I'm in! Looking forward to the new record. Bertrand.

I am going to see Ben in Baltimore on 10/24. Not sure if it's the same project. Bertrand.

Will these be LPs only? Bertrand.

jazzdiscography.com has a 'circa 1964' date for the Connecticut Jazz Party, FWIW. Bertrand.

Is the Collectables version of this a needle drop or the real deal? If it's a needle drop, I'll spring for the Japanese version. Thanks, Bertrand.

For a research project I have undertaken, I am scooping up all the Left Bank Jazz Society CDs I can find. I just got the Dexter Gordon LTD. Great music, but the reissue label is actually the ZYX arm of Fantasy, which I did not realize when I ordered it. The reproduction of the cover art is poorly done - the song titles are all blurry, and the back cover almost looks like a xerox copy. Could this be a CD-R? I didn't think ZYX pressings were CDRs. Or is the US pressing just as sloppy? Also, is this one of Bobby Timmons' last recordings? Thanks, Bertrand.

Sold! Bertrand.

Wikipedia makes the following claim concerning Sleep Dirt: The 2012 Universal Music reissue reverts to the original vinyl version of the album. Is this correct - no vocals overdubbed, all-instrumental album, last track 13+ minutes? If so, I will get it. I love the instrumental version of this record. Thanks, Bertrand.

Some interesting shows coming up in DC

Reminder - the music of Lee Morgan this Thursday 9/20 5-7 PM. Bertrand. -
Is Tapestry the only recording Curtis Amy made with Carole King? That's what a discographical search seems to suggest. Thanks, Bertrand.

Let's start a new thread - grumpy jazz musicians Bertrand.

Does Yusef Lateef count in your Bill Evans list? There's a Steve Davis (bass) and Steve Davis (trombone). I once saw a drummer with that name playing at Visiones. Don't know much about him. Lee Morgan (trumpet) and Lee Morgan (bass). Bertrand.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Worth hearing, but bring earplugs. His philosophy is to play as LOUD AS POSSIBLE. Bertrand. -
Just scored the Denon Chambers LP Punjab from da bastards for $7 (it started at $25 but I guess no one wanted it at the price). Solo piano all the way - I love his sparse piano playing. He never plays too many notes. No flash here, just beauty. Bertrand.

I see now that the Rene Thomas discography is saying that only 2 tracks are on the CD but the formatting problem makes it confusing. Looks like I will never be able to buy this - except weren't there some Joe Henderson tracks from this magazine that you could get as MP3s from Amazon? I will check. Bertrand.

Howard McGhee - Plays Music from "The Connection"

Very confused at this point. Bertrand. -
The René Thomas discography online has the session below. It seems to have been on CD at some point. Is Philology a legit label? Can this CD still be found? Is Mengelberg really on bass? Thanks, Bertrand. October 21, 1965 LEE KONITZ Round Midnight All The Things You Are Baby Baby All The Time 317 East 32nd Street Groningen, HOLLAND Philology (It) W65-2 [CD] Philology (It) W65-2 [CD] Dutch radio Dutch radio René Thomas (guitar), Lee Konitz (alto sax), Misha Mangelberg (bass), Han Bennink (drums) P.S. Found their site and they seem to be legit - I have the Konitz plays Shorter CD. I don't see the one above on their site, however.

Does the bio address this change in guitars he was using early in his career? I'll try to look later. Bertrand.

I posted my general views on this on the other thread, but let's apply my thoughts to this particular case: how does one know that the release being discussed is unauthorized? I strongly suspect it is, but how would I know for sure? What if the person behind this label was a truly dedicated person who did years and years of leg work dealing with the Miles estate, got all the t's crossed and i's dotted, and then finds out that everyone thinks he's a bootlegger? Of course, the bootleggers are to blame for creating this paradigm that every release from an unknown label is a boot unless proven othewise, but it's really a sad situation. I know there are telltale signs like 'made in Spain' and such, but still, how does one really know? Bertrand. Edit: changed 'maid in Spain' to 'made in Spain'. I must have had the 'Maids of Cadiz' on my brain.

I agree with the concept of the rule, but how does one know? The example at hand: Coltrane at the Sutherland 1961. How does one know it is a boot? Amazon does not say 'note: this is a boot'. I know because I've been around the block, but how does a newbie know? We don't always have George Russell's widow around to helpully point out the rip-off labels. Another example: the new Uptown stuff. I assume Dr. Bob is totally on the up-and-up and have always assumed so. He does a beautiful job with his reissues and vault releases - the way these things should always be done. Yet one musician who made a recording for him (non-reissue) claims he was never paid. So how can I know for sure these are legit; if I believe my source, his record is not legit in the sense where the artist was not compensated. Yet I find it hard to believe that Sunenblick's product is not legit; he even won the lawsuit that Sue Mingus brought on. Perhaps my contact did not understand his contract. My point is: it's very hard to tell what is legit or not, especially when it is sold by legitimate vendors such as Amazon. We are not talking about a case of 'the internet is your friend'. This is a billion dollar company we are looking at. My suggestion: change the rule to forbid posting of links to any recordings, just to be safe. Limiting it to 'major labels' is an option but I think it would be too vague. Someone could just post something along the lines of: 'Amazon shows a new issue of Coltrane at the Sutherland coming out. I don't know if it's legit or not, but it sure sounds interesting'. My two cents. Flame away. Bertrand.

Every photo of Coles I've ever seen shows the skin discoloration. He must have had a severe case of Vitiligo, as Michael Jackson did. Early photos of Grant have a mustache which he got rid of later. It makes him look a little different. Bertrand.

Any idea of a setlist for the Grant Green? I am getting this one as soon as it comes out! Bertrand.

Did Leonard Feather really write that crap? Boy, he was an asshole. Bertrand.

Kevin has been trying to get an answer on this question as well in the 'reissues' forum but no luck. I may go ahead and take the plunge anyway. I hope they are not needle drops. Bertrand.

The thought of running into Anthony Braxton at Red Lobster just blows my mind. Bertrand.
