  1. Anybody tried to give her a ring? Bertrand.
  2. I'll be in France from 6/25 to 7/17. imnworld.com lists a few Wayne gigs, but I know they don't list everything. Does anyone know of any other shows in France during this time? Paris would be perfect. He is not scheduled for the Festival which takes place every week-end in a park, although I will be seeing Wallace Roney on 7/6. Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  3. Wayne likes to quote the theme to 'Star Wars' in his solos. I'm curious to tabulate how often he has done this. I'll keep notes as I am listening to his recordings, but I thought we could keep a running list here. Obviously, it's mostly going to be on live dates, and after 1977. There are rumors that some private recordings exist where he may do this as well, but of course that would be beyond the scope of this board Example 1: From 'All Blues', on A Tribute To Miles, from 10:08-10:20. Bertrand.
  4. Thanks to everyone for their kind wishes. And in answer to Patrick - of course, row E! Bertrand.
  5. I was able to snag a copy today at Borders' with the 40% coupon - very few of their stores in the DC area got it at all. I think someone is going to give me this for Father's day I wonder if Grachan III was able to get a copy. If not, I may just get him one when I come back from vacation. Bertrand.
  6. A friend of mine was under the impression this was about to be RVG'ed. This is a Contemporary date, so that does not make sense. I think he's confusing it with the Keepnews Collection of Freedom Suite. Thanks, Bertrand.
  7. Brian's Mingus biography is wonderful - I was just discovering his music at the time, and this book really opened it up for me. Welcome to the forum - I hope you can stick around and contribute frequently. Bertrand.
  8. Happy birthday Ray! Hope to see you again next time I'm in L.A. Bertrand.
  9. I saw the documentary - it's fabulous. Bertrand.
  10. Try hunting down the very interesting and very rare Theremingus album. The version of 'Pithecanthropus Erectus' alone is worth the price of admission.

Thanks Michael, I sent you a reply. Bertrand.

Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays! The pianist on Wednesdays is Peter Edelman, Amy Bormet on Fridays and Dwayne Adell on Saturdays. I watched this again and am really impressed with it, as are several people I spoke to. I am very flattered that I was listed in the credits, I just don't want the more cantankerous people in the jazz world out there (you know who they are) to think I am taking more credit that I deserve for anything. The Butch story is still evolving. Anyone know how I can sheet music from his repertoire? I tried the most obvious source, but hit a dead-end. Thanks, Bertrand.
  13. 'For instance, on the new CD we have a tune called Groovadelphia. It's based on drum pattern by Steve Jordan that I saw on YouTube. I sent it to Randy and said, "Let's write something around this.' I fully expect 'Groovadelphia' to be yanked from subsequent pressings of the new CD due to a lawsuit by Steve Jordan

Some friends of mine put together a nice video on Butch at MSNBC. Disclaimer: they very kindly credited me with 'research', but honestly my role was minimal. Bertrand.
  15. I for one am grateful to Ms. Malkin for exposing the truth about Rachael Ray's insidious ties to middle-east terrorists. Don't you uneducated goobers know that 'it's delish' is code for 'death to America'?
  16. The CD and the discography say 3/14/68. But the liner notes say that 'A Time To Go' was written after Dr. King was assassinated (4/4/68). Any thoughts? Bertrand.
  17. Augustin, What is Crazeology? Can I listen to this somewhere? A quick glance shows a private recording of Dewey Redman from 1979. The first track is probably 'Qow', not 'Wow'. Bertrand.
  18. I knew something was weird. 1) I know they are unreliable, but jazzdisco.org does not have Dexter ever recording a track called 'Swingin' On Savoy'. 2) The iTunes CD called Savoy On Central Avenue - The Master Recordings Volume One has a track called 'Swingin' On Savoy' by the Dexter Gordon quintet. 3) There is a 2-CD set on CD universe also called Savoy On Central Avenue which has Harold Land playing 'Swingin' On Savoy'. I listened to the sound bites for both - I believe it's the same performance. Harold Land at 21 does not have that unique sound I know from the late 60s session with Hutcherson, but there is certainly no obvious reason to think the track is Dexter. Also, it seems it is more a septet than a quintet. My conclusion: the track on iTunes called 'Swingin' On Savoy' is the Harold Land septet, not the Dexter Gordon quintet. Anyone else agree with me? Bertrand.
  19. I didn't ask my question correctly. I'm trying to find a CD compilation with all four tracks. I assume SJL 2215 is the two-LP set entitled Black California. Was this ever on CD with ALL the same tracks? I suspect not. From what I can tell on the web, there is no CD collection with all these tracks currently available. Savoy On Central Avenue only has the three Land originals. 'April' is on something called Savoy First Steps. I wonder if the track 'Swingin' On Savoy' performed by Dexter Gordon is the Harold Land composition. Bertrand.
  20. Somehow, I did not know about this before: Harold Land Septet Froegel Brigham (tp) Russell B. Campbell (tb) William S. Doty (as) Harold Land (ts) Fred Jackson (p) Dave Dyson (b) Leon Petties (d) Los Angeles, CA, April 25, 1949 SLA524 Outlandish Savoy SJL 2215 SLA525 Swingin' On Savoy - SLA526 San Diego Bounce Regent 1020; Savoy SJL 2215 SLA527 I'll Remember April - * Various Artists - Black California (Savoy SJL 2215) * Harold Land - Dan Diego Bounce c/w I'll Remember April (Regent 1020) The compilation Savoy On Central Avenue does not seem to have 'I'll Remember April', which is annoying. Is there any compilation that has all four tracks? Various other compilations on iTunes allow you to get 'San Diego Bounce' and 'April', but not the other two tracks. There is also a 'Swingin' on Savoy' recorded by Dexter Gordon. Bertrand.
  21. Make sure to let us know if you are hitting the D.C. area! Bertrand.
  22. Great! Something to look forward to for the end of the summer. Do you have a title for the new CD yet? Bertrand.
  23. I'll be there Friday night. I'll go for broke - Joe Chambers isn't playing anywhere after midnight, by any chance? He's moving out of NYC soon... Bertrand.
  24. I'll be there on 5/23. The lineup is: Rene McLean Charles Tolliver Grachan Moncur III Alan Palmer Cecile McBee Jack DeJohnette Amiri Baraka Anyone else going? I'm not sure how long I'll be in NYC (I'm going up by bus). Are there any clubs that have music until late (like 3-4) except for Smalls and the Fat Cat? What record stores are worth checking out other than the Jazz Record Center? Thanks, Bertrand.
  25. Who's the redheaded hottie? Definitely trumps Hillary and Cindy.
