The Landslide LP was made up of tracks from 3 different sessions. 'Landslide' was an out-take from Dexter Calling, and the other 6 were from two incomplete sessions. Of course, all these tracks were in the Blue Note Dexter box. But, other than 'Landslide' which was added to the Dexter Calling CD issue, were any of the other tracks issued on CD in the U.S. outside of the box? My brain remembered that some of these were bonus cuts on various BN Dexter CDs, but I just checked all 8 and they do not seem to be there. If this is correct, then I will get the new Japanese reissue of Landslide. My brain at 49 does not work too well. Thanks, Bertrand.

Some interesting shows coming up in DC

Good to see you again there. I thought the Mance concert was a lot of fun. The baritone sax/violin front line was a change of pace. The highlight for me was their version of 'Idle Moments'. I've never heard that tune played live by anyone. Bertrand. -
In the case of the recording mentioned, according to Zawinul's bio, it was an intentional slight on his part. I can't remember what his beef was with Alias and Burton. Bertrand.

Will I still get $50 worth of downloads when I renew my WVIP membership for $48 in a month? Thanks, Bertrand.

This is a great session with Woody Shaw and Carlos Garnett. Anyone have any idea what the 'Unknown' tune is? I have a hunch it's a George Cables composition. Bertrand.

John Mosca was the person I was going to ask as well. Was this the only Shorter piece for which the Jones/Lewis Orchestra had an arrangement? Bertrand. -

I'll try to find out more about a possible 'Dolores' arrangement. This is a very tantalizing discovery. I'm still trying to find the arrangements of 'Nellie Blye' that both Maynard Ferguson and Gerry Mulligan played (not sure if they were two different arrangements). Bertrand. -
A load of new stuff at Wolfgang's Vault

I bought this one but IIRC, Sheila Jordan is never actually heard. Bertrand. -
1) The two pieces by Bill Lee on the Johnny Griffin record are 'Nocturne' and 'As We All Know'. These have no composer credit on the AMG. 2) Clifton Lee is listed as a trumpet player on the Brass Company record. He must be a relative. 3) I think there are some Bill Lee pieces on Richard Davis' With Understanding. 4) 'John Coltrane' is definitely one of the better-known ones, but 'Deeds, Not Words' and 'Jodie's Cha-Cha' are also known through Max Roach's versions. I would say that the piece 'Nola' (vocal version) from the soundtrack to She's Gotta Have It is probably his best-known tune. Anyone who has seen the movie will remember it because of the dancers and the fact that it is the scene in the movie in color. And the number of people on the planet who have seen this film probably far surpasses the number of people who have heard the Roach or Jordan records! Bertrand.

Three tracks from this session recorded 6/6/57 were issued. jazzdisco.org lists a fourth track, 'Loba', which was never issued. Does the Fresh Sound Shihab compilation contain any other tracks from this session not listed on jazzdisco.org? Do we know who wrote 'Loba'? Thanks, Bertrand.

This is great, Michael. Thanks! Of course, it seems to be incomplete - I don't see 'Don't Follow The Crowd'. What are 'BG Cues'? Bertrand.

1) Contacting him is definitely something we plan on doing later, but the project is still in its infancy. 2) Consuela Lee Morehead is Bill's sister/Spike's Aunt, also a fine composer but not exclusively jazz. That tune is also on a Max Roach record, but credited to both Bill and Consuela. I'll have to look into that. 3) There seems to be a CD of the score to Do The Right Thing, i.e. not the movie soundtrack. I may try to find a copy or buy the DL. Does anyone know the personnel on this? I'm assuming Joe Chambers is not involved. Looks like Branford Marsalis might be. Bertrand. PS: Thanks for remembering the Griffin record. It seems there ARE two Bill Lee tunes on it. This is great, and exactly what I was looking for - pieces scattered here and there. Hard to remember all of them, and the Lord CD does not have composers... Kind of like Cal Massey, except there is at least a list on the web for Massey that can be used as a starting point. I will see what I can find at allmusic and at the copyright office.

Listening to this again, it's definitely not Joe Chambers on 'Nola'. I really have learned to recognize his playing over the years, after all the listening I have done. Bertrand.

For a volunteer project that I am working on (more on that later), I am trying to put together an inventory of compositions written by Bill Lee (Spike's father). Only some online discographies have composer credits, and I went through those. Lord etc. do not have this feature. I can't seem to figure out how to do it with allmusic anymore under the new design. And of course, I went through my personal collection (Max Roach, Clifford Jordan, Frank Strozier). There's a Richard Davis LP I do not have. What makes it trickier is that he often does not play on the records that include his compositions. Does anyone have titles for the pieces he wrote for his son's early movies? She's Gotta Have It is all Bill Lee and I have that covered, but what about School Daze, Do The Right Thing etc? Those have some Bill Lee pieces, but also other music. Has the soundtrack to the short Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop ever been issued? I think Joe Chambers was involved in that one, as well as She's Gotta Have It. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks, Bertrand.

This is great news! If I understand correctly, the set is broken down as follows: 1) CD 1: A full concert from 4/4/64. Two long tracks were on a Fantasy CD (which I have), but there are about 30 minutes of unissued music. 2) CD 2/3: The Amsterdam concert which is wonderful (best version of 'Meditations' in my opinion). I think there was a bootleg CD, which I don't have. 3) CD 4: The Monterey concert. There was a briefly available CD version; I only have the vinyl. 4) CD 5/6: The Favorite Quintet LP plus more. I have never heard a note of this music. I'm particularly excited about this portion of the set. Too bad they don't opt for a complete set. I thought 6 CDs was the most they were going to do. What is not included? To think some people asked for downloads... Glad Brian Priestley is doing the notes. I wish he could update his book and we could all forget that ghastly Santoro book. One of the worst jazz books ever. Bertrand.
