The Freddie Redd/Butch Warren quintet will have its first club date next week-end at the historic Bohemian Caverns in D.C., Friday 2/11 and Saturday 2/12. This is particularly significant for Butch since it was at the Caverns that he met Kenny Dorham, who brought him to NYC in late '59 - the rest is history. They will be accompanied by Brad Linde (ts, bars, arr), Brian Settles (ts) and Tony Martucci (d). I will be there on 2/12 (I'll be at Duke U. for the Wayne Shorter gig on 2/11). Thanks for the tip about the Amazon MP3. I may just buy the two missing tracks as downloads. Here's something odd though. My iTunes files for 'Things Ain't ...' and 'Blue 'n' Boogie' show the timings 10:48 and 8:10 (respectively). The timings on Amazon are 11:43 and 8:49. Were the tracks on the Blue Note CD truncated? Noal Cohen's Frank Strozier discography also has the shorter timings and mentions nothing about edits. I'll contact Noal about this. Bertrand.

I usually don't buy Lonehill stuff, but I got the Freddie Redd in Sweden figuring this one be its one and only CD incarnation ever. The piano sounds bad on this. Was the original LP like that? Bertrand. P.S. Freddie returns to Sweden in March. Something he does every 20-30 years!

The thing about sitting in with Blakey at the Vanguard is apparently common knowledge in the NYC music circles - I heard it from a former Messenger (but not one who was in the band at the time). I'm surprised that the story would not have been on RK's radar screen, if only for him to possibly refute after studious research. Looking at Mike Fitzgerald's Blakey chronology, this was the week of December 27, 1977-January 1, 1978 - my source also confirmed that Curtis Fuller was there. Odd that this seems to have been Blakey's last gig at the Vanguard - the Gordons never hired him in the 80s??? I will assume it it true unless someone refutes it later. If I were to research this, I would start by talking to Valery Ponomarev, Bobby Watson, David Schnitter and Curtis Fuller. I'm sure they would remember. Bertrand.
