  1. Memory lane time (not the name of a band). This scene hit London as a package it seemed at the time (and oddly connected in my memory to REM but that's probably memory tricks). Contrary to felser I fell big time for Green On Red and The Long Ryders and saw them many times live so they must've been over here a lot. I'm not too sure how their music would stand up to my tastes nowadays. I owned the first Dream Syndicate album and the early Rain Parades but sold them on since Another Mazzy Star fan here and would recommend all their albums and what Hope Sandoval has gone on to do since. In fact, they/she's one of the few rock bands that still get a good listen amongst all the Jazz/improv
  2. Nice selection I must go to Berlin How's the Shofar? I've not heard either of their releases Good to know that record stores still exist somewhere. Yes, I think there where at least 10 recordstores within a 15 minute walking distance from our appartment. And if I had more time/money I could have bought a lot more mjazzg-> I think the Shofar is fantastic! A very nice mixture of Klezmer/folk songs and freejazz, which (to me at least) feels very authentic, organic and tasteful. I think sometimes these mixtures of styles can feel a bit gimmicky and/or plastic, but this is not the case here. I think Trzaska handles the old Jewish music/tradition with respect, but at the same time transfers it to the "here and now" with his own (and those of the other players of course) artistic vision. Thank you. I'll add to the list
  3. Nice selection I must go to Berlin How's the Shofar? I've not heard either of their releases
  4. Mama Lapato - s/t [Bead Records]
  5. http://www.cadoganhall.com/event/kenny-wheeler-151119/ I'm already down for the Maria Schneider on 17th so couldn't resist this. Have thrown in the rather bizarre Eddie Gomez and the London Sinfonietta on 18th - everything from Frank Zappa to newly written pieces by contemporary composers. A nice little break when the winter is starting to cut in. That Kenny evening looks very nice. Unfortunately the curse of the festival programme means I've a ticket for David Virelles that night. I did get one of the last tickets for Schneider - never heard an album but read many good things about her and the band. Good luck finding the December gig! (have you officially cast off the chains now?)
  6. I'm interested in your thoughts on the Joshua Abrams record. The record looks very appealing to me, but I'm kinda reluctant because of the high price of the record. Not cheap. I purchased from US and will hope it doesn't get stopped for customs charges - always a lottery
  7. if so, what's the source of the second CD of unreleased material?
  8. Carter and Bradford/Gjerstad are now available on the website. My order's in with one of the Kuchens
  9. the latest Joshua Abrams on Eremite along with some Feldman,Cage and Browne from the Squidco Hat sale
  10. The splash so big we're getting reviews of NY gigs in the Guardian...... http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/aug/26/kamasi-washington-blue-note-new-york-review sounds like a fun evening
  11. Nearly bought the LP a couple of times.Glad I won't have to pay the scarcity premium now. Nice one some nice Kuchen in the pipeline too
  12. Glad to hear they got back to you eventually. I remember the concerts but didn't attend. May be one to investigate. I hope it doesn't indicate a retreat from releasing material. They must have a treasure trove. I'm holding out for something from Evan Parker's birthday celebrations last year
  13. Yep, that Gilgore sounded good from over here too. Thanks for posting
  14. Absolutely! Kamasi's sold out one of London's bigger concert halls in November. It's a double header with Go Go Penguin, a acoustic piano trio (just signed to Blue Note) who are making big waves here and drawing crowds from a young demographic crossing into dance music. They're a great live experience but one that would probably upset 'the purists' out there as being too popular and populist. That' s entertainment!
  15. Tony Oxley - Ichnos [RCA Victor] finally found a copy at a price I was prepared to stump up.
  16. Joseph Cornell - Wanderlust. Royal Academy of Arts a very thought provoking introduction to this artist's work. Certainly left me wanting to know more about the man behind the art. With my post above it seems that this summer is one of discovery of American artists whom I feel I should have already known more than I did Last weekend. A trip to Tate Liverpool to see Jackson Pollock - Blind Spots http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-liverpool/exhibition/jackson-pollock-blind-spots Well I knew plenty about this artist but the focus on the later works provided a good show (and Liverpool's always worth a visit)
  17. I thoroughly enjoyed the broadcast too especially with the discussion going on in that other thread . Thanks for posting
  18. Ha ha, funny seeing bogan come up here. It's a very specific term, as in, you could be all the things in the above definition but still not be a bogan, and you could be a bogan and be none of those things. It used to be that you had to be from West Auckland as well but i think the phenomena has spread out. Here's the best example i could find (NSFW language): I came across it in a btl comment describing Shane Warne and his recently unveiled 'tasteful' mural
  19. bogan "the term bogan (/ˈboʊɡən/) is an Australian and New Zealand slang word that can be used to describe a person with a lower working-class background, or whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour exemplify a gratified working class mentality and depending on the context, can be pejorative or self-deprecating."
  20. Charles Tyler Quintet - At WKCA [No label] purchased online with no research. On arrival it's undoubtedly a boot (from a radio broadcast) which is a shame. The music however is very good indeed
  21. The Hill's a treasure trove for anyone who hasn't got the titles already. The Mitchell and the Blake could both fill big holes in my collection. Interesting
  22. Does anyone know whether CDJapan take payment on date of pre-order or on posting date? Trying to avoid breaking the bank.....
  23. Poesy for me too. Means I can finally stop flirting with the expensive LPs available
  24. I recommend her recent work with Roscoe Mitchell. :-) I certainly shall when I can track down a half-affordable copy this side of the Atlantic :-) edit to add: ordered it from Dusty G and will take US postage costs and customs on the chin. It better be good
