Vinyl fu@#-ups support group session is now open.
Big Al replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
One that happened recently that I witnessed was when Davy Jones of the Monkees was in town for a show and had a meet-n-greet at a local record store. I was standing in line by this lady who had a mono copy of the first Monkees album. The record somehow managed to fall out of the sleeve and landed on its side on the cement floor. She now has two pieces of the Monkees album. But the worst one happened to me, and I think this may have all of you beat. A friend loaned me a box of 78s, one of which was Duke's "Perdido." I was loading the records back into the box for return to my friend, and the Duke record slipped out of my hands, landing on the other records. None of the other records were affected, but the Duke record broke into three pieces. Needless to say, I was scared for my life at that point. My friend forgave me, thankfully; but I was never allowed near her records again! -
And that's a bad thing?

Mavs are 0-2. From the looks of things, they're still playing timid ball, which is precisely what caused 'em to collapse in last season's Finals.

Wow! Imagine how THAT record might've sounded. Seriously!

The Cows got rooked in so many ways by the refs today. However, they also didn't take advantage of all the golden oppotunties handed then today, either. And then, of course, there's the dropped TD pass by the $10-million golden boy. The Cows deserved to lose today. Sports-talk shows are gonna be fuuuuuuuuuun tomorrow!

Well, I know what we're spinning at the next chat! Does Conn need a copy?

Uh, no, doofus: you're thinking of the Four Freshman. Sheesh!

but Charlie Parker liked him... There is that; I do like Miller's playing on that Parker w/Strings album. Thankfully, no.

Since I got a turntable and INport, my dad and my mother-in-law asked me to transfer a bunch of LPs to CD for them. Dad's stack was fun: a buncha Moody Blues, couple Chet Atkins LPs, a few other obscure guitar players and some classical music. Mom's stack, OTOH, well.... first, you gotta understand I love my in-laws. They're the coolest in the world, and I'm very blessed to be their son-in-law. But Mom's stack of records..... Actually, it isn't too too bad. However, as a result of some of these records, I now fully understand why the 50's were so unhip (not that I ever truly subscribed to the whole "Happy Days/American Graffiti" wistfulness). Kingston Trio? These guys had a Mosaic under their name????? But the worst, and I mean the WORST, the one that makes me feel sorry for anyone who actually lived through this when it was popular, was "Sing Along with Mitch." Oh..... my...... LORD!!!! I started this record and the music started and I had to check to see if the turntable-belt had come loose. Not wanting to listen to any more of this than necessary, I left the room and came back to flip the record over. Towards the end of side two, I came back in to check on the recording, and my computer was literally "sputtering:" it sounded as if it was trying to lose the connection to the record player! So I quickly tried to shut down INport, and got the error message "The program has unexpectedly shut down." Translation: if you don't shut off this record NOW, I will shut down PERMANENTLY. My gramma had a bunch of Sing Along with Mitch Miller (including one called, "Party Sing Along with Mitch." WTF???????), and so I'm curious: just what kinda scourge was this on popular music? Anyone have any permanent scars as a result of having to listen to these records? Anyone ever use these records as punishment on their kids? I might!

I agree. Fuego is great, but Byrd in Hand is majestic. Love 'em both, nonetheless!

No different than most pop groups these days, I would imagine.

Is that what y'all call Tim Horton's now?

Quite a review, too. Sounds like he had a lot of pent-up anger towards K-Fed for just...... being. Which I guess is crime enough, cometothinkofit.

Your most common source for music purchases?

Half Price Books. -
The session with Blakey is worth the price of admission alone!

I found a copy today at the Borders in Lewisville, of all places. Driving back to Arlington was made that much nicer, as the groove was so nice & relaxing. I especially dig "Funky Mama." Lex Humphries is wonderful, as is Duke Pearson. Whatta great session; glad I finally got it!

I was gonna change mine to I Wanna Be Sedated, but I figured my posting already gave everyone that impression...... -

I mean, I'm ashamed to admit I got rid of it. Probably will try it again sometime.

I used to own that....

Natalie Cole leaves jazz behind
Big Al replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Well, I heard her cover of "Pink Cadillac" before I heard Springsteen's original version. Always thought that was either Patti Labelle or the Pointer Sisters. Learn something new every day, I guess. -

Does anyone even know of her outside of her "duet" with her late father? -
