romualdo replied to romualdo's topic in Discography
thanks all for you're valued input as usual -
The recent batch from March 12 is now OOP on the CD Japan site - luckily I managed to order 11 of the suckers (missed out on 16 others) - wow!! yo've got to be fast here & I even preordered looks like I'll have to get the remainder via HMV Japan (shipping more expensive here) this new batch does not appear to be listed on the Dusty Groove site yet

NYC5 LP Consequences recorded in NY or Copenhagen?
romualdo replied to romualdo's topic in Discography
found more info online - an excellent John Tchicai Discography by Raben he lists Consequences (not Trio) as being part of the later session (Oct 12 - with the 2 other takes/versions of Trio) in Copenhagen Different to what Clifford says is on the back cover of the LP - are those details on the back of an "original" Dutch/UK pressing or a later reissue (Japanese) NEW YORK CONTEMPORARY FIVE: Don Cherry(cnt), John Tchicai(as), Archie Shepp(ts), Don Moore(b), J.C. Moses(dr), Bill Dixon(arr). NYC. Prob. August 23, 1963 (see note) Rufus Fontana(Eu)681.013ZL Crepuscule With Nellie – Trio – Sound Barrier (Cisum) – Wo Wo (Hoppin’) – Note: The above titles are generally listed as recorded at the same session as the ”Rufus” LP (Fontana(Eu)681.014ZL) – i.e. August 23, 1963. According to Tchicai Don Cherry was late for the session – therefore the five titles on the ”Rufus” LP w ere recorded without Cherry; when Cherry arrived the above titles (for the ”Consequences” LP) were recorded. The two records however have different sound characteristics – suggesting different sessions. Same. Copenhagen. October 12, 1963 Consequences Fontana(Eu)681.013ZL Trio (take 1) unissued(see note) Trio (take 2) – All titles on 681.013ZL also on Fontana(Eu)881.013ZY, (J)SFON7077, 195J25, PHCE1001 (CD). Fontana(Eu)681.013ZL: ” New York Contemporary Five – Consequences” . Note: “Trio” (take 1) was used for the film ” Future One” – directed and produced by Niels Holt – issued on Marshmallow(J) MMEX-DVD101 (DVD) (”Jazz In Denmark ”). Same. Live. ”Radiohuset”, Copenhagen. October 27, 1963 Emotions Free Factory 069(CD) Monk’s Mood – Consequenses – -
I'm trying to determine whether this was recorded stateside or in Denmark The session was recorded on August 23, 1963 (the NYA4 minus Cherry LP, "Rufus" was also recorded on the same date) Some sources say it was NYC (recent Book that came with the NYA4 5LP set) mention that it was a demo session recorded just before leaving for Europe The Cherry Mosaic booklet has the Fontana LP as being recorded in Europe Sources (Gullin/Shepp Storyville liner notes) also mention that they reached Europe in early September Lord has Copenhagen & jazzDiscog has NYC Anyone with access to a decent Shepp or Cherry sessionography - the online Cherry one does not commit http://cd-v.net/jazz/cover/cherry/fontana-681013.html After weighing up the evidence, New York sounds more likely to me

Trunk Records have just released the original motion picture soundtrack to early 60's X rated flick "The Small World Of Sammy Lee" (the soundtrack has never been previously released) "I discovered that Kenny also had a daughter. I paid her a visit to talk about Kenny’s life and work and to my delight she’d found a box in her attic full of Kenny’s old quarter-inch reels. One had the word “Sammy” written on a tiny sticker on the front. It just had to be the lost score – and indeed once I’d got it transferred, confirmed it was." http://www.trunkrecords.com/turntable/sammy_lee.shtml It's short (only 24mins) small group jazz material - unfortunately no musician names
-
I would have thought that Johnny Trunk at Trunk Records would have already re-issued these if the masters were available. An interesting candidate for re-issue though.... I had contacted Johnny in the past regarding this but I can't remember what his reply was - looked back at my old Trunk correspondence but couldn't find any references to this

Basil Kirchin's "Worlds Within Worlds" Parts I & II were released on UK Columbia LP (1971) http://www.discogs.com/Basil-Kirchin-Worlds-Within-Worlds/release/1638801 Parts III & IV were released on UK Island (1974) http://www.discogs.com/Basil-Kirchin-Worlds-Within-Worlds/release/878961 would be nice to have both combined as a single release I wonder if Jonathan would be interested in this as a potential release on his label

