  1. I don't think you are supposed to say "kickin" here. Welcome my WGVU brother!! g
  2. WRONG! .... Scully and I are like brothers and have a few occasional misunderstandings.. We've been friends now 16 years.. He actually invited me to kayak with him and his family next week.. Uh dude... you forgot my smilie " "
  3. I recognize that lady with the paper. BTW It's nice to see Geoge W. to her left on guitar making himself useful. Always new that boy would amount to sumphin' Just added a bunch more pics from that tour. Might be one of Pentwater, got a bunch from Scully's and from Idlewild. George W?? Oh you should just start practicing falling down NOW (cuz when we meet)
  4. buy that new or second hand? does that use the hammond oil? i see the heaviest thing is the bass pedals @ almost 60 lbs I have to say, that running through a real leslie, this thing sounds amazing! It is freaky though when Jim uses his module and synth horns jump out of that thing.
  5. Yeah, I saw yiz guys names when I was there. We didn't do anything far out, just tried to sneak some of my tunes in and other things I liked. They didn't hate us but it was obvious that Ellington and standards would go over better, and we love those so shifted and had a ball. Like I said, at Gull's Landing we played for ourselves and still took requests. I'm too stupid, old, tired, and Jewish to know how to post analog pics on the web. Otherwise I'd be delighted. The one of me on Scully's bike should be in the Hall of Fame (well Shame, anyway). It's going on my CD so I can announce to the public what all my friends know: I'm outta my frickin' gourd. Root Doctor June 2006 Tour aka Scully Tour once there scroll down, you might recognize some of the sites. Jim is gonna hate me for posting this... lol
  6. He was cool to me. He didn't owe me or my guys anything, but went on Lazaro's say-so. I didn't say he was perfect and hardly know him. There were some minor misunderstandings re transportation and such, but in the end he put us up in his house for a night with full refrigerator privileges. Shit, I even double-dipped the ham. Anyway, just to say it was nice to sample that part of the country for a bit and hang with Lazaro, etc. I'd love to come back and for more than a week. I know what I saw of Scully. He broke his ass transporting and setting up equipment every night after his day gig with only his girlfriend getting his back. But maybe you know something I don't.... I was just having fun. Scully is cool. He gets things done. He just called me today, right after I made that post...I was worried he was lurking here. If you are Scully, I love you! Randy, doesn't but I do. It is a fun tour for sure. I think we sold around 100 cds total that week and saw some pretty cool sites. If you get to go again, make sure you get the Gyro at the Baldwin Fish Mart. Awesome eats. g I have three hilarious pictures from that week, all posed, two involving Tim: 1. Me on Scully's Harley, and that is one MFing pip of a pic. 2. me playing and oblivious to the drummer, Rudy Petchauer, getting ready to hack me with an axe from the deck of a 100-tear-old boat called the SS City of Milwaukee. 3. Scully strangling me. I sold about two demo CDs at $9 per. I'm not sure whether to say 'fuck you' or can i borrow a fin .... "I sold about two demo CDs at $9 per. I'm not sure whether to say 'fuck you' or can i borrow a fin ...." We play R&B, Soul, and Blues. Wider demographic appeal, hence the quasi-commerical success (relatively speaking). Probably not a good time to mention that we sell 'em for 15.00 <runs and hides> At any rate, if you can post those pics here (or have some on a website somewhere), I would love to see them. Especially if you have one of you strangling Scully. We will be posting pictures of our Scully Tour next week on our Root Doctor site.
  7. Pentwater is beautiful. I envy you Chuck for living in such a beautiful part of the state. Last year was my first exposure to Manistee, Pentwater, etc.. Being from working class stock we were stuck with the more affordable east side of the state for vacations (Tawas, etc..) as I was growin up. Good to hear the fellas played well!

