Idiotic amazon pricing policy. I bought each track individually for a total of $4.95 instead of $9.99 for the whole thing. Bertrand.

I picked up this CD at the Jazz Record Center in NYC. Just opened it and see that it is 'manufactured and distributed by Jazz Heritage' (this is written above the bar code). The actual CD says 'Jazz Heritage Society', no Blue Note logo, and it is black and white, not Blue. So is this a CD-R? The booklet does not look like a copy, but the paper is flimsier. Is this a sort of yourmusic.com CD club? At least their pressings looked like real Blue Notes. It does not look like an amazon CD-R. Ironically, I passed on two Andrew Hill Soul Notes because I thought all Soul Notes out there now are CDRs. Is this the case? Bertrand.

Freddie Redd will be on NPR tomorrow. Also in Baltimore (An Die Musik) on 5/27 and at the Smithsonian with Butch Warren (free concert) on 7/19 at 5:00 PM. Bertrand.

This group will be in DC next Tuesday and includes 3 Zappa alumni (Don Preston, Napoleon Murphy Brock and Tom Fowler). Has anyone seen or heard this group? Thanks, Bertrand.

Catching this band on Friday and Saturday. What tunes did they do? Bertrand.

I am going up to NYC tomorrow for both nights of the quartet, followed by the 11:30 Endangered Species set across the hall at Dizzy's. Anyone else going? Bertrand.

I was thinking in terms of using an available source as an 'after-the- fact' verification of one's transcription. I would imagine that this approach would have some pedagogical merit. Now one could debate how accurate the transcriptions on the above-named site are, but I have no desire to get into such a debate. Bertrand.

Guess you never took a marketing class. I am not at all sure that this is a smart marketing strategy in this day and age. Sure, there are probably a number of people who will buy this set only because of the single new disc. But I bet that there are a lot more people like me, who would have gladly pre-ordered a single release of disc 3 for $25, but will now wait and download it somewhere for free without any feelings of guilt. I make a point of not taking free downloads of music that is commercially available. But if a music company wants to play dirty with me, trying to force me to re-purchase music that I have already have, technology now allows me to play dirty too. I understand where you are coming form with your statement. I have the other material and can't see buy the same music a second time for the one live disc. But if I stumble upon a 50 dollar bill floating in the wind, I will use it to by this release. Good news: Woody III has made the 5 Stepping Stones bonus cuts available as MP3s at Amazon. I can live with this solution to the problem. Bertrand.

You can also buy a lead sheet at jazzleadsheets.com (Don Sickler's site). 4 different parts, 99 cents each. Bertrand.

That's a very wise approach. If I access multiple times with the same IP address, does this count as one hit or many? In the latter case, we at organissimo might be able to speed up the release! Bertrand.

Decoding Album and Song Title Meanings

That's a word used to describe what is more commonly known as the bridge. I think Monk might have used it too. I've heard it a few times over the years, but not too many. Didn't Monk call the bridge the 'inside'? Bertrand. -
Happy birthday! Bertrand.

Herbie Hancock Memoir
bertrand replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I am REALLY looking forward to reading Herbie's book in 2014! Bertrand. -
A student of Teddy's reports that he passed away last night. I have no other details. Teddy played at the Atlas Theatre here in D.C. in October, recreating the tentet music with Brad Linde and his group. This was probably Teddy's very last gig. Bertrand.

How much is shipping? What do you guys do about customs? Thanks, Bertrand.

I always wondered about the meaning of Herbie Hancock's 'Speak Like A Child'. Bertrand. -
If you go to the label's site (see Jim's link), you will see that an MP3 of the whole LP is now available for $4.50. Bertrand.

I always had a hunch that Herbie's statement was not quite correct. I'm sure his pieces were altered more significantly - e.g. the rehearsal take of 'Madness'. Bertrand.

I have heard that before, but then Herbie once claimed that Wayne's tunes were the only ones that Miles did NOT tinker with. A lot of research needs to be done on this question, but of course to do a comparison you need the original piece as Wayne showed it to Miles. Keith Waters does this comparison in his book on the second quintet, but he is using the copyright deposits, which are not necessarily what was brought to the session. Have you seen the lead sheets that are in the book 'We Want Miles' which was the catalog for the Miles exhibit which was held in Paris, Montreal and I think Brazil as well? There are some Wayne and Herbie lead sheets in there. I wonder how they compare to the recordings. I wish I were a musician so I could do this work myself. Bertrand.

Interesting piece, although I am not quite sure how it would have sounded as played by the second quintet for which it was apparently written. Frustrating that I was not aware of it when I prepared the composition inventory for Wayne's bio. Of course, he has written a few pieces since I did this in 2006, none of which have been officially recorded by Wayne: 'Prometheus Unbound', 'Pegasus', 'Mir', 'Terra Incognita' (recorded by Imani Winds'), 'Aurora' (written for Renee Fleming) and of course 'Lotus' which was the Philly museum commission. I will edit later if I think of others. Bertrand.

Can this Dewey Redman 'Look For The Black Star' Black Lion vault remaster be trusted? Bertrand.

There is indeed one quartet track on this record. Bertrand.
