Just a comment on JazzMessengers - on the few communications I have had with them, the reply emails have been signed by "Jordi" - could this be the Jordi Pujol of the "Fresh Sound" stable Is this his legit front business? Based on previous claims (spurious) made on many Fresh Sound releases, calling these CDs "Japanese" could just mean they have been burnt from the original Japanese CD series

OMG!! Don't have any of this on vinyl or the earlier Japanese CDs so I bit the bullet & went for it Ordered the 4 from Jazz Messengers - we'll see if they're needle drops/boots - was willing to take the plunge as these are so high on my wants list it's not funny

I think Ogun may have licenced a Paul Rutherford Ogun release (Bracknell '83 - cassette only) to Emanem who released the material on CD (Ghiem - Live At Bracknell 1983)

I know the original "Blue Notes for Mongezi" was released as a double LP on Ogun Records A number of discographies list it as being released in the states on the Nessa label (#13 - or was that Lucky Thompson?) - is that correct & if so was it also a 2LP set I've never seen a copy of this for sale on ebay & other online sellers lists - is this just a perpetuated "myth" You there Chuck?

I think they're only OOP on the CD Japan site Most (if not all) are still available via HMV Japan -> recently ordered a bunch that I missed out on from CD Japan earlier last year

"Martians Stay Home" is another UK only Atlantic release (was released after "Clickin With Clax"?) - this has been released on a Fresh Sound triple set & the Mosaic box Hopefully this will be released in Japan with the current Atlantic reissue series (4 so far) to round off his Atlantic output

Have there been any decent CD remasterings (especially Paramount) of Skip's material in recent years I only have his material on LP (the 2 Vanguards & Matchbox - Complete Paramount) Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I read a few years back that the Vanguard CDs are not too good sonically (that's why I kept the vinyl) BTW, Wolfgang's Vault has his live performance at the Hampton Jazz Festival 1968 (1 track with The Staple Singers) available as a free download today for subscribers

Similar story here. I visited his apartment circa 1970, in the vicinity of 1st Avenue and 10th Street, saw an unbelievable number of tape decks and equipment and left with a Crown playback deck which I still have (although it hasn't worked in years). More importantly, I also left with six acetate discs of Mingus at Birdland (1961-62) from which I made open reel tapes for myself and a Mingus fanatic in England. Indeed these tapes have been the source of all the copied tapes and ensuing CD-Rs that have been circulating the globe lo these many years. BTW, I still have the acetate discs but haven't attempted to play them in years. I presume this material is the source for the recent (2010) 3CD RLR set (Complete 1961-62 Birdland Broadcasts)

That is only really two CDs worth, so I wonder if that amounts to a set, or whether there is other material that might make up further discs. half way between a Mosaic Select & Mosaic Single (both now defunct) as a potential CD release (if there is no previously unreleased material) it doesn't seem to make sense - will Hip O Select be interested in this?

"Indiana" was released last year on LAJI CD #11 - "Howard Rumsey/Lighthouse All Stars - Live In The Solo Spotlight" The above date is incorrect according to Ken Poston (LAJI) - it should be Dec 14 (Jack has already been notified by Ken) Ken's commment on potential release is "probably not although it's always a possibility"

Spookey served in the NAVY and would have had wider recognition had he stayed in. All of the Pizzaz footage was possible because of the underwriting by Tulie Evans and the direction under Conrad Johnson the PROF with Joe Nettles and Kenny Andrews contributing. All of the video was done by pea-squared and is a Peters' PRODUCTION.

The Coleman Hawkins title was an alternate of "Cattin' At Keynote" (Feb 17, 1944) - was on Meritt LP 25 & is not on the Hawkins 4CD set The omitted Hawkins track was in fact the master take which had been issued on 78. The box (and the subsequent CD set) only contained the alternate, and Dan Morgenstern in his otherwise excellent notes denies the existence of a second take as listed in discographies. Thanks for the info. I've enjoyed the 4-CD Complete Coleman Hawkins Keynote box for years, and didn't know about this missing take. This is when having a 78 rig helps - I just went on Ebay and found the Keynote 78 of "Cattin' at Keynote" for a good Buy It Now price. The seller also had a couple of Don Byas 78s I had been looking for. My 78 of "Cattin' at Keynote" finally arrived today - definitely a different take from the "Complete" Hawkins box. On the 78 master, Bean begins his solo with the same lick as on the CD take, but he finishes the phrase differently - and more creatively. The whole solo is more thoughtful and interesting than on the CD take, although it builds up a pretty good head of steam by the third chorus. It makes the more familiar CD take sound kind of forced. Just my opinion, of course, but I prefer the 78 take. I guess Hawkins and Harry Lim did, too, since that's the one they issued. Jeff has a copy of the original 78 - see above

I've just sat down for the last couple of hours & compared the LP set booklet with a download of the track details from the Fresh Sound site Here's the deal (final I hope) There are 334 titles in the LP box & 243 in the CD set (minus the 4 Horace Hendersons make 239) I then worked backwards & counted the alternates in the LP set = 95 & presto 334 minus 95 gives 239 If you have the complete "Essential" Series (Vol. 1-10 or 14CDs with a total of 230 titles - remember, 10 of these were alternates from the Benny Carter disc not in the LP set) plus the new Fresh Sound box you will only be missing out on 7 alternates 1. The Horace Henderson session is listed in the LP box booklet but was not released in the set I've attached the session (from the Lord Discography) - looks like it was only released on Jamboree 78's, so first time on CD as far as I can tell
