  1. Here's my 2c worth the liner notes (have a photocopy) to the MGM LP (3157) state that on "If I Had You" we have Mangelsdorff (tb), Koller (ts), Hipp (p), Roeder (b), Sanner (dm) - a different lineup from the rest of the LP (except for "Brotherly") This title may have been from a Koller led session as these same 5 musicians recorded a few sessions over May/June 53 The Koller New Jazz All Stars Vogue session (10" LD 144) of May/June 53 has an unreleased version of "If I Had You" (Lord Discography) There are 4 unreleased titles listed in the Lord Disco (K3496-13) "If I Had You", "Fine & Dandy", "Hi Beck" & "Lonesome Rd" It looks like the recently released Jazzhaus CD has three titles from this session i.e. "What's New", "These Foolish Things", & "Lonesome Rd" I've listened to both versions of "What's New" (Vogue Digipak & Jazzhaus CDs) & they sound identical with same timings "Lonesome Rd" tees up but "These Foolish Things" is not mentioned I'm wondering if the unreleased version of "If I Had You" is the same as the MGM LP version - It's the same musician lineup "Brotherly" is another tricky one The liner notes to 3157 state that the principal musicians on this title are Emil & Albert Mangelsdorff The Lord Disco does not list any sessions including Emil, Albert & Jutta (none on the Jazzhaus CD either), "Brotherly" is not even on the Lord database - maybe a different title? This one is a mystery