I'f you're having problems with the Messengers site just email them - they are very helpful & will reply in reasonably quick time (that has been my experience) & sort the problem (I think I had issues with the drop down "state" category too) I placed my order for the "fontanas" yesterday & the full order was shipped by this morning
-
Just a comment on JazzMessengers - on the few communications I have had with them, the reply emails have been signed by "Jordi" - could this be the Jordi Pujol of the "Fresh Sound" stable Is this his legit front business? Based on previous claims (spurious) made on many Fresh Sound releases, calling these CDs "Japanese" could just mean they have been burnt from the original Japanese CD series
-
OMG!! Don't have any of this on vinyl or the earlier Japanese CDs so I bit the bullet & went for it Ordered the 4 from Jazz Messengers - we'll see if they're needle drops/boots - was willing to take the plunge as these are so high on my wants list it's not funny

thanks

I think Ogun may have licenced a Paul Rutherford Ogun release (Bracknell '83 - cassette only) to Emanem who released the material on CD (Ghiem - Live At Bracknell 1983)
-
I know the original "Blue Notes for Mongezi" was released as a double LP on Ogun Records A number of discographies list it as being released in the states on the Nessa label (#13 - or was that Lucky Thompson?) - is that correct & if so was it also a 2LP set I've never seen a copy of this for sale on ebay & other online sellers lists - is this just a perpetuated "myth" You there Chuck?

"Martians Stay Home" is another UK only Atlantic release (was released after "Clickin With Clax"?) - this has been released on a Fresh Sound triple set & the Mosaic box Hopefully this will be released in Japan with the current Atlantic reissue series (4 so far) to round off his Atlantic output

Have there been any decent CD remasterings (especially Paramount) of Skip's material in recent years I only have his material on LP (the 2 Vanguards & Matchbox - Complete Paramount) Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I read a few years back that the Vanguard CDs are not too good sonically (that's why I kept the vinyl) BTW, Wolfgang's Vault has his live performance at the Hampton Jazz Festival 1968 (1 track with The Staple Singers) available as a free download today for subscribers

Similar story here. I visited his apartment circa 1970, in the vicinity of 1st Avenue and 10th Street, saw an unbelievable number of tape decks and equipment and left with a Crown playback deck which I still have (although it hasn't worked in years). More importantly, I also left with six acetate discs of Mingus at Birdland (1961-62) from which I made open reel tapes for myself and a Mingus fanatic in England. Indeed these tapes have been the source of all the copied tapes and ensuing CD-Rs that have been circulating the globe lo these many years. BTW, I still have the acetate discs but haven't attempted to play them in years. I presume this material is the source for the recent (2010) 3CD RLR set (Complete 1961-62 Birdland Broadcasts)

Just found this footage on youtube with Will Friedwald (looks like it was taken at the same time as the above photos from the Wall St Journal article)
-
That is only really two CDs worth, so I wonder if that amounts to a set, or whether there is other material that might make up further discs. half way between a Mosaic Select & Mosaic Single (both now defunct) as a potential CD release (if there is no previously unreleased material) it doesn't seem to make sense - will Hip O Select be interested in this?

"Indiana" was released last year on LAJI CD #11 - "Howard Rumsey/Lighthouse All Stars - Live In The Solo Spotlight" The above date is incorrect according to Ken Poston (LAJI) - it should be Dec 14 (Jack has already been notified by Ken) Ken's commment on potential release is "probably not although it's always a possibility"

What a find & 30min treat Home Cookin' !! he passed away in 1986 so it's likely early to mid 80's just found the original posting on youtube Published on Jan 15, 2014 This video is from a series of recordings by the late master saxophonist Don Wilkerson including The original Ritzy, Pizzaz, and Lott's EMPORIUM. Onxe every blue moon we got blessed by Arnett Cobb.I was blessed to be instructed by him while playing in my bands. Equal regards go out to the late Charles " Spooky " Dancey. Spookey served in the NAVY and would have had wider recognition had he stayed in. All of the Pizzaz footage was possible because of the underwriting by Tulie Evans and the direction under Conrad Johnson the PROF with Joe Nettles and Kenny Andrews contributing. All of the video was done by pea-squared and is a Peters' PRODUCTION.
