Maybe you need to buy a lot more music by a lot more musicians. And check out a lot more live music. Cats don't obtain stardom just on the basis of talent, there are a lot of "other factors" at work. So basically you are upset that people become stars? Or are you just upset that your personal preferences become stars? You claim that Miles doesnt move you like Lee or Woody, so you dont understand why he is more popular. But that is just you. A great many serious jazz fans will still tell you Miles is the best. We arent talking neophytes without Woody Shaw records here. Same goes with BB King. I can name you 100 great blues guitar players that the average person has never heard or heard of. But I can name a single one better than BB King. Just because he isnt your personal preference, doesnt make him overrated. Is it annoying that people love Miles but dont know Lee? Of course it is, but that doesnt make Miles any less good, or less deserving of popularity. Look at Reggae, EVERYONE knows Bob Marley. But barely anyone knows anyone else in reggae. Does that make Bob overrated? Absolutely not, because he is the greatest. His fame came from talent, same as BB, same as Ray Charles, Same as Herbie. You simply cannot deny their abilities. Now, if you want to complain about how everyone has heard of Wynton or John Mayer, then we have agreement. But if you cant see why Miles is more popular than Lee Morgan, then you simply arent paying attention.

Am I the only who feels like this should be an extended April Fool's joke? Chet Baker plays for lovers? No offense, GA, but you sound like an A&R or spam guy. I cant really imaging anyone on a board like this buying these sorts of cds.

Overall there is no doubt that music downloading has hurt sales. There is clearly an epidemic of music piracy that is deeply indebted in the culture of youths today, and that culture is VERY bad for music. However, the line is a bit wavy, and the area is a bit grayer than many in the business are willing to accept. Record companies still have not seriously dealt with music downloading and the fact that clearly the consumer prefers electronic means of acquiring music. Even itunes was a LONG time coming in the Napster age, and it still isnt adequate. Their flat rates for everything, and a very high 10 dollar price point just isnt in touch with how music is consumed these days. If music companies truly wanted to end downloading, they would respond to there customers needs better, and not just sue them.

Please enlighten us as to the "real" innovators then. I think jazz, because it has gone thorugh much, is similar to rock music is now. Innocation is no longer big steps, but small waves and personal statements. Douglas has undoubtedly carved out a niche for himself, and I personally dont think there is any reason to doubt his contributions to the music.

Here is why I give him so much credit: I like his music. I don't think his 'innovations' is the reason he gets so much praise. He assembles good bands, writes good tunes, and plays excellent trumpet.

And in a way, that is my point. You can not simply draw a line that says "All downloading is wrong." As a guitar and history teacher, I see how disgustingly widespread downloading and copying is. Especially since now there is no physical difference between copied and real cds because it all ends up on the ipod anyways. It is rampant, and it is VERY dangerous. But to take a party line that says all downloading is illegal and immoral will cause kids to completely ignore what you are saying. And this is what the music industry has done. AS a result, what they say is a complete joke, to be mocked and ridiculed by the average kid. I tell my students that yes i do download, but if I like the music I buy it, not only to support the artists but also the record companies that do take on quite a bit of risk to release that music. I also talk about sound quality and the like. I KNOW they respond better to that than just chastising them like im their Grandpa.

Technology trumps your narrow concept of right and wrong when it helps the very people you are claiming it hurts. You make no allowances whatsoever for how downloading music today has become very similar to a user friendly radio. I for one can point to literally hundreds of cds and dozens of concerts I have attended as a direct result of exposure to downloaded music. I know of many MANY people who have had the exact same response. In a way, the democratization of music (im sure you will love that phrase) has led to increased fan base AND intensified fan base. I wouldnt be 1/100 of the jazz fan I am without access to the music. I just dont see how you draw the line as "Wrong" because it hurts artists when actually in MANY cases it helps them greatly. Maybe you are drawing it as wrong simply due to law, for which is even more absurd. Never once in my life did I consider legality and morality to be related.

And it continues ad nauseum. My biggest problem continues to be that people who are against copying refuse to admit that there are significant benefits to it. That is why we draw the line in a different spot, and that is why it is a gray area. you simply cant say "downloading is wrong" or "copying cds is wrong." Its incredibly out of touch with the realities of technology today, and out of touch with how music is consumed today. I download an incredible amount of music. I also buy an incredible amount of music because of that. Until you can admit the vast benefits of downloading and burning, we cant have an honest discussion about the negative implications either.

Another dangerously worded report, that claims a 'natural' brain difference. Clearly many sociological and cultural factors play into how people react to different things. Its asinine to say "Women are more empathetic and men more willing participants and revenge."

I lend cds out a fair amount, but usually only to trusted guitar students. Sure, I have lost my fair share by doing this, but it is worth the price of creating many more 15 year old Miles, Voltrane, Jaco, Jeff Beck, BB King, SRV etc.. fans. Especially when we are talking about poor 14 year olds, as they all are. Turning someone on to jazz or blues or even better rock is welll worth the small price of occasionally losing a disc.

I do not see any difference between borrowing a friends cd and copying it and making it available on the internet. Its still ilegal copying of copyrighted material. That being said, I am very guilty of both practices.

Brian Unger was always a fave, he now does some stuff on NPR's Day-to Day. He has a podcast of it on itunes, definitely worth checking out. I wonder what happened to people like A. Whitney Brown, Beth Lettleford, Lizz Winstead and the like. They were all great in the Kilborn era, and really set the tone for the whole show. So many of the correspondants since just rip off their comedic pace and questioning style.

Haven't they had all of those albums from the beginning?

I have had the chance to see Cecil, so I am greatly hoping I can make this. Not sure who the plus 2 is, but it doesnt really matter to me, although obviously Oxley and Willaim Parker would be amazing. If anyone else in the Philly area wants to share a ride that would be great, because I have never been to the City before and I doubt I can convince my girlfriend to go. And if I did convince her Im sure she'd kill me about 10 seconds into the concert.

Joe Henderson's Miles tribute is no longer available. Not a huge bummer, but anytime they 'run out' of any cd its a bit scary. Im just waiting for a 6.99 price bump any day now.