    Norman Howard

some words on NORMAN HOWARD by roy morris i first heard about Albert Ayler in 1964 and bought Spirits on Debut 146 later that year. this danish lp was sold by Collet's, the communist book- store in London. i loveed the music and was thrilled by Albert's highly original trumpeter, Norman Howard. around 1980, i read that George Coppens of Osmosis Records had been in New York and discovered an unreleased session by Norman. but when i contacted him, George had shelved his idea of releasing the music, believing Norman's playing to be inept. i had a cassette copy which i listened to frequently. in 1968 i was in a position to buy the master tape. i produced 100 cassette copies and sold it as SIGNALS on Homeboy music 1. the music was greated with ecstatic reviews and great enthusiasm from those who bought it. With the proceeds i purchased 2 more unmastered tapes i discovered Mr. Coppens owned. these were massive 1/2" reels whose boxes bore Bernard Stollman's writing and had clearly once "belonged" to ESP-DISK. i added this music to Signals and put it out as side b of Homeboy music 2 cassette entitled BURN, BABY, BURN in 1993. this time the plan was to distribute it via William Parker's Stork Music set-up. Unfortunately this went out of business, so i ended up giving the remaining copies to musicians i thought might be interested. this was hardly a commercial enterprise, but i was contacted by Henry Rollins (ex. Black Flag) who thought the music was great, and wanted to release it with "significant publicity" on his own 2.13.61 label. i happily sold him the masters in 1997. since then, there has been only resounding silence. i was never able to contact Mr. Howard or find out what became of him. no-one in Cleveland seemed to know. Joe Phillips converted to Islam, becoming Yusef Mumin, and moved to Milwaukee. Norman also became a Muslim in the early 80's, and may have followed Yusef there. incidentally, Sunny Murray, recalling the Spirits session, remembered Norman playing his own compositions, including Witches And Devils, for two hours before demonstrating the music on Sunny's drums and then switching to alto saxophone! if any-one would like to hear Norman's music, send whatever you like to me at 5 hill road, arbroath, angus dd11 1bx, scotland, uk and i will be happy to make you a cassette copy of Burn, Baby, Burn. maybe we can make something happen. this music deserves to be heard. I have a "cassette only" release on Homeboy Music, Fife, Scotland. The cassette was issued in 1989. The title is "Signals". Norman Howard - trumpet Joe Phillips - alto Walter Cliff - bass Corney Millsap - drums "All songs composed by Norman Howard and recorded November 1968 in Cleveland Ohio." Side 1 Soul Brother Genius Burn, Baby, Burn Haunted Side 2 Bug Out Deep Black Mystery Soul Resurrection Revisiting this thread as I've just obtained MP3's of the Homeboy releases (cassette 01 & 02) - 12 titles in all The above cassette (01 - Signals) is a copy of the first "mastered" tape obtained by Roy Morris -> was this the proposed "unreleased" ESP 1073 (or was it going to be a mixture from both sessions as the 2007 CD) It appears that the 2007 ESP CD release is a mixture of both sessions (the mastered tape plus the further two unmastered ones -> comprising the second cassette, Burn Baby Burn - 02; this also contained the contents of cassette 01) Maybe Clifford could shed some light on this Norman Howard [H8465-13] Signals: Norman Howard (tp) Joe Phillips (as) [aka Yusef Mumin (as) ] Walter Cliff (b) Corney Millsap (d) Cleveland, Ohio, November, 1968 Soul brother genius Homeboy Music (Scot)1 [Cass], 2 [Cass] Burn, baby, burn - - Haunted - - Bug out - - Deep black mystery - - Soul resurrection - - Divine tiding - Sound from there - Satan's village - Sadness holiday - Time and units - Burn, baby, burn (#2?) -
  3. I contacted MC about this one a number of years ago (thought it would make a great Select) - he didn't think it would sell Only one of the Roach's has been released in the US - the remainder Japanese only
  4. Yes on both, esp Konitz - Michael C talked about a Konitz Verve set years ago - hasn't happened
  5. oh so sad & so young!! I have fond memories of seeing him live here in Brisbane in the late 90's with NHOP (Australian tour)
  6. import CDs has this already listed (release July 16) - that's where I'll be buying it from Got the previous three from here - they're all still available too!! http://www.importcds.com/Search/Results?type=200&lbl=international+phonograph
  7. James Accardi has just informed me that he has added more bits & pieces to the WG site http://wardellgray.org This is a rewarding site if you're are a Wardell fan Check the documents section - interesting images of various contracts (including Basie Band), some great pics too - the one with WG & Ake Hasselgard is a killer!! For all you fans of the "Elks Auditorium" Bopland set - it appears that Teddy Edwards was present near the end of the concert & played on the last chorus of Geronimo (Cherokee) - mentioned in the discography (I was never aware of this) From Dave Bailey comes the information that, although uncredited, the final soloist is Teddy Edwards. Edwards is heard after Gray’s solo on Jeronimo - Edwards confirmed this in a letter to Bailey, stating he arrived late to the concert. During Han Schulte's interview with Teddy Edwards (October 3rd, 1980), Teddy mentions his appearance on Cherokee (“Jeronimo”) and talks about the situation while listening to the recording. I have transcribed portions of Teddy's comments: “In fact on that record, the one that – the one that, ‘Jeronimo’ – I had been over to a friends of mine’s house, and we had been practicin’ and I came in just time to play the solo… The last chorus was me, although my name is not on the record, but I played the last – right! I played the last chorus on that solo [. . .] I noticed when they reissued it they didn’t have my name on it, ‘cause they probably didn’t know. ‘Cause I just got in on the tail end of the set, I showed up at the very end of the thing, you know [. . .] I was rushin’ to get to the bandstand . . . But I wasn’t supposed to be on the gig, I had been over to a friend of mine’s house practicin’, another saxophone player we been over there practicin’ in the book, you know. Prez Harris. And I said – and he lived right around the corner from there… We were supposed to get there in time to play, you know, and we got involved in these books, you know…”
  8. the number of cassettes I've bought I could count on two hands - they were usually items you couldn't get on vinyl (exclusively cassette & pre CD) eg from The Richard Thompson fan club (Flypaper) or the US Roir label (punk/New Wave semi bootleg material) still have them though
  9. Is this concert still available on CD - what's the most recent CD pressing (Konnex)? Has been released on Venus (J) & Konnex (G)(with the Lono solo concert also) The Konnex site mentions it but doesn't say it's available? (my German is not too good - minimal at best) Have been trying to source this for a number of years now (since the mid 90's)
  10. Oh shit, that's very sad! bummer!! bought some CDs from Mike not that long ago (Ayers, Dean, Trad Dads comp) was a great/esoteric label ps - can you still buy directly from Mike (better the $$ go straight to him)
  11. Bullshit Does this mean that you have a copy of this that you can clearly hear the whole band? On the cassette I have, NHOP's bass overloads the mic in a couple of places, It sounds like his mic level is cranked up too much. However, I don't recall Mobley ever coming through clearly. What does come through is great stuff but I can't get past the crappy sound. I'll have to dig out that cassette (and cassette deck) again. Maybe as the years have worn on I can appreciate it more? I gotta dig out my CDRs too, I don't at all recall NHOP overloading the mic and while Hank is somewhat 'distant' not so much that I couldn't enjoy this rare glimpse of, as Michael points out, Hank really stretching out. I agree - have listened to my 3 CDr set (AIFF files made from FLAC's if I can recall) Hank's tenor shines through quite well & the bass is not overpowering
  12. looking forward to this
  13. Sorry to hear this "Break On Through" was being played on the radio when I got into the car this morning - then I heard the news after the song finished I also wasn't aware of his cancer struggle Loved his version of Carmina Burana
  14. have been waiting for this release for a while now - even made a request to Hazel a few years ago just made my day
  15. I'm particularly interested in the Hipp material It was originally released last year but on LP only - they've now just released a CD version Will get it from Jazz Messengers
  16. Oh Yeah!! - would love that Also what about a Gene Norman "Modern Music" set covering his live concerts from the mid-late 40's - that would include a lot of live Wardell No one has attempted a decent retrospective except for sporadic dodgy "boot" releases A good model for this would be the 3CD "Bopland" set that used the original source material

  18. Wolfgang's Vault have released their first LP (CV LP-001) - 180gm vinyl & sounding pretty darn good (warm analogue sound) on my low end system It's available free if you subscribe - Don't think you can buy it outright from the site?

  20. The Monk Newport 59 concert (available as download) has been released on LP (180gm) by Wolfgang's Vault - my copy arrived today (it's being given away with WV subscriptions - still had to pay for shipping to Australia though) I don't think you can buy it outright from the site. Dig the cover.