  9. Joe and I just watched the DVD last night. We were rolling on the floor. I'll begin by posting a quote from the Muskegon Chronicle that Uncle Skid sent me: On the DVD they pan to the audience a few times and the poor kids are just bored out of their minds, waiting for Train. Eventually we won them over and actually had some asking for one more after our set. But they really didn't know what to think of us. It's not their fault... the state of music education in this country is so pitiful it's amazing that people even come to concerts at all anymore. Back in the day you'd have Miles with the Dead with Santana with Richie Havens with Led Zepplin with Weather Report, etc. Now it's "a jazz/funk group opening for a rock band?!? WTF?!?!" And yet with the Root Doctor show they tore our clothes off. And I am just talking about Macy Gray's backup singers!
  10. For the uninitiated, Tim Scully is sort of a combined jazz Father Flanagan-Gandhi. He gets local sponsorship and gets local bands and in my case a NY quartet (with one Dutchman) and gives each band a week of concerts in bandshells up the peninsula. He is a hero and thank the lord for him. Well, that is one way of looking at him. But seriously, it is cool that Tim drums this up. I've now done two years with Root Doctor, and while it has had its occassional bumps, I have a good time. This year I took my family along. I wish I had half Tim's energy. He is a dynamo who knows what he wants. (Jim is off in the corner biting his tongue...good boy Jim...good boy)
  11. Yeah, that gal who called me was quite nice sounding on the phone, and she was easy to negotiate with. Sounds like the museum hosts some pretty cool events! Thanks for the hookup Ron!!!
  12. Hey, Paul. Yes, it went beautifully, with a cast of troupers. I'm about a little more than half finished but some nice things are in the can. We didn't miss a beat and took care of business. More later, when I finish. Thanks everyone. Very exciting!!!
  13. Not really, I am hoping you will really like it, and buy it! kiddin I'll leave it at Jim's. g
  14. It's true. My Martin sounds much better than when I first got it And it sounded great then! I slapped new strings on this guitar last night and it sounds even better now! I've got some new strings for my Wechter nylon string acoustic that I've been meaning to put on. I'm sure it will be a big improvement - the ones on there now are at least 2 years old. I'd like to get a bass guitar, too, for making demos on my computer. I was thinking I'd get a cheap electric, but maybe I should look at some acoustics, too. Joe, I've got a bass you are are more than welcome to borrow. g
  15. I just recommended this one to our drummer. He is buying it. Thanks Chuck! Actually, I might pick one up too... got some funky ole board tapes here. g
  16. lol Yeah, we've got one here for the kids for Halloween but I should sneak it out to a gig one of these nights...
  17. I sure hope Randy picks this video up.
  18. Darn good question! g
  19. Derek already scares me. And I don't scare easily. I keep trying to pick up the slide, and then I hear Sonny Landreth and Derek and well I throw the damn thing back down. Btw, ABB doesn't seem to have a Michigan date scheduled. That kind of blows... I dug the show outside of Detroit last year.

    Suzanne Vega

I concur. I am no Jazz historian by any stretch, but hasn't jazz music alway had it's finger on the pulse of popular culture and concerns? And in turn, influenced pop music to some extent? Wasn't Barry Gordy a huge jazz fan? Wouldn't drawing in the singer songwriter cohort/fanbase likely lead to some converted jazz listeners? They aren't mutually exclusive categories afterall. So, I don't find Vega's presence on Blue Note to be that alarming. It's not like they had a slot open, and she took it over some jazz musician. It is a business and they need to make money. She's artsy, quirky, and bends some ears. hmmm I am looking for a Hip Hop* group right now for Big O Records, so Root Doctor and organissimo can continue to lose money gracefully. <running and hiding now> *not really
  21. Derek surpassed EC in depth and maturity of playing years ago, imo. Eric is a nice player and all, but Derek is just plain ridiculous. Hopefully, playing with Derek might do Eric some good! I am certain that Clapton will be inspired by Derek. I am inspired by Derek. My point is that Clapton does have something that Derek should and will most likely tap into: Experience and Wisdom. This isn't an indictment of the young man. He is a wonderful player. But honestly, I've seen both live, and Clapton has more maturity and more command of his craft than Derek. Clapton has a huge catalog as an artist. He is capable of performances that frankly I haven't seen out of Derek. Derek occassionally sounds and looks like he is still practicing. AND that is cool. The emphasis is different. Derek is in a "jam band" mode, and Clapton is a craftsman of song and performance (with some formidable guitar chops that some folks still don't seem to get). Regardless, I believe this may very well turn out to be a wonderful exprience for both of them. Being the chameleon that he is Clapton will pick up some tricks from Derek, and Derek will become a stronger performer. Now if they were lucky, George Benson would be there...
  22. Hey I just realized something...you didn't come out Friday Paul. Oh well, at least I got to see YOU play! And by the way, ya'll, Paul can play some drums!!
  23. Chris Stainton ain't no slouch. P.S. Go to see Eric, be utterly amazed by Derek (Sorry, had to get that in ) Chris Stainton is great! Clapton has some depth and maturity of playing that will do Derek good. imho g
  24. So that's where The Wiggles got their stage moves!
