sickening penn state football allegations

There's even a term for them in prison slang - 'short eyes'. May he rot in hell. Bertrand. -
Please PM your address as well. Bertrand.

I've seen recent vinyl reissues of some of these titles. Will these be CDs? Agree that Infinity is great. Bertrand.

Joe gave an amazing performance tonight at the Atlas with a D.C. version of the Moving Pictures Orchestra. Bertrand.

On its way from Amazon. And of course I bought some other shit while I was at it. It's a compulsion. Bertrand.

Brownie, Thank you so much for looking into this sad situation. I add my best wishes for a speedy recovery. Bertrand.

Thanks to everyone for their wishes! I went to so many gigs in the last few days (DC jazz festival etc.) that I had to take the day off from work just to recuperate! I am not looking forward to getting so old that I have to leave after the first set. Bertrand.

Duh, I was rushing out and did not see your discography Sounds like I need this one for my Grant Green collection. Funny I never noticed it before... Bertrand.
-
Thanks to everyone! I wil probably have 'Soul People' pretty soon. Now another question: is Grant Green on all of the tracks on the 'Brothers 4' CD, or just on 'Tune Up'? Thanks, Bertrand.

So this is in fact the 2-CD Complete Antibes set slated for release several years ago, plus another CD and a DVD. I wonder why neither set from Stockholm will be complete. Losin mentions problems with an electric piano. Bertrand.

Could you post the track listing? Thanks. Bertrand.

Special guest appearance by George Clinton! Bertrand.

The special guests are even more hilarious than the cover. What is this record? Bertrand. -
Anybody see Mick Jagger w/Foo Fighters on SNL last night?

The 'new tune' with Jeff Beck was really bad. Mick can't write decent lyrics about the presidential erection? Bertrand. -
Up - any thoughts on this? Bertrand.

I think he was definitely quoting something, either 'Nowhere' or 'Horizon'. Funny how he sort of stumbled on the Star Trek theme by doing so. Maybe he should get composer credit Bertrand.

Done - thanks.

Listening to this track today from the Africaine album. From 1:28-1:37, Wayne Shorter makes a very distinctive quote. Every time I listened to this in the past, I thought he was quoting his composition 'The Albatross' which he recorded a year later on Second Genesis. There are other examples of Wayne quoting his own (later) compositions, so this was not surprising. But today it dawned on me - what he is quoting sounds like the 'Theme From Star Trek', which of course did not come out until 6-7 years later (altough the Blakey LP was not issued until the rainbow series). The wikipedia entry on the Star Trek them has a quote by the composer Alexander Courage which sheds some light on this situation: Courage has said his inspiration for the main part of the theme was the Richard Whiting song "Beyond the Blue Horizon," giving him the idea for a song which was a "long thing that...keeps going out into space...over a fast moving accompaniment."[3] The opening resembles two elements of symphonies by Gustav Mahler; the very beginning echoes the first notes of Mahler's First Symphony, while the first three notes of the leitmotif fanfare, as well as some of the harmonic structure and orchestration that Courage used, are similar to phrases in the first movement of his Seventh Symphony. The melodic and rhythmic outline of the opening horn solo is clearly derived from motto themes found in the openings of the symphonies of Anton Bruckner (most especially that of the horn section solo in the opening of the Ninth) while the duplet-triplet pattern of the melody is found in Bruckner's Third, Fourth, Sixth and Eighth Symphonies. The harmonic progression is from the song "Out Of Nowhere," a jazz song written by Edward Heyman and Johnny Green. So which of these pieces was Wayne referencing in 1959? Do we know of an example of his quoting this theme after the show became a cult favorite (and we know Wayne is a fan). I know many examples of Star Wars quotes, but I can't recall any Star Trek quotes (at least not at this hour). Also, does 'The Albatross' have a connection to any of the pieces listed above? Thanks, Bertrand. P.S. Of course, in the topic title, I meant 'Star Trek', not 'Star Wars'. How can I fix this, or does a moderator have to do it?

