  5. They are worth it, even at full price. An interesting shelf-clearing exercise of unreleased tapes and old Leo lps. At least one disc per box set is excellent. I highly recommend the Guyvoronsky/Volkov, Homo Liber, Orkestrion, Chekasin and Vysniauskas discs. Some interesting stuff on the Andrew Solovyev/Igor Grigoriev and Vapirov discs as well. I consider these 4 sets essential documents of late 20th century Soviet jazz/improv, especially vols I (Kuryokhin, Ponomareva, Vapirov) & IV (Ganelin members) Get these while you can, especially at these prices
  6. yep!! ordered "Contrabasses" in my most recent order - have to agree with Stefan
  7. thanks for the link to the covers - they really kick ass
  8. I've been following his site recently missed out on the Brackeen/Cherry Rhythm X CD (currently high on my wants list) - went for under $30 - was too late & didn't get a chance to bid That disc was not a Fontana. was aware of that - Strata East
  9. I've been following his site recently missed out on the Brackeen/Cherry Rhythm X CD (currently high on my wants list) - went for under $30 - was too late & didn't get a chance to bid
  10. Currently for sale on ebay - way out of my price range!! ($70 a piece) but just love these covers!! (amongst my fave jazz LP art) http://www.ebay.com/sch/takarayama/m.html?item=251163256364&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562 Have these ever been domestically released?
  11. Mike, many thanks for the interest & effort If unsure always "go to the source" Another Monk discography item that needs to be sorted is/are the Paris Olympia Concert(s) - I commenced a thread on this last year
  12. totally agree - I find that discographical information can be initially erroneously entered then perpetuated through the years & from discography to discography look forward to your findings
  13. Did TM record "Honeysuckle Rose" once or twice for Columbia There's a bit of confusion surrounding this track Version 1. Studio trio (Gales & Riley) version from March 2, 1965 -> this session was all solo material except for Honeysuckle... This title was released on the Columbia LP "Misterioso" (not had a US release on CD), a mixed bag of live/fake-live tracks According to Robin Kelley's book (pp 371 & 544) Teo Macero added an applause track & sourced it as live at the Village Gate - it was actually the studio version Version 2. Live (Jazz Workshop) Nov 3, 1964 - an incomplete version according to the Lord Discog (CO 85107) first released on the double LP "Always Know" in 79 This is supposed to run for about 10mins according to info I have; It wasn't released on the double Workshop CD from the early 2000's - wonder why? (non Monk material??) I don't have any Columbia copies of this title (vinyl or CD) There is a version on the triple Monk Columbia compilation from the early 2000's - is it an alternate or actually the released March 2, 1965 version (with or without applause) or the real "live" version from the JW Also, was this title really recorded at the JW or was it "faked/tweaked" too What version is on the euro CD release of Misterioso Any Monk scholars or others with access to these LPs/Cds out there who can help me out
  14. Anyone have a Booker Little discography. I'm a completist on this one! Alan Saul's discography is very helpful (also a good Eric Dolphy discog) http://adale.org/Discographies/Booker.html
  15. thanks for the link Interestingly another 10" I picked up was the first Martin Denny liberty release "Exotica" - again it contains the 10 titles that were released on the 12" in the US This 10" is listed in BSN - APB 1000 London (UK) series - it has the same catalogue number as its UK counterpart (HB-U1079) - the mono version was on a 10" while the stereo version was on a 12" I'm sure i've read somewhere that the stereo version was rerecorded at a later date hence the 12" stereo release - I don't think this would apply to the Chris Connor LP ie 10" mono & 12" stereo releases but who knows?? http://bsnpubs.com/london/londonamerican/1londonam1000.html
  16. pretty close with Booker Little working my way through Eric Dolphy, Joe Harrriott (need more CD reissues), Hank Mobley
  17. here's the cover & label of the Australian 10"
  18. The solo Herbie Nichols recording is very interesting. would have pounced on that (any Herbie Nichols material) but it's a bit recent & not in the sale list
  19. Leo did the same thing late last year I bought a truckload of CDs from him last time - probably do the same again this year trying out Simon Nabatov with my first order - any advice from fans out there
  20. romualdo

try grooves-inc (switzerland) I think they have them for 6.99 euros
  21. David Many thanks for that really dig these tidbits of oral history that are shared in this site
  22. I did find Ivan Santiago's site (google search) before I started this thread - sent him an email last week to which he replied on the weekend -> I'm sending him pics of the cover & label Thanks anyway I stand corrected as this must have been released as a 10" in the UK too - the serial # above is almost identical to the Aussie one ie LZ-NA 14036 (only cap A added - probably signifies Australia) this 10" The Lord discography mentions the UK LP (LZ-N 14036) - I mistakenly thought this was a 12" Has anyone ever seen a UK pressing of this 10" & was there a 12" UK version? I'll upload some pics in the next day or so
  23. Had a chance to go through 10,000 LPs last week (mostly MOR music from the 40's, 50's & 60's - 78's, 45's, 10" & 12" LPs) Did find a small number of jazz gems One of the more interesting pieces was an Australian 10" LP (London label) of Chris Connor's 1st Bethlehem 12" release "This Is Chris" - it contains the 10 titles but the cover is slightly different from the US 12". AFAIK there were only 2 Connor Bethlehem 10" LPs (1001 & 1002) I can find no record (in any discographies) of a 10" version of this - the UK 12" release was also on London (almost identical serial # to this Aussie one too) - I don't think this was released in the UK as a 10". I think Australia continued to press 10" LPs for a few years after the US & UK ceased this format. BTW the SQ of this old disc (over 55 years old) is amazing Maybe I should have posted this in the Vinyl/Great finds section?
  24. shocked!! - only in his early 60's though he did have a renal transplant a couple of years ago love his work but never got to see him RIP David S
