, Burn Baby Burn - 02; this also contained the contents of cassette 01) Maybe Clifford could shed some light on this Norman Howard [H8465-13] Signals: Norman Howard (tp) Joe Phillips (as) [aka Yusef Mumin (as) ] Walter Cliff (b) Corney Millsap (d) Cleveland, Ohio, November, 1968 Soul brother genius Homeboy Music (Scot)1 [Cass], 2 [Cass] Burn, baby, burn - - Haunted - - Bug out - - Deep black mystery - - Soul resurrection - - Divine tiding - Sound from there - Satan's village - Sadness holiday - Time and units - Burn, baby, burn (#2?) -
  22. I contacted MC about this one a number of years ago (thought it would make a great Select) - he didn't think it would sell Only one of the Roach's has been released in the US - the remainder Japanese only
  23. Yes on both, esp Konitz - Michael C talked about a Konitz Verve set years ago - hasn't happened
  24. oh so sad & so young!! I have fond memories of seeing him live here in Brisbane in the late 90's with NHOP (Australian tour)