New (Unreleased) Studio + Live Wes Montgomery in March!
bertrand replied to Eric's topic in New Releases
I thought I remembered something along those lines. Do you know if it was from Monterey or elsewhere? Was it confirmed to definitely be Coltrane and Wes? The speaker who mentioned it yesterday was either not aware of this or did not want to mention it. Bertrand. -
Today marks the 100th birthday of this amazing musician, whose vision was truly unique. His contribution to jazz cannot be overstated. My friend Brad Linde will be celebrating his music this Wednesday 5/16 at the Atlas theatre in D.C. The program will include music from the Pacific Jazz date with Cannonball, which I don't think is performed much. I don't know of too many upcoming events celebrating Gil. I know Ryan Truesdell's record comes out this week. Does anyone know of anything else? Bertrand.

I beg to differ. 'Eva', already on previous issues, is a beautiful Shorter piece not released elsewhere (there's a rejected version from the Free For All sessions that we will probably never hear) which was intended for the eponymous Joseph Losey film but not used. This version of 'Conception' is very interesting and it's rare to hear the Messengers play a Shearing tune. Wayne is a bit off-mike in the opening head which is probably why it was not issued before. Of course, there is a probably a lot more material from this date. I assume they recorded the whole night (6/16/63). I wonder what other tunes were in the repertoire? I'm sorry I could not make this gig, but I was only 7 days old Bertrand.

New (Unreleased) Studio + Live Wes Montgomery in March!
bertrand replied to Eric's topic in New Releases
Fascinating presentation. Resonance records is a labor of love, run by people who clearly know and love the music. My hats off to them. The topic of the Wes Montgomery date with the Coltrane quartet + Dolphy came up. We know they played at Monterey in 1961, but even though other concerts from this festival are in the archive at Stanford, a tape for Montgomery/Coltrane did not turn up. Refresh my memory - has a tape in fact ever surfaced? Bertrand. -
New (Unreleased) Studio + Live Wes Montgomery in March!
bertrand replied to Eric's topic in New Releases
If you are in the D.C. area today... Resonance Records announces a Wes Montgomery celebration on Saturday, May 12 at Joe's Record Paradise in Silver Spring, MD. Beginning at 2pm and open to the general public, the event will feature a 60-minute panel discussion on Montgomery and Echoes of Indiana Avenue, the newly unearthed, critically acclaimed album, as well as live performances. Panelists include Larry Appelbaum (Library of Congress, JazzTimes, WPFW), Zev Feldman (Echoes of Indiana Avenue producer and Executive Vice President & General Manager of Resonance Records), Willard Jenkins (WPFW, Open Sky, Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, author), guitar legend Pat Martino, and Robert Montgomery (Wes' son). Tom Cole (NPR, WPFW) will serve as panel moderator. Additionally, greater Washington D.C. area guitarist Jerry Gordon and his trio will perform two sets at the event. "It gives me great pleasure to return to my hometown and share this music and story with the community," states Feldman. "We're also really grateful to Joe and Johnson Lee [founder & owners of Joe's Record Paradise] for allowing us to host this event at the store. Since its founding in 1974, the store has provided a foundation of music learning for countless music fans in the area, including myself. The barbershop-like shopping environment truly makes it an D.C. area institution." ** With a lot of sleuthing and a team of experts on the case, long lost tapes of Wes Montgomery have been discovered and restored. Resonance Records released Echoes of Indiana Avenue - the first full album of previously unheard Montgomery music in over 25 years - on March 6, which would have been Montgomery's 89th birthday. Over a year and a half in the making, the release provides a rare, revealing glimpse of a bona fide guitar legend. The tapes are the earliest known recordings of Montgomery as a leader, pre-dating his auspicious 1959 debut on Riverside Records. The album showcases Montgomery in performance from 1957-1958 at nightclubs in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as rare studio recordings. The release is also beautifully packaged, containing previously unseen photographs and insightful essays by noted music writers and musicians alike, including guitarist Pat Martino and Montgomery's brothers Buddy and Monk. ** Wes Montgomery Celebration - Panel & Performances @ Joe's Record Paradise Sunday, May 12 ยท 2pm 8216 Georgia Ave. Silver Spring, MD 20910 *Free general admission. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.* -
I was OK with buying the 'Conception' bonus tracks as an MP3 rather than buy a whole new copy, but not everyone wants to go that route. Bertrand.

There is an extra track, 'Conception', on this new issue of Ugetsu. Bertrand.
